Re: 1959 Lake N' Sea Restoration

I will more than likely use the same system with the exception that I will roll & tip.

I am going to try roll and tip in addition to spraying. While it is nice to have access to spray equipment, I want to try both methods. The manufacturer claims that it is an EXCELLENT paint for this type of application, as is the SM-1000. I actually applied the SM-1000 on part of the Glasspar (motorwell, LONG story :)) with a foam brush- and had pretty impressive results. The paint self levels quite nicely. The few small brush strokes that were left in it were easily taken care of when I cut & buffed it- and you really can't tell the difference between the area that was brushed and the area that was sprayed!

The only 'problem' I ever had with the SM-1000 was due to an application error. It requires oxygen to cure- So you really have to pay attention to your wet film thickness when you apply it, as well as curing times. If it goes on too thick, it won't cure... And if you try to recoat it too soon, it will bubble. But, once I got that all worked out (it took an e-mail to customer service/tech support), everything was great.

I'm thinking that the urethane will probably be a bit more forgiving when it comes to thickness, since you mix the activator in with the paint and it doesn't require oxygen exposure to cure... But I'm still going to follow the direction.

The inlaws are coming up for the weekend- So I've got to get the house cleaned up- Progress will probably be a little slow for the next few days. That's OK, though- I'm waiting for the new spray equipment from TCP... I JUST got an order from them today, too- Some POR-15 for the truck restoration... I wish I'd have ordered the sprayer then, too ;)

Beautiful Andrew! Really impressed with the work! So jealous of those on here that can turn nothing into an amazing piece of functional art! I have definitely learned a lot over the years of my modern restore for tinny but still far from the craftsmanship that you and many others on iboats have achieved! Congrats!

Andrew -

Progress looks great. Showed your thread to my Mom this weekend - she was the original owner of our Lake-n-Sea years ago. She'll probably start trollin' the board to watch the project.

Great work.

If you have used POR-15 before, I sure would like to hear your opinion of it. Thanks, Bill

I've had limited experience with it- The Ford I'm restoring is the first land vehicle I've attempted to restore. People I know SWEAR by it, I've got some really minor pinholes in my floor, and I'm told this is the way to go, it'll seal them off as well as protect it in the future. I'll keep you posted!

Thanks- It feels good to be this far. You'll have to bring her over for a ride this summer.

Do you remember what color the inside of the boat was?? I know that the inside of the hull was Zolatone- But do you happen to recall what color the floor was? I haven't decided exactly what I'm doing with it.

Well, the new spray equipment is here already! I ordered it on the 6th, at 9pm, and it is in my hands on the 8th before noon! Not bad- Especially considering I didn't get rush shipping or anything!

Of course it's going to rain tomorrow... But I might try to sneak out there this afternoon and shoot some primer on the seats just to see how it works. The inlaws are going to be here this weekend, so I won't get to play with it then... It's this afternoon or never (well, 'till next week, that is :) )

Well, I couldn't resist.... I got it out and shot some primer on the dash panel and seats.

It worked a LOT better than the other sprayer I was using! I should have thinned it a BIT more, but it still did a great job.

I am absolutely amazed at how little overspray there was, too- Much less than my old HVLP turbine.

Clean up was fast, too- A lot faster than what I'm used to. I cheated, though- I used a disposable paint cup instead of cleaning up the metal one that the gun came with ;)

On our boat - the exterior of the hull was white, interior of the hull (including the floor) was the Zolatone. As I recall, the inside of the hull and the floor were the exact same. The cap on ours and the seats were all the same color (Bahama Tan) and the seats had the coolest upholstery. Several different places the dash had silver (almost a glitter) accents.

Not much has gone on for the past couple weeks, I've been tinkering a bit with it but took a break to do some welding work on my '66 ford... I got the first coat of primer sanded down, and found a few more low spots here and there to fill. I need to get them filled, then shoot another coat of primer, then get some PAINT done!

Do you have a build thread on this 66 Ford of yours, whether iboats or another forum?

Re: 1959 Lake N' Sea Restoration

I got some work done today- I finished up some of the sanding on the hull side , and got another coat of primer on. I need to sand it again, then hit a few more areas with a bit mor primer, but of course I ran out, so I need to wait until I get some more.

I tried out the urethane paint today, too. I mixed a little up so I could "play" with it. I ended up painting the transom with a brush, I'm pretty impressed with how well it levels, and man does it have great gloss! I can't wait to try spraying it. That MAY happen next week if all goes well.

I had a photo, But didn't bother posting it- This was one of those work days that ended with the boat looking JUST like it did before, from a distance anyways... Primed white. Just a lot smoother than before!
