Re: 1959 Lake N' Sea Restoration

I did the dreaded flip today... No photos of the actual process, as I was KIND of busy. I did it alone, but with some pre-planning, it went smoothly.

0414Flipn.jpg

I did it on the grass, to minimize potential damage. I lifted the bow with the gantry and a chain fall, and while that was lifted and supported, I went to the transom and lifted it & flipped it over... Sounds simple, but it was a workout! I ended up with some really minor scuffs in the new paint job from the chain, but they'll probably buff out without a problem.

Then I dropped it back on it's cradle- This is the same cradle that I used when it was upside down, I designed it to work BOTH ways. It was also designed to be used to hold the bed for my '66 ford truck project, too :)

You can really see the gloss that I was able to get with this paint-

0414gloss.jpg

Once I got it flipped, I cleaned up the inside, and gave it a coat of primer-

I need to decide what color the interior of the hull is going to be. Originally, it was a very dark grey Zolatone, but I think I'm either going to do it white or lighter grey.

Long time viewer of thread. First time posting to it.

Looking better than NEW!

Really jealous that you are on the flip side already, while I am still waiting out the weather in Northern Minnesota.

Re: 1959 Lake N' Sea Restoration

Thanks...

I was actually thinking about putting a tiny bit of pink in the 'fleck' job, just to tie it all in together. I just have to finalize the pink color and get it ordered this week! I'm thinking of something like this for the pink-

Pink is a tough color get just right, though- And not something that I want to do WRONG...

The black rear quarters help make that Pink look like the right 1. IMHO

That Pink will certainly look great on the Lake N Sea. And just a touch mixed into the Zolatone type interior will definitely pull it together and look as it should have been originally in '59.

The pink on the Chevy would work beautifully along with having some in the Zolatoned Interior...

Just a suggestion...Have a supply of extra tints for the color on hand, just in case between the first and subsequent coats you decide on a little bit of a tweak to the color...unfortunately, color is very deceptive when you are trying to visualize a sample against a large finished area...sometimes just a dab or two of a certain tint used in the mixing of the color can make a world of difference in the finished look...

You could ask whoever mixes up your paint to give you a little of each tint used in making the color, and even before you put it on the boat, you could do a little experimenting...

Have Fun and looking forward to the finished paint job...it is gonna look incredible...I just know it!

Re: 1959 Lake N' Sea Restoration

I've been looking at pinks... I THINK I've picked one-

PINK.jpg

That photo doesn't show the real color too well, this is better-

Of course, colors look VERY different on the computer!

I found some photos of cars and boats that were the right shade of pink, printed them up, and compared them to about 2 dozen paint chips. This is a Glidden color- Of course, I wont be using glidden paint- but I can sent the paint chip to the company that makes the paint, and they can match it for me.

pink is a TOUGH color to get right- Hopefully this is what I'm looking for. Then- I've got to actually get the courage up to order the paint, and spray it on! :)

Thanks- It takes a REAL man to show up at the boat ramp with a pink boat :)

Actually, Pink is one of the original factory colors- Though I have yet to find an intact boat that's pink... My guess is they were all painted (or scrapped!) by self-conscious owners! This design screams late-50's, so I had to go with a color that did, too!!

The base coat is on the hull interior & floor-

0416hullin.jpg

I used a lighter grey than original- I felt like the dark grey that was on the boat before would be too dark, especially with the pink... I'm going to apply a fleck finish to the insides of the hull, and a non-skid on the floor.

This is a sample of the pink color-

0416painttest.jpg

I had the local paint shop mix up a small sample of the color that I am thinking about using, so I could try it out. Of course, this isn't the paint that I am going to use- It's latex, but its the same color. I can either sand it off, or just leave it, since this area is under the dash anyway.

It really helps to see a larger area painted rather than a 2" square sample. I THINK this is the right color, but I'm going to have to sleep on it to be sure :)

Did you use a paint code or just pick a chip that you thought was close to the original color?I think with a little buffing it will be close to the original pink.

I went to several paint stores and got all the chips I could- Then found photos of boats and cars that were the 'right' shade, then matched it as closely as possible. I'll send the chip to the people who make the paint, And they will scan it, and mix it up for me...

Hi Andrew. I just came across your thread today and had to read through the whole thing! I love those 50's style runabouts, they have so much character. I think you have done a tremendous job on this restoration and your craftsmanship and attention to detail are admirable. Those vintage motors and trailer are going to make for one sweet package. I can't wait to see you splash this bad boy!

I like it in the photo. Tone is good: Not too light, but it doesn't hit that fluorescent stage. I think tying some of that tone in with the fleck on the flooring would be good, but try to get as close to a 25% grey as you can. Roughly this color:
25_Grey.jpg

It'll brighten up a little with the sun hitting it, but still be dark enough to contrast against against the pink.

It's looking great Andrew.

Re: 1959 Lake N' Sea Restoration

I briefly had the hull and cap back together, for a test fit-

0417Together.jpg

The complex transom on this boat makes it critical that everything is RIGHT, and I wanted to make sure that the splashwell and fins fit correctly over the new transom before I invested too much time and material into the paint job. I knew I was probably going to have to grind a little off the transom on the inside so the splashwell would fit- The new transom ended up being a tiny bit thicker than the old one was. But, after a little grinding, it all fit-

0417Transom.jpg

It actually looked like a boat for a while this morning, rather than a pile of parts!!

Thanks for all the comments/compliments. It's been a long road, but the end is in sight!

That is really close to the mid-tone that I'm going to be using in the fleck job. When I did the inside of the hull on my Glasspar, I did it with a white base, and two greys... Since the topsides were going to be red, I mixed a touch of red in with the grey, to warm it up a bit. It was VERY subtle, but made a difference! I am an artist, so working with color is something that I'm fairly familiar with, and I know that a subtle difference in tone can make all the difference in the world.
