Re: 1959 Lake N' Sea Restoration

I am an artist...

A fellow artist!?! Building a Lake-N'-Sea! Less than 3 hours away!! Man, I gotta' make it down for the splash!

What kind of art? I dabble in all sorts of stuff, but exhibit design and graphics pays the bills.

I do a little of everything... The work that I am 'known' for is mostly graphite drawing, and mostly in Miniature. The vat majority of my drawings are 6 square inches or less. You can see my small stuff at http://www.lessthansix.com. I exhibit all over the world, and I am a member of a number of groups, including the Royal Miniature Society in the UK. These are just about full size-

I am also a blacksmith, and dabble in illustration, sculpture, printmaking, and other mediums... You can see that stuff at http://www.agott.com.

Wow andgott thats some pretty cool miniature art you got going! How long does it take you to complete a 6 inch painting?
BTW the cap looks like a good fit. Will you permanently attach it together? How you getting it water tight ?

It's a pretty good fit- Which was a relief :)

They will be permanently bonded. Originally, they attached them with thickened resin, and stapled the flange together. Then, an aluminum rub rail is bolted on over that. I'll likely use something like 3-m 4200 to seal and bond the joint, but I'll forgo the staples- Just use the through bolts in the rub rail to hold it.

Great stuff Andrew - the drawing of the Cockatoo Feathers was nicely done. My great uncle did (literally) thousands of small pencil drawings (right about 3x5). His pencil work was utterly amazing. My Grandfather was an incredible watercolor artist, though his pencil and oil work was good too. Dad is a fantastic Photographer.

I got a little bit of all of it. I've done photography, graphic design, 3D modeling and illustration for hire. Everything else is just for fun.

- I checked out the entire site and all the links. Great stuff.

Re: 1959 Lake N' Sea Restoration

A little fiberglass/epoxy work today.

I knew that the transom ended up being a little thicker than original- So to make it all fit again, I had to grind it down a little. I'd say I probably needed to remove about 3/8" or so to get the splashwell, which is molded in to the deck, in. I cut out what I needed to, feathered the edge, and reglassed it-

And, while I had the epoxy out, I repaired the areas of the flange that were broken off-

0420Repair.jpg

There was a similar repair on both sides.

I've also been working on final fairing and filling on the cap- I block sanded it, filled some lows & pinholes, and primed it again. I've got to do the final sanding on the primer, then it'll be ready for paint. Hopefully, I'll get to that towards the end of next week.

I put a coat of grey primer on today- I found that it was a LOT easier to find the spots that need attention with a dark primer!

0425Primed.jpg

With all the prior sanding and filling I've done, there aren't too many spots that need attention. I think I'm going to give it one more quick coat of primer, then a final sanding, then it's time for some paint.

The PINK has been ordered, too... Cross your fingers :)

The hull went on to the trailer today-

0430OnTrailer.jpg

It rolled right off it's work dolly with no problems... A combination of a VERY slick bottom and nice rollers on the trailer!

It's a pretty good fit-
0430OnTrailer2.jpg

I just need to fine-tune the rollers a bit, and we'll be ready to go!

0430Rollers.jpg

Check out the SHINE on the bottom :)

I got the final coat of primer sanded on the cap, and it's ready to paint. I should have my pink paint soon... Though I have to admit I'm a bit scared!

You better hurry up and splash the Flamingo, Wood- I'm nippin' at your heels... :)

They are neat old boats, Jeff- and worth putting some work in to. Is yours a Caribbean model? The '60s should be the same as mine, there might be some small differences here and there. What condition is she in?? I've got some (but not many!) spare parts if you are missing things, it took me a long time to find them!

she's all there except the seats. Those and the bimini top were brittle &crumbled to dust. She sat behind my friends barn uncovered for over 20 yaers. The transom has one hole under the drain holes. And pin holes everywhere! I could'nt find a name for the model it's ser # 0475 0597 made by Parsons mfg in Travers City MI,but the transom is just like yours. Its 13'9" and rated for 1075 lb &45hp it came w/ a 60 Gale Soveriegn 35.I was pretty intimidated taking on this project but found your thread and had some offers of help so i'm calming down some now.

Don't attempt to adjust your monitor- The colors are correct-

0522Pink.jpg

My Pink paint finally got here today! I was a little nervous about how the color would translate from a small paint chip to real paint, but it looks OK. I went ahead and mixed up a sample batch-

0522PinkMixed.jpg

It's sitting here, waiting to 'kick', before I thin it.

I only wanted to mix a small amount, so I could paint one of the parts before I sprayed the hull. I wanted to make sure that the color was right before I painted the whole thing. Also, Some people have asked how this paint works with a brush, and I had not tried that yet, so I decided to give it a shot now. It works quite well with a brush- I added thinner to it until it was thin enough to flow well, but not too 'drippy'. Then, I painted the dash-

0522Dash.jpg

The coverage was great, and the brush marks leveled out pretty well. I think I may have thinned a LITTLE too much, but it turned out pretty good. The color isn't right in the picture, I used my IPhone to take the picture, and the light wasn't the best. You can see the reflection, though- It's VERY glossy!

I think that the color is right- Which is a relief! Once this coat cures, I'll put another coat on. The manufacturer recommends 12-24 hours as the recoat window. It's not as picky as some of the other paints that I have used.

Yeah, it is certainly not a color for everyone- or for every boat... But, On this boat, I think it will look great! If nothing else, it will stand out :)
