Looks like the next 10 days are going to be ABSOLUTELY PERFECT FOR FIBERGLASS!!! It's going to be in the 70's and sunny, amazingly. My goal is to get this thing all fiberglassed, sanded, primed and painted in that time span. Think this is possible? I'm going to need all the Iboats help i can get, I am determined.

Will that be enough time span for the fiberglass to be cured enough to paint?

Do the fiberglass WORK in full shade. Once you're done w/ a layup, wheel it over into FULL SUN to help cure unwaxed resin....... GT was doing the in & out of the sun during his monster layups at work.

You can do multiple layers of glass per layup 'session' just let them tack off a bit between each. Get them layed up then over to the sun...

Shouldn't be too much to get it painted in 10 days, depends on the # of hours per day I suppose..

Hey guys, did some work on the boat today. Got it flipped over and made the rib/hole filet, also ground down a tapered 2" area where the end of the top cap is fused on. So how do you guys think i should build that stearn top cap back up? Do i need to remove all the gell coat from the top before it can be painted? It just started raining so i'm going to call it quits for today. Thanks guys

Sounds like a good plan to me:)

Here is my plan for the stearn end top cap fusion, i'll lay 2 layers of csm(consisting of small pieces to that i can get around curves easier) and then a piece of 1708 over that, and then a final skim coat of homemade fairing compound, which will consist of resin and cabosil. Or should i use microballoons for making fairing compound? I like the idea of putting a skim coat over the final layer of a glass layup so that i dont have to sand so much

Did you put any glass on the inside of the cut section of cap. I'm no expert but if you layed csm and 1708 underneath you might would only need 1 layer 1708 on top . Then maybe some pb with fibers to give a little strength screeded across with a straight edge to bring back to desired height . Then sand and finish up with the resin / microballoons to make it easier to sand smooth . You do not want to sand all the gell off for paint

Hey Sphelps, No i didnt put any glass on the inside cut section of the cap. What i did was i encased pieces of 3/4 inch plywood in csm and then PB'd it to the inside with clamps. That is a great idea to use a straight edge, lol didnt even think of that:lol: I gotta order some Microballoons now! All i got is the cabosil, and the supply of that is also dwindling

So i went ahead and built the stearn end cap fusion back up with A layer of csm, then 1708 and then a whole bunch of little csm patches :watermelon: Also got the last of the holes repaires, i know how much you guys drool over pictures, so heres more! Looks good to me BGVT ! Nice work and the plywood under the cap should make it plenty strong . Just don't forget when the time comes to use the 5200 on all the deck hardware penetrations so water don.t get to the plywood ..

Re: 1960's 13' MFG carefree Rebuild (complete noob, i know nothing about this!)

Hey guys, I'm currently trying to take off this bastard steering wheel, i was planning on using this old steering system, but now i am having second thoughts. Anyone know how to remove this wheel? I've removed every nut from it, but can't figure out how it comes off. I also put a layer of csm and 1708 over the transom because i had to sand out a bunch of air bubbles, can't hurt to be overkill

Another question, how should i go about prepping this for paint? Does anyone have a tutorial already written up? I was planning on filling low spots with peanut butter, and then sanding the entire hull with 180 grit, then priming. How's that sound? Thanks

Lol, i'm pretty sure that is how i need to prep for painting. I always answer my own questions, haha. But what about steering system, are those expensive? If they are really expensive i might just use this primitive steering system and maybe get my friend to weld something onto the steering wheel hub to make it look nicer, and then maybe remove all the old material and then wrap fiberglass around it, sand and then paint. But still i gotta figure out how to get the dang thing off

Have you soaked it good with some PB Blaster ? Soak it good for a while then try and pull it off . If you can get someone to help try and give it a good tap with a hammer while pulling. Or maybe heat it up a bit with a heat gun..Mine was pretty well stuck also but I just kept at it til it gave.

Re: 1960's 13' MFG carefree Rebuild (complete noob, i know nothing about this!)

Most of them are pressed fit on the shaft...
The nut just helps "ram" it home and hold it there...
PB Blast'r works well as a penetrating oil along with the heating, like S.P. mentioned
A trick I have used for years when removing steering wheels is to grab it at 9 and 3 o'clock and begin to alternately pull on it, I'll do this a few times, then switch to 12 and 6 o'clock and repeat...after a few times, they all eventually come loose...another idea is to get a steering wheel puller...although I have had more success with the previous method...

Thanks guys, I got the steering wheel off with your ideas. I just ordered some surfacing wax because i'm fed up with waiting for resin to cure and getting my sandpaper all gummy. Once it arrives i am going to make a fairing compound with the microballoons. Do i add the wax to fairing compound? My idea is to do a skim coat over the rough csm pattern of the keel, and a skim coat over the 1708 on the transom.

The transom cap repair is really nice, I was getting ideas on how to do mine, I cut my top in a very similar manor, and played with idea's on how to support and glass it from underneath. Your solution is what I will do too. I planned to use the wood underneath and glass it all in, leaving the top for cosmetic mostly. After I do the bottom side with wood and glass, I will do One layer of CSM followed by a layer of 1708 on top finished with more CSM, then grind, fare, sand, prime and paint. Should be very strong once done. Thanks for putting the picture up, they helped me a bunch.
