Congrats Giarc! nice lookin to be sure. how'd she run?

SMG, i wouldn't recommmend standing on the roof. the PO of my Starchief told me that's how the lower plexi windshield got broken

Sorry but there's NO WAY IN HECK that boat sees 38-40MPH. You MAY see 30.

Ok I have the official speed report on the Cheiftian.

At aprox. 3000 rpm I had the boat doing Fifty!




Well to be honest it was 50 kph.

I think thats where the original confusion has started with the speed debate.
The PO told me it would do 38-40 I thought he had said mph but obviously it was kph, lol.

However when you do the metric conversion it still puts it at 31 mph.
That was loaded down with all our camping gear, food, water, two anchors.
One huge over sized anchor and one proper sized anchor.
Also I dont think I was pushing it to the maximum but pretty close.

Must have been all that weight savings by going naked on all that glorious tin

30+/- is probably plenty fast in most weather. Smooth, early morning, flat as glass, w/ fore~aft weight balanced just so, WOT maybe. Full of people & gear, yeah, 30 ought be just about right

Craig if you're propped right you should be running about 4400 to 4800 RPM at WOT.

Cool! then I would assume at that RPM I could be approaching the infamous 38-40 mph.

My shifter linkages are all stretched out and beat.
I run out of forward movement on the throttle lever before I reach much over 3000 rpm but i have a lot of dead space at the begining where I get no throttle response at all.
Tried adjusting them but get no real improvement.

Even so at the 31 mph I achieved on a loaded boat and a fairly rough and windy day I am pretty satisfied with its speed.
Goes more than fast enough for me at this point but if I can get some more than why not?

Just passing on what I've been told Craig. Also if you are at WOT and not running at those rpms its my understanding the prop is holding the engine back and can cause issues with the motor. do you know what pitch/size prop you're running? These are also unloaded boat numbers....

Starting on a few new updates on the Chieftain this spring.

At the end of last summer I had a marine mechainic install a new cable from the transom down to the outdrive since that looked like more than I could handle with my limited marine experience.
It was better but still not proper. Thats two marine mechanics so far that have not been able to get the cables adjusted properly.
This spring I will be adding a twin shift so I can operate the shifting and the throttle independantly.

I am also going to install a stainless steel skeg guard since mine is a little shorter now than it was originally.
Can anyone tell me what outdrive would have been installed on this boat so I can source one accurately?

Next step is to upgrade inside the cabin.
New plumbing which will include a fresh water intake from the lake. The boat already has a passthrough on the bottom of the hull near the bow. Its blocked off and that bugs me. If its there it needs to be functional.
Potable water storage under the sink on the port side and a 12v fridge and some shelving to be installed in the little counter area on the starboard side.

Last but not last I purchased a VHF radio at the boat show over the winter so I will be building a cabinet for more storage on the inside cabin wall and incorporating the radio and some additional guages there.

Now all I need is Spring!!!

Another small update.



Wanted a cabinet inside the cabin to store wine glasses etc. :wink:
Also will include a few more practicle features.



The right side will house a VHF radio and the top front panel will hold an auxillary voltage guage and a 12V outlet.

An update on the interior upgrades I have completed for this year.
Still more to do but the priority now is to get her in the water next weekend.

On the starboard side of the boat there was a countertop but the inside of the base was not accesable, just a hollow sealed up box.Now it holds a 12v fridge and some extra storage space beside it.



Cabinet holding VHF radio, 12V outlet and battery voltage meter complete.
The cabin door was originally off to the port side, I moved it to the center. The cabinet on the port side was originally triangular in shape to allow for entry into the cabin due to the offset door. I squared it off to make its capacity larger and reinstalled the original sink.

Not sure if anyone is still following this thread but I will continue to post pics of new additions and improvements.
My latest project has been the installation of a toliet to make the wife a little more comfortable on weekend trips.

Bought a toliet from West Marine that had permanent hook up option.
Of course when i placed it where it was to be located it was 1/2" to tall.

So now I had to drop the floor. The following pics show the floor modification and hose hook up.



Hooking up vent hose.

Attaching hoses to holding tank.




Install complete!
