Todays winning lottery numbers are, 104, 103, 102, 101, 97

Oops, wait a minute, wrong section of the newspaper. I guess that is the 5 day forecast  With weather like that I probably won't be doing much outside. It's just not worth the risk of heat stroke.

Re: 1972 Glastron GT-160

Well I picked up another little project this weekend. I thought it would be good as it would give me a chance to do some glasswork on a smaller scale before jumping into the Silverline. It's a 1972 Glastron GT160.

The transom, deck and stringers were just replaced but it wasn't a very good job IMO. They used what appears to be veneer plywood. The deck isn't even adhered to the stringers and in the back it doesn't even make contact with the middle stringer. They also didn't put any knee braces back in which would put alot of stress on the transom with a bigger motor. The transom was replaced with two 3/4 pieces of plywood that weren't laminated together. There is about a 1/16 gap between the pieces. I will have to tear all this out and start over. They used West system epoxy for the build so I will probably use the 5 gallons of US Composites epoxy that I already have on hand. Another problem I found is the deck isn't wide enough to touch the hull where it needs to. It needs to be approximatly 51" wide and it's only 48. Some corners were cut and I want it done correctly. Should be a fairly easy project compared to the Silverline.

The cap is set back on but hasn't been reattatched along with all of the hardware so that will save a bunch of time. I also got all the original interior pieces which will work good for templates.

hey so i just got a boat like this from my boss at work,

everything is going good, however i have to redo the floor, and the front section which is covered.
i was wondering if you have any recommendations for thickness's of wood and or how to go about replacing the front piece which is covered or should i do my best to just put something on top and seal it with epoxy on the edges?

thanks for any help you can give.

I would go with 1/2" ply for the deck. Just be prepared for transom and stringers as well. You will probably need to pull the cap to replace the front section of the deck. If you do have to replace the transom, the cap will have to come off for sure.

If you start a resto thread, you'll likely get tons of aid from the iboats dry dock crew. Maybe more if you post up some pix of what your working on:)

Oh, and I agree w/ BN's advice:

Without having to remove the cap to access the area under the bow, you might be able to just remove a portion of the cap at the splashwell & transom to replace the wooden transom. But if the fore deck is inaccessible w/out the cap removed, it'd probably be easier to remove the entire cap...

And I wouldn't recommend this at all, in any form:

Should i do my best to just put something on top and seal it with epoxy on the edges

Re: 1972 Glastron GT-160

I did some grinding on the Glastron today. There is so much glass and resin in this thing from the previous repairs that it is taking forever. It's almost to the point I want to give up and scrap it. If I get fed up with it I will just throw a cover over it and work on it at another time. I think this is an awesome boat and would be super fun when it's done so I don't want to get rid of it. I think the puddle of resin down in the bottom of the hull is close to 3/4 of an inch thick. Luckily alot of it flakes away when hit with the grinder. I'll be back on it, or the Silverline in the morning.

The only thing worse than grinding out a hull, is having two to grind out

Cover & protect is much better. It'll be such a cool looking boat, definitely better to mothball it & come back to it ;)

Re: 1972 Glastron GT-160

Back in post 116 and 120 i talked about some roving that bridged over the strakes and a hard black filler on the edge of the deck. I was looking at some other GT restos on another site and all those have that as well. I will be grinding it all out anyway but thought some of you might like to know :)

Re: 1972 Glastron GT-160

Thanks fellas, a job would have both good and bad things to go aong with it. The good being additional fundage for my projects and the bad being no time to work on them  I guess we can't have it all.

On another note I have a quick question. What's the best way to grind out inside the strakes rght by the transom? It's a very tight fit and I don't want to do some major damage.

Here is all I can really get ground out:

I just received a phone call and I got the job I interviewed for. I start on wednesday. It will be 2nd shift which will still give me plenty of time for boat work in the mornings :D

Congrats on the new income producing location!

The best way I found to get into those really tight places is with a dremel and a diamond shaped carbide bit...gives you great control...

That would work good. Thanks for the tip!

Alrighty, glad to see the forums are back up and running. I have got some more progress done. I got the rest of the ski locker and deck pulled out. Also been doing some grinding, it's been getting better but still not much fun.
