Re: New to me 18 ft SC SS

EZ is right again. The bow stringers do bend a little to conform. I have a HF air riveter and my only problem is the mandrels stick every now and then. No big deal considering the amount of rivets I have installed.:D I have found that Fastenall has good prices on the aluminum rivets. If you don't have a store close by you can get them over the net. Keep up the good work and make sure SWMBO does not get mad....you have a way to go and you will need her support.;)

Re: New to me 18 ft SC SS

hey guys,

Ive been pondering over something since I removed the floor. When I finally had a chance to get my head down in the bilge I noticed that the top two bolts had sheered away from the knee brace, taking the bracket corners with them (transom side). Ive been thinking of ways to correct this issue, and have seen a few done on the boards, but most involved welding...

So what Ive come up with is pretty simple, but I thought Id run it by a few people first. Instead of making a bracket or welding additional metal to the brace, how about running one SS bolt through the transom and through the "back bone of the knee brace and tie the top together in that manor? The four lower bolts and bracket holes are still in good shape and so are the rivets and bracket holes along the keel. Let me know your opinions!

Re: 197? SS Inside Out Restoration (New Title)

Looking forward to getting some work done today! I plan on getting the wire wheel anf the shop vac out and cleaning up the inside of the hull in prep for some sealer. Instead of gulvits I have another product called "coat it" made by goop. Its worked well for me in the past with other boats and I happen to have a few gallons left! I did a leak test this morning and even though I didn't leak a drop!, I've learned my lessons in the past. Better off sealing anyway then risking anything rattling anything loose in the future.

On another note, the port side wood covering the front of the console was completely rotted when I removed it a few nights ago. When I removed it the darn thing fell apart right in my hands leaving me with nothing to trace. Anyone know if the starboard side is identical? So I can just trace that side and flip it?

And if anyone can chime in on the knee brace situation I'd really appreciate it! =). Thanks

j, i'm having trouble visualizing what you mean on the knee brace. can you get a pic or 2? but in general, yeah, you can often use stainless bolts and maybe have a right angle bent up from thick sheet alum....or get some of the 2"alum L-channel they sell at Slowes/Home Despot....to reinforce it.

except for the few minor maintence issues, two new pedistal seats and maybe one of those really cool stern seats

and welcome to the world of old boats.......amazing how things snowball, ain't it? ;)

Re: 197? SS Inside Out Restoration (New Title)

Wire wheeled the hull on Thursday in prep for some sealer. I would have to say it cleaned up beyond my expectations! Too bad its never going to be seen, a little work with a buffing wheel and it would look like a mirror :D. Anyways, I think Im making some good progress. Tuesday Im sealing the hull and floor boards with the help of a few friends and a couple of cold ones.

Im still debating whether or not to paint the transom while I have the motor off. Plans are to repaint the entire boat in the fall, however I really dont want to remove the motor twice just to paint. Anyone out there just tape off the motor while it was still hanging? And if so how did it turn out?

As for today If the wife lets me Id like to power wash the inside as I didnt have the time on Thurs. Seems kind of fitting for a crummy day like today! Its pouring out there right now and I figure Id get soaked anyway :facepalm: Wish me luck!

BTW pis of the stringers were before I re riveted them. I there were only 7 rivets holding the damn things on:eek:

Re: 197? SS Inside Out Restoration (New Title)

A update on the HF riveter I bought... It took me over a hour and a half to get the stupid thing dialed in so I wouldnt get jammed everytime I set a rivet. I still cant get the damn thing to collect the mandrels in the collector! As for now they fall back out the nose, which is something I can handle. Just like most other power tools from HF... Is it worth the $35? Yes. Will it save me time? Yes. Do I expect it to last though the entire project? No!

Re: 197? SS Inside Out Restoration (New Title)

Had a small break in the rain yesterday so I pulled the power washer out and gave her a good rinse. With as hard as it was coming down in the morning I guess I could have just pulled her out of the garage and let mother nature handle it lol. As you can see from the photo I still havent gotten around to removing the steering wheel. Its on the list, but isnt very high up there...

BTW, I recruted my brother for the power washing! I chose to stay dry and finish sanding a few bow seats:D

Re: 197? SS Inside Out Restoration (New Title)

hey guys,

Im getting all my ducks in a row for my attack on the transom next weekend and have a quick question. Ive noticed on a few of the rebuilds that some of the people have the transom wood out but the splash well is still in its place. Can the wood be removed w/o removing the well? Or have these people set the well back in its place for the time being?

I really wanted to leave the splashwell in place on my Jet. Unfortunately, the only way I was going to get that transom out was to take the splashwell out first. Lord knows I tried.

Now I have a great excuse to cut that splashwell waaaay down before I put it back in.;)

Have fun dood!:D

I didn't have to remove the splashwell on either of my Starcraft projects.

Re: 197? SS Inside Out Restoration (New Title)

I sealed the inside of the hull last night. Things went really well, a bit cool, but well! I used a product called "Coat It" made by Goop. Its worked real well for me in the past on other projects such as the Queen Merrie and a few other small tinnies. I like this stuff a lot better than Gulvits, for one theres no question where its already gone down as its black in color. Another reason is its a lot thicker than the Gluvits as well which really helps for those vertical rivits. Most of all I like it bacause its CHEAP! Only $39.99 for a 8 pound kit.

I didnt bother with the rivits on the ribs, it really didnt seem to make much sense. I know others have done it on other projects, but whats the point of only doing one side?

So Im saving the rib rivits for when I paint the outside of the hull.

Here are some amazing epoxy pics lol Enjoy!

I ran across the stuff by accident once and I havent used anything else since! It works really well for older snowblowers with metal chutes, stops them from clogging up all the time.:D

Re: 197? SS Inside Out Restoration (New Title)

Ive noticed that some people have converted to inboard tanks on there restos. This is something that Id like to do as well but Im having trouble with finding one that might fit. Ive seen plenty on CL but to this date havent found one that allows enough room for the filler neck and hose.

Anyone have any suggestions? Also I know that there needs to be drop with the filler hose, but how much is required? I dont want to install it and find out later that there isnt enough of a drop in the line causing trouble with fill ups?

I came across a real nice 21 gallon tank a few days ago, however it only allowed for a 1" drop from where the filler hose enters the floor to the neck on the tank. I think its saft to say that one wont work...

Re: 197? SS Inside Out Restoration (New Title)

I've been looking into that myself. A purchased tank in the 25-30 gallon range sells for around $400 with the sending unit. Another down side is the floor supports might need modifications. My current plan is to design one myself, get the sheets fabricated at a local shop for hopefully under $200 then get one of my buddies here at work to weld it up for a 30 pack. When its all said and done I'll probably still have $400 into it but I won't have to change the floor.

Here is some info I collected....

Re: 197? SS Inside Out Restoration (New Title)

I thought I got a good deal on a 30 gal aircraft aluminum tank which I had modified at a friends welding shop. Ended up costing the same as a new one. He turned one fitting and added one. I put in a clear fuel filter in a fuel line that went from the bottom of the tank to the top for a gauge, and strapped it down tight in the front of the bow. The only problem, I left the 2" filler at a 90 degree angle where it goes in and the gas backs up and comes out the top while filling, if I use anything but a can and pour slow. I should have got a 45 degree on and had my buddy weld it in. That's one of the weights I added to help keep the bow down in my Crestliner which I probably didn't have to motor set propery I am told on here. It always felt like it was going to flip when I hit the throttle.

Re: 197? SS Inside Out Restoration (New Title)

I made some great progress last night! I finally hunted down a hoist I could barrow so I could remove the motor, there was no way I was going to buy one just to use it for a week. With that said the motor is off and so is the transom!!! It went fairly quick esp. since all four bolts holding the motor sheered and the splash well was missing atleast half the screws! The wood was in decent shape considering its age, however it was bowed 1.5" from true. I had a interesting time getting it out considering its "new shape", but nothing a eye bolt and the engine hoist couldnt handle! As for putting the replacement back in, I have about 3/4" of excess gunnal materal hanging over the slot for the transom. Anyone else have this? Should I just cut it? should I bend it up? I guess it doesnt really matter because the two end caps will cover it, I just dont want to do a hack job.

Yesterday I also painted both consoles and the bow seat support. They had been repainted in the past and were a battleship gray color, not really my taste. So I sprayed them with rattle cans in white, big mistake!! Not the color but choosing cans, I should have sprayed them with the HVLP. Not only did I go through 4 cans, but my fingers are killing me and it covered like sh!t!!! I will have to throw another coat or so with the HVLP to clean them up.

Anyway, here are some pics ENJOY!

I hate waiting, so I decided to hang the floor for epoxy. So far no runs

We all trim off that excess material over the transom (or bend it out of the way. I prefer to just cut it). I coulda told you about the rattle cans. Bad news. I painted my whole Jupiter with them
