love that wiring. totally aside from the "minor" steering issues. but really, when some of our number have come home safe from outings with the steering working backwards, i don't see how awful a lttle thing like not being able to steer a 40+mph boat can be.....

Have a few more beers and look at it again, DII. I'm sure the PO was in the tank when he "fixed" the steering and thought "better than factory now". Not like it could be a life or death situation. I think I see your trim problem too. He re-wired right after working on the steering and had a few more drinks.

Well it's been raining so much here they have shut down a lot of the roads in the oil patch, so we are very limited for work. that means I can work on the SS.

Started attacking the demo some more, by pulling the port side windshield, bow seating and side panels. The consuls on this boat are a very different design in comparison to the smaller SS's. The top of the consuls are integrated right into the hull and the top of the gunwal. I cannot remove them with out drilling external hull rivets, and ruining the paint Yikes!! The side panels are also mounted in a differnt way but should not be a problem. Once I got the front seating and the side panels off I pulled the rear port side floor section 12 feet long piece of 1/2"ply. I then started digging foam, lots of water and at the front gas soaked.

Second and third pics, if you can see all the black foam that is gas soaked, what a stink.

The next photo the yellow arrow shows another rotten spot in the fill hose where it was encased in the foam, that is the tird one.

Hey B2, I wondered that as well there was signs of mice, but both the fill and vent hoses were completley encased in soggy foam.

Man Glen, you that's a lot of digging there... holy smokes. It really looks like a huge boat inside now that you have removed most of the innards. Not cool about the gas though. I am surprised that the previous PO never stopped and went "why am I smelling gas all the time"? Good thing it's a bow rider... odds are, it would have been a reef at the bottom of some lake by now!

Interesting little square plates that join the sides to the bottom hull right around the the main rivet area that runs the length of the boat. I guess they wanted to make sure there was lots of strength.

Hey Jim, Ya I'm tempted to try lighting a piece of the foam to see if it burns :facepalm:. The plates from the gunwal to the under side of the ribs is a feature they started sometime in the early 80's as the hulls were cracking at the end of the ribs.

I thought about dumping a bunch of fuel in my hull and lighting it on fire as a foam removal technique - then I remembered that the foam was entirely saturated with water and the alum hull would melt out before the foam actually burned

Hey Jason, that would work, that @$% foam would still be there and you can wrap some new aluminum around it, OH Right it's still WET.

Well the foam in this one went right to the stern under the trarnsom, quess what that looks like I spose now the motor has to come out so I can replace the transom too. Good thing I'm starting early on this one.

Given the clamp on the steering I'm surprised the fuel lines weren't wrapped with duct tape, One good thing - The paint on the outside of the hull is good.

Hey GA, isn't that the truth. There was no way to know the fuel line was rotten, other than the smell of gas and mold. The only part visible was the last 8"s or so where it connected to the tank, the rest was encased in foam or behind the side panels. I'm real glad the paint on the hull is okay. I am planning on painting the top though as it is faded to badly to bring back.

Took most of the day today but the interior is all out including that nasty foam. 18 large yard garbage bags full. Will be fun to figure out how to replace the floor in this monster, the sheets run bow to stern and the rear peices are 3.5ft wide and 12 ft long and end at the front edge of the consuls. Tomorrow I am hoping to get the last bits of foam scraped up and all the crap vacumed out. Then I can start on removing the motor.

Although expensive, marine ply here is available in 12' lengths. I've tried to scarf plywood, with less then marginal results. Dimensional lumber, no problems, but the ply always seem to 'kink' at the end of the scarfs once glued up.... But perhaps it's carpenter's error, not the ply or the joint.

A few of the plywood boat websites have details for finger jointing plywood to make continuous run ply long enough to do the hull sides as '1 piece':

Laminating 2 sheets of 1/2 your final deck thickness" w/ staggered seams may be an alternative, if you have a 4'+ by 12'+ flat enough surface. The Starcraft hanger just might have some room available for this work:facepalm:

Based on previous work, it'll go pretty good & look great, however you get the deck in, so... carry on

I'm going to load it all in the pick up for one load to the landfill to see what it all weighs, pics coming tomorrow, my arms were to sore to hold the camera still after fighting with all that foam, old guy you know.

Thanks JB, I think I will be able to use the same approach as on the smaller SS's, with doubles on the under side to join tthe seats and at reinforcement fo the seats. I'm having trouble figuring out how to do the two length wise joints where the side pieces meet the center section that need to be removable, but water proof.That is what soaked a lot of the foam was a poor design here.
