Okay, the admiral said no to the big spending trip to Montana, she says the boat budget is getting pretty slim, as I wasn't supposed to start this one till fall. So I talked her into letting me pick up a couple sheets of 3/4, a gallon of varnish and a couple jugs of Gorrila glue locally, so I could get the transom back in. Got it cut out and glued up, trim it all up in the morning and trial fit for the key hole cut out.

Ahhh gotta listen to the admiral!! Good compromise... I see you learned the art there of! At least this way you can get the motor back in and go back to the thinking/planning/sipping/staring mode for the summer!

Well, spose as I see it you are way, way, ahead of the game if this is a fall rebuild!

I would not have even started this, if the weather would let us go to work, so it is a compounding problem can't work not making any money, tearing into the boat need money !!!!!

Hey Jason, the only reason I'm worried about it, is it stopping the gluvit from getting into the rivets and seams?

wow, Glen your flying along and with demo done your starting the rebuild already!! Love that 'cherry picker' that doubles as an engine hoist. Flatlander country (from the photos)...reminds me of Alberta as I have family back there. Glad to hear your gas tank had no corrosion. The outside hull really is in amazing great shape...good score on that hull!!

Hey Rusty thanks for stopping by, ya the paint is in real nice shape, so I'm hoping I can work around it.

I can't believe how shoddy the workmanship was on the the origional transom, I'm thinking there was some SC employees that didn't give a crap in the mid 80's after seeing this one Darcy's and my 84 16

shoddy in what regard? if you mean clumsy saw work, i don't think that problem originated in the 80s. most of the wood in my mid-60s boats was apparently cut out by someone worse with a saw than me, and that's saying something.

but finding stuff like that sure makes you inspired on a resto. you can do better work than the factory did. sorta like swapping engines on British sports cars....my engineering CAN'T be any worse than the Brit auto industry

No doubt in my mind this SS will be way better than factory when you are done Glen, no doubt about it.

Hey B2, ya shoddy in bad inaccurate cuts, the transom has to be a minimum of 2"thich where the o/d bolts on so SC scabed on a 1/2"piece of ply with 6 of those little ring nails they use on transom caps, and the piece was not even big enough for the inside transome motor mount piece to sit on.

I'm never bored with transoms getting built!

No doubt in my mind this SS will be way better than factory when you are done Glen, no doubt about it.

No doubt buddy! On my Islander I hoisted a couple dry fits, killer! Then I got smart and used a hoist/Keeper Strap to get it in/out. I'm slow....

Out to the lake for the weekend, so not much progress. One coat of varnish left to put on the transom and then get rid of the yellow crap on the bottom. Was digging out a little bit of foam left in the engine mount stringers and have found the the wood inside the aluminum is mush. These will be a problem to fix as the stringers are mounted in the center of the front opening and won't allow the wood to come out or go in, and the stringers on this boat are riveted through the hull. I am going to have to figure out how to cut an opening in the stringer to get the old out and the new in with out loosing any strength. I will post up some photos later.

I'd probably knock the rivets out and remove them. That way you dont have to hack anything up. I removed the two inside ribs up in my keel to get at the keel seam better with the Gluvit and wasn't that big of a deal, prolly 50 rivets each or so.

Hey Jason, DJ I checked out #219, I wish!! I will get photos this morning so you can see what I'm up against, i did spend an hour yesterday looking at the sitution, and it may not be that bad.

Okay so here is what I have. The first photo shows the bulkhead right in front of the engine mount stringers.

I looked at this real close and thought it was riveted on the ends to the stringers and through the hull on the bottom, but the bottom of the bulkhead just hangs there, it was the rib I saw riveted to the hull.
Bulkhead removed:

Once I removed the bulkhead, I thought this will be easy all I have to do is lean the stringers over and pull the lumber out of the engine mounts. Well it was even easier than that, Unlike your Islander Jason that had those nice laminated beams, this only had four loose, not even glued, pieces of 1/2 inch ply, totaly rotten.

One shot of the new transom all sealed up and ready to go back in.

Looking really good glen. Glad it was "cake" getting the lumber out! Transom looks strong and ready to roll.
