Re: 59 Rude foot problems

I've had some luck fixing that common problem by laying the outboard on its side, then using a scratch awl to fiddle the shift yoke back into position. When the hole is centered under the screw hole, you can put the pivot screw back in.

However, if you can't do that, you'll have to remove the skeg part and reposition the yoke. You'll need the necessary gaskets, etc. to seal it back up.

Give the scratch awl a try. Fiddle away. You can't mess things up any more than they already are, and you'll probably get it positioned right...eventually.

The phillips screw is for the shifter yoke. You fix it one of two ways:
Get a sharp pointy awl and try and move the shift yoke around through the hole until you can line up the hole. Very frustrating and mostly unsuccessful.
OR
Disassemble the gearcase and put it back together.

Sorry! Many have made this mistake. If you search the site for "don't remove the phillips screw!" I'm sure you'll get many hits......I wish they would have made that pin with an Allen head or something that would discourage people from taking it out....

You can get it. As mentioned, lay if flat. Use and awl and a bright light and wiggle the shifter until it lines up. It might take a tad but it's easier than taking the skeg off.

Re: 59 Rude foot problems

yeah i've done it before, but the shifter wouldnt move by hand so i thought maybe the screw was in the wrong place.. so i took it out, put the lower unit on and that wasnt the problem.

going to go take it off again in a minute..

oh yeah did i mention that a philips screw is keeping me off the water?

haha

i'm done with the boat when this goes in except for seats and carpet

Re: 59 Rude foot problems

yeah i wish i had read this before haha i wouldnt have screwed around with it all afternoon.

we found out the hard way that you have to drop the skeg. we got it off, and as it says, the fork was out, so we put it back on, the seal looked good so we RTV'd it [what the shop said to do] and put it back on just now

tomorrow around lunch time it should be alright to run so i'll fill the oil up and try to run it.

when filling the oil, just squirt it into the gearcase at the top screw until its level with the bottom of the hole .. right?

That's the screw that allows your entire engine to fall apart. Since you have already removed it, don't breathe too hard near your motor ... if you do, there will be an immediate ruckus like you've never seen before and your entire outboard will unzip like a stack of dominoes .... really ..... I swear! ;)

Remove the lower slotted screw on the opposite side of the L/U from the phillips screw. Remove the upper slotted screw. Squirt the new L/U oil into the lower hole until it starts to come out the upper hole. Do not remove the oil tube, put the top screw in first. This creates a small vaccuum and keeps the oil in the unit while you put the lower screw back in. Make sure you replace the seals or O rings on your screws with new ones.

Re: 59 Rude foot problems

On the other side of the l/u is a slotted head screw, this is the actual drain hole for the lower unit. leave the phillips head screw alone. remove the slotted head screw. look at the pic that Shizzy posted in this thread, it will help you locate the drain screw. You have to fill it from the bottom screw because if you try to fill it from the top, the displaced air inside the lower unit will bubble the oil out all over you and the lower unit. Like I said before, the top screw hole will act as a vent to allow the air to escape as you put oil in through the bottom, slotted screw hole. when the oil begins to come out of the top hole, put the top screw, with a new O ring, in the top hole. this will form a seal and not allow much oil to run out the bottom hole as put the bottom screw, with a new O ring, in.

This is all done with the lower unit installed.

Re: 59 Rude foot problems

FYI, the drain screw is not on the other side of the gearcase. On the Big Twin style units, it is on the very bottom of the gearcase bullet, forward of the skeg...
