Looking good Kelly! That polishing is alot of work but it sure looks sweet! What kind of polish are you using on it?

Thanks BH, I am freaking sore tonight that is for sure. In fact I had to take some pain meds due to everything hurting so bad, been a long time since I was this bad...lol Anyway I have not been slacking the last couple of days. This is where I started out yesterday.

Ended the day here and also started back up at this point today.

And here is where I ended today.

And the other side.

The part that is not polished from the rub rail to the top will be painted. Am hoping to finish up the polish tomorrow and then put on the sharkhide. From watching the video it should be fairly easy and quick as well, I am hoping so anyway.

I'd say you almost have it licked, Kelly!!!! Man, what a difference between the polished and unpolished.

Wow, can't believe that polished alum.

Just a little heads up...

The SH dries pretty fast and you'll want to keep a wet edge, so, long strokes and no coffee breaks till it's all on there, eh.

Also, do a spot check with lacquer thinner to clean. On my set up it left major streaks but your polished may show different. I ended up going with mineral spirits for the final wipe down before the SH.

Yea that polished aluminum looks pretty good I think. We will see how well it stays that way, hope this SH does it job well and protects it good.

Thanks for the heads up Jason. I knew it dried fast but did not know that it was that fast, so I guess I can't be usual slow self when it comes to the SH.

Ok, I will do a check with the lacquer thinner before I go at it. Thanks for the info Jason, it is appreciated.

Wow! these polished aluminum projects are amazing. Those pictures above could be used in an advertisement for sharkhide - great work! Makes me wish my boat had those cool starcraft ribs along the side, i would have to reconsider my paint scheme ideas.

Smart lady right there buddy!

I ended up using a ton of the alum I chopped out of my Islander for all sorts of stuff on both the Islander and the Jet.

Hey, looks like most of the other Starcraft guys are on vacation or something. I was thinking we'd see them here hollaring and cussing that you are going to cut this Islander:eek:

Looks like you are just stuck with me, and as you know, I'm not afraid of putting boats under the knife.;):D

Hey guys you know there is a company called, oh man they're in Indiana somewhere. It'll come to me. Anyway they make a boat called the Mariner that is basically a cut up Islander. Oh yea it's Starcraft Boat Co.

If ya got one of them thar Mariners you wouldn't need ta butcher up a perfectly good boat. Just saying, that's all. They come in cc too, if you need more deck room.

Just kidding Kelly, it's been awhile since I looked in on you. Trying to make the rounds. Good luck my Starcraft Bro.

Re: Well I did it now! 67 Islander Rebuild

Thanks for stopping in guys and thanks for all the compliments on the hull.

And BD, I know that there are Mariners out there but not to many in this area and any that would be around would be spendy. I have just come to the conclusion that the cabin on this boat is just not big enough for much use to us. My wife is only 5'2" and she has to stoop way over to go in it. So we feel it would make a really nice open boat, if I could find something with a good price I would not have gone that way. But I have been looking before I made the decision and just have not been able to find anything that was a decent price. I know that you were kidding and even if you weren't it is no biggie, this is just something that we both feel would work better for us. A 22 ft open boat sounds like a good thing to me anyway....:)

Re: Well I did it now! 67 Islander Rebuild

I do have a question for you guys. How big of an outboard could be put on a boat like 22 ft Islander? I may have access to another one that used to be an I/O but he put a bracket on it and now is selling it due to health issues, but does not have a motor on it.

Re: Well I did it now! 67 Islander Rebuild

Thanks EZ, that is cool. I bet it would really cruise with a big motor like that on it. But would that be a bit big for the boat though? I should have asked what motor would you suggest to put on a boat like that?

I am going to go talk to the guy tomorrow and see what he wants for it. I met a guy today that told me about the boat, it is his dad's boat project. His dad got sick and his son wants nothing to do with it so the dad is selling it. So we will see what happens tomorrow. The son said he has not seen the boat for some time and does not know what kind of shape it is in for sure.

That Islander could certainly handle something in the 200 + range, but that thing would fly. That would be huge power for that boat especially now that she has no hat on. (you'd need a 2nd job to cover the fuel bill too).

If you don't want a go-fast boat I'd suppose anything in the 115 to 150 range would be plenty comfortable.

Cabin boat turned cuddy, IO turned OB on a bracket, now that would be a heck of a transformation.

horiconducker turned his islander into a SC and used a 150 and said it performed well.....just for comparison.

I know others have applied shark hide, but I'll still say that is some serious stuff. People have died, while using it at boat companies. Of course now they take proper precautions. If your doing it right there, outside, you should be fine. I might still set up a box fan in front of me though.

This all may not apply if that is a different shark hide formula than what I am thinking of.

Wow, that is pretty serious! I only took a couple of swigs of SH and was ok;)

I think.

I spend lots of time on a 23' fiberglass Seaswirl with a full hardtop...and it runs great with a 225hp Yamaha. I'd also recommend a 140-175hp range, it all depends on how fast you need to go:)
