Ya those caps are actually fairly easy to remove, and the boats do come off the trailer easy. They are alot lighter than I thought. Before I got rid of the chief I weighed it for s&g's and hull and cap weighed in at 620lbs.

Whoah baby! Man, ez's title for this thread is spot on!

Tell ya what, with that much off the boat I would be very tempted to rebuild it as something very different than what might look like an Islander:eek:

Great to see that you are back at it Kelly:)

Yea BN, it really does not weigh that much and am very happy how it turned out that way. Not sure how much she weighs but I know she is not that much.

Oh Jason, you are reading my mind buddy. I am really thinking about changing things up, just not sure as the wife liked the idea of even the little cabin. You know, for like the potty and such. But what would you have in mind with what you would make out of it. I like to have ideas thrown out there so I have more options.

Hey rrumba, thanks buddy. Things will get better, just have to have the mind set for it to be so is all. As for the 2x4's, they were a must. Without support I do believe that the sides would have bent way to much and been damaged. Even though the boat does not weigh that much, it is still a lot of weight on those very flimsy sides. Before I put in the 2x4's I had it up on its side and it was bowing really bad. It looked like if I had tried to flip it all the way over without support the sides would have caved in.

If the wife wants a potty, hmmmmmm, yah my ideas might not get very far.

Well, I thought about going this route with my Islander but the guys pointed out how much the kiddos would enjoy the cabin so I left it intact.

But, I very carefully considered going like this...
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16/HillbillyBowyer/TinCan.jpg[img]

I was thinking just cut the actual cabin roof off and move the windshield bracket forward, install. You'd have a giant deck, a cabin that would not need to be rebuilt (huge time saver, huge), keep a bunch of storage space up in the bow there, and still maintain a closed bow for the big water.

Or....

Center Console:cool:

Will this be a big water fishing boat for you Kelly? Or a big river fishing boat? Or a cruiser?

You have some good ideas there Jason and I like them. I pulled up the thread that you posted and saw the liquid limo, that is one sweet ride dude and the wife likes the lay out. Yea not rebuilding the cabin would be a huge plus on my side, and have been thinking about that for some time. I was thinking that the cabin on a 22 ft boat is just not very big at all and to be honest it would not be big enough for a few of my poles to even fit. I am liking this idea a whole lot. And cutting the roof off would be way simple and just move the windshield up to where the front part of the cap attaches would be simple as well. This boat will be for sure on the big river but could also go out in the really big pond out here. Oh boy, things are starting to run around in my head and that is never a good thing. It causes things to happen that I usually screw up one way or another....:) I can build a good big water boat and still use it for a cruiser, but the boat was going to be used for fishing more than anything.

Yup, that was what I was stewing over on mine for just a short stretch there.

Bad part is, no cabin. Good part is, gigantic deck.

I can't wait to see this polished up. It looks huge flipped, I'm more excited to see this than I was my own rig.

Wow,...I just read through the whole thing,...

Yea Jason I really thought the cabin would be cool, but after looking at the boat some more I realized that there is not that much deck space in the boat between the cabin and the dog house. I saved a pic of the Liquid Limo and am really liking it the more I look at it. I think that the cabin is going to be going away, the wife is even buying off on it.....:)

Yea BH I am excited to see her polished up as well. I am waiting on the sharkhide and aluminum polish to show up so I can get it done. Hopping that it will show up tomorrow but not counting on it. And you know what, it does not look that big sitting in my yard to me. And that rig of yours is very sharp looking bud. I wanted to polish mine since I got it but was not sure how I was going to get the paint off. Oh and by the way, the bottom paint is now stripped off.

Teamster, this boat almost turned into an outboard with an offshore bracket. The only that stopped me was the cost of the OB, and not knowing how to mount the bracket. Then I also got a new motor and OD from a glasser for next to nothing, so that helped in the decision in keeping her an I/O. But it would not have been a tiller buddy, I personally really don't like tiller boats myself. Been in a few and liked the boats but they are just not for me.

Well I did not slack to much on the hull, here is are some pics of the hull with the paint taken off.

Still waiting on the sharkhide to get here so I can polish her up. I did take Sunday off so that I can work on her, just hope it shows up today.

Well it has been decided that it is no longer going to be a cabin boat. This will look more like a 22 ft Holiday than it will an Islander and will give me tons more room on the deck. Here is a pic of how I plan on doing the surgery of the top. What do you guys think?

I am hoping that it will turn out something like this, hope NB doesn't mind me stealing a pic of the Liquid Limo.

That hull is looking good Kelly!

You'll surely have a bunch of fit and finish issues to work through by going this route. At the same time you'll be avoiding a bunch of fit and finish issues that you would have had to deal with in the cabin.

Not sure if you picked up on it yet but you'll also gain about 8" - 10" of extra width in the cockpit (extra space) by lopping off those gunwale riser deals. Nice and roomie;):D

Re: Well I did it now! 67 Islander Rebuild

Thanks Jason, stripping all that paint off was a real pain in the hiney.

Yea that is the only thing that worried me are the fit and finish issues. I am working on them in my head not and not sure what I am going to do but will figure something out I am sure. I don't think that I would have had any issues with the fit and finish on the cabin though as I took everything out without breaking them so I have good templates. Not that I am going to need them now though. I also won't have to worry about that stupid window in the front and sealing it up as it was going to be a pain in the hindend. And the wife sucked all the fun out of my balloon yesterday by not letting me start cutting things up. She said to wait and figure things out for sure before I start cutting. I already know what I want and it would be nice to get that top cap out of my way as well.

Yes I did notice that I would be gaining more width in the cockpit and that is going to be great. The more room the better especially when it involves fishing.:)

Smart lady right there buddy!

I ended up using a ton of the alum I chopped out of my Islander for all sorts of stuff on both the Islander and the Jet.

Hey, looks like most of the other Starcraft guys are on vacation or something. I was thinking we'd see them here hollaring and cussing that you are going to cut this Islander:eek:

Looks like you are just stuck with me, and as you know, I'm not afraid of putting boats under the knife.;):D

Nice work! I have the same idea about putting the 2x4's across the hull to rigid it up for the flip. Did you roll it over by hand??

I don't mind you Jason, cause you are not afraid of making changes to things like this. I agree that the wife is smart about stopping me yesterday but today is another day:) Yea I figured that there would be all kinds of people wanting to skin me for doing a chop job on the Islander, but it will better fit my needs this way. And I will try to use as much of the aluminum as I can but figure that I am going to have to buy a couple of sheets to do it all, no biggie though. It will still be a lot cheaper than buying a new boat.

Yea TGP, the flip would not have happened had I not put in the 2x4's. The sides are just not stiff enough to handle the weight of that boat, it is a 22 footer. There have been guys flip 16 footers without adding the 2x4's as they are a bit more stiff due to being shorter. Yes I did just flip it over by hand, it was pretty easy flipping it upside down. Flipping it back over is going to take a little more though as there is a different balance point with it upside down. But it should not be to bad though, as soon as I get the bottom polished it is going to go back over and onto the trailer.

Re: Well I did it now! 67 Islander Rebuild

I really have not been slacking to much, work has a bad way of getting in the way of doing stuff. As I stated earlier I was thinking of making the Islander into something like a holiday, I drilled all the rivets out of the cabin roof so that I could separate the cabin sides. I did this so if I changed my mind I could just put it back together. So I got to looking at it and decided it was time to do it. Here is the first patient to be operated on, notice the scalpel sitting there...:)

100_0876.jpg

It took me a bit to get the nerve to actually do the cutting though, it was like I was going to operate on a part of myself or something. Well here is the done deed and beyond the point of no return.

100_0877.jpg

Not sure if I am doing this right but sure gonna give it a shot though. I think that I will be able to get it done though, just might take a little bit longer.

Re: Well I did it now! 67 Islander Rebuild

Well my sharkhide and aluminum polish showed up late in the week this week and so the top cutting has stopped for now, still need to cut the other side but it can wait. So now it is time to start polishing the bottom up and see how it goes. And so far it is not to bad, but my hull is pretty beat up and there are lots of scratches and dings and gouges in it. The wife took this one while I was polishing, did not think it turned out to bad.

100_0879.jpg

Had to take a break and here is what it looked like after a lot of work. It takes a longer to polish this thing than what I was thinking it would, and it being rather warm here did not help that much either. The temps were running in the high 80's to low 90's, was starting to wonder if I was going to melt. Not used to the heat and it was taking its toll on me that is for sure.

100_0883.jpg

Went and got an easyup so I could have a little shade while working. Found trying to polish in direct sunlight was making the hull to hot and slowing progress down a whole lot. Here is a pic of one side where I had to just try the polish out to see how it would look on the sides of the boat. I think it is going to go pretty well.

100_0885.jpg

Well one side of the bottom is polished and now working on the other, here is where I left off last night. Looking fairly good so far I think. I do know I am not going to try and remove all the scratches and stuff on the bottom, it would just be to much to do.

100_0891.jpg

I am hoping that I can finish the bottom today and get a coat of sharkhide on the bottom as it is my last day off and go back to work tomorrow.

Re: Well I did it now! 67 Islander Rebuild

Well I just polished my fingers off this weekend and it is no where near done. But the bottom is done, just did not have enough time to get it wiped down with lacquer thinner so that I could apply the sharkhide. Here is yours truly doing his thing and was way tired when the wife snapped this pic.

000_0005.jpg

And this is as far as I got on the sides before I had to quit due to eating dinner and then darkness. The wife came out and told me it was time to be done playing for the weekend. But am happy so far with how it is turning out.
