Ok here is another stupid question but just have to ask. Should I put ZC primer on the metal part of the transom when I do the patch. There is going to be 5200 between the patch and the transom but was not sure if it needed the ZC or not. And I am thinking of doing the flush rivets for the patch so that it will look a bit cleaner of an application. That and the patch may not be as noticable with flush rivets holding it on.

If you keep changing plans, like the open bow, you'll never get done. When I asked my wife if she wanted me to look into it, she said "why". I'll leave it alone for now. The other boat has taken me 14 years so far to get where it is, I have to save something for later.

Well I have been informed that it is not going to be an open bow boat. Exact words were NO WAY IN H&$* is that going to happen, so the decision has been made for me. And you are right heyyou, if I keep messing with it it will never get done. So back to plan one and that is to keep her original for the most part. It was just a fun thought for a while is all.

Hey KellyC,
what did you do or decide about the patch? Not sure if this would work for you, maybe someone here has tried this product before and can chime in. I was thinking about using it to help repair some of the corrosion, holes and ripped rivets in mine once i had them pounded out flat using dollies and hammers (autobody tools)

they even have some videos you can check out. I dont see why it would not work and then where the corrosion is bad that there is a through hole in the transom you could use it from the inside as well to help bond the weaker areas. I was thinking about usint it to go around the corroded rivet holes and bad corrosion areas as well and then sand/light grind down to make it flush.

I will be ordering some of the alloy 5 not sure if it will be the starter kit or the full kit of 3/32, unless some one chimes it that it is not worth it. If i do order some let me know and i will send you a couple with some flux to try out.

I'm about to lay a patch on my transom and the plan is to clean with h20 and viniger then use this stuff befor shmeering the 5200 between patch and transom.

Kelly, do you want this thread in Resto instead of SC? Happy to move it unless you want to leave it here.

Hey there rrumba, thanks for stopping by and checking on my thread. No I have not tried the Muggy product and it looks very interesting. I have however bought some durafix and was very disappointed in the product. I would never suggest to anyone to try that stuff as it just not work like it looks to be advertised. If you do get some please let us all know how well it works as I would be very interested in the results. I do not have an oxy/acetylene setup and that is something you would need to have for any work on a large surface due to the aluminum acting like a huge heat sink, which they tell you in the videos. If that stuff does work I would be more than happy to buy an oxy.acetylene setup, can't never have enough tools:D.

Hey Mike, that looks pretty interesting stuff there. So is it spendy? And I like the idea of using something like that between the patch and hull to help prevent more corrosion in case water does make its way between them. How thick is the patch you are going to put on your hull buddy? I was thinking of using 1/8" for mine and it is going to be almost the whole transom. After taking the wood out I think that it would be a real good idea to do this.

That would be sweet if you would do that Ez, I was just thinking that as well buddy. You have ESP or something?

You could also shorten the name to make it easier or whatever if you want to buddy.

Thanks Ez, you da man.

...and probably garbage, hack, ghetto...

Ah, that's ok.

Shoot, his boat is peeling so bad I think he's having to rub in aloe three times a day...

Sorry I'm late...Street signs (ahem, I mean my alum sheet metal) is 12 ga. (.080") The Prekote stuff is $54 /gallon. Pricey but i'm hoping to make it last for the whole project. Got it online through Aircraft Spruce.

Re: Well I did it now! 67 Islander Rebuild

Thanks for the info Mike, sorry I'm late as well. I got a piece of 1/8" 5052 I believe, it is big enough to cover the entire transom. The Prekote sounds like something good. Let me know how it goes for you.

Not much to update guys, went on my vacation to see me kids and the wife's family. We had a really good time and even got to go to a cruise night in Emmett where my wife is from. Got to see lots of things like these.

100_0736.jpg

100_0728.jpg

And I took this for a little spin, 69 charger with about 800 ponies. 10 second street legal car. :D

100_0584.jpg

And here is the link to the rest of them if you are interested. http://s866.photobucket.com/albums/ab228/kcherry62/Emmett Cruise Night 2011/?start=all Some of the pics are not the greatest, wife talked me into leaving good camera at the hotel and then the little camera died on us about half way through the night when all the really cool cars were coming out.

I came home and first day back I worked on putting up a canopy to put the boat under when I get it back in the driveway. Had to chase down parts and between that and putting the canopy up it took most of the day. Second day was spent cleaning the garage, man was it ever a mess. Had way to much stuff in there and still do but at least I can walk around and get to the tool boxes. I finished stripping paint on the outside of the hull and got most of the inside done as well. Also added some more epoxy to the transom and also to some of the bow pieces. I still need to get the bottom of the hull and then I am thinking that I am going to do shark hyde like Big Hoss did. Man that boat of his is one sweet looking ride. Things are going just in a slow motion pace it seems like. Am going to try to take some time off from work and just work on the boat for a while, at least that is the plan.

Re: Well I did it now! 67 Islander Rebuild

Well I think that I am back after a few set backs. Had a few issues health wise and then the wife lost her job. Just did not feel like doing much of anything for a little while. Finally decided that working on the Islander would help pull me out of the depression that was setting in with all that has happened. So back at it again, just maybe a little slower than what I was. Here are a couple of pics of what has been going on.

This one is for Ez as he helped rename my thread for me, with my permission.

100_0863.jpg

And the top to it. The trailer made a good place to store it for now.

100_0870.jpg

Jason I did manage to take a few more things off of the old girl as you can see, just had to do it to turn her over.

And has anyone ever seen an Islander go turtle?

100_0868.jpg

I was worried that it would be hard to get off the trailer, it was a piece of cake. Taking the top cap off was also really easy as well, and I moved it by myself. I was worried about flipping it over as there was no support on the sides. So I put in 3 2x4's and then flipped it by myself as well. I can actually move the boat around by myself which really surprised me, especially since I am not as strong as I used to be. So I am going to be stripping the bottom paint off tomorrow. And hopefully my Sharkhide will be here in the next couple of days so that I can start to polish it up. I will get the bottom done and then put her back on the trailer.
