Re: Well I did it now! 67 Islander Rebuild

How off-level are we talking here? Would it be possible to raise the tongue up on a cinderblock or something to make it level? The goal here is to get some water in it to identify any loose or missing rivets so you can deal with them prior to Gluviting. It would be better to "mechanically" repair the issues then rely on just the Gluvit to fix them.

To give you an idea, when I pressure washed it I had my floor jack under it with 2 4x4's on it and raised as high as it would go to just barely drain the water out. Oh and I had the jack about 3 feet back from the tounge of the trailer as well trying to get enough height. Not going to do that again, as I raised it I did put some jack stands under the trailer just in case. Well when I was lowering it, I moved the jack stands and looked at the jack just in time to see the trailer slipping off of the jack:eek:. I managed to roll out from under the trailer just as it fell off of the jack itself. Scared the crap out of me that is for sure, the wife was right there as well and she was not to pleased either:facepalm:. I was very lucky, think that one thing that did help save me was that I have all 4 wheels chaulked so it could not roll at all. So yea, not going to do that again.

But I was thinking the same thing there EZ, that the rivets need to be checked. Just was getting all excited that I had some stuff that I could actually do on the boat. I am going to see if I can park it in front of the neighbors house and just run my hose over there. Need to seal that big hole in the back first though.

Another question here, I am looking at new gauges to install. I am going to go with a fuel gauge, a tach, a temp gauge, oil pressure gauge and then not sure what else I need. Not sure if a volt meter is needed or not and was also wondering if you guys run a tilt gauge as well. These are the style that I am looking at http://www.iboats.com/Eclipse-6-Gau...9686678--**********.588386935--view_id.686329 I think that they are pretty sharp looking and should look good in the boat as well, and besides the admiral likes them as well. What do you all think about these?

Those gauges are nice. Lots of places have them so price around (even BassPro and Cabelas, etc have the eclipse series gauges). And definitely check Great Lakes Skipper as well. GLS has some awesome multi-function gauges if you're looking to save space (which I kinda doubt on your boat).

Not really looking to save space but then you never know. I really liked that multi function gauge that you got, I was thinking of getting that but not sure that I need it as I think that I will have plenty of room. That is unless I do something like install things in the dash instead of gauges, but doubtful. I did see that the eclipse series also have a GPS speedo and that would be cool beans to have.

Re: Well I did it now! 67 Islander Rebuild

Ok, I have ordered 3/4 ply to start my decking and I have a question. I have been looking for rivets to reinstall the deck with and am not having any luck finding some that would be long enough to do the job. I thought I saw someone saying that they were using 1/4" rivets to install thier deck with and I have done a search and cannot find where that was said or where they ordered them from. Has anyone ordered ones this size before to do thier deck? Any help would be great so I can get some ordered.

Also, was wondering how thick of aluminum sheet I should use to patch all those corroded spots in my hull. I am not really sure of what to use that way. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So any ideas on the thickness of the aluminum sheet that I would need to do those patches?

I'd think that just about anything with a spread of 5200 would do the trick for ya (save alum flashing).

Well that is something that I never thought about, was worried that I would need something thicker is all.

My wife told me to cut up some pepsi cans and use those, it would be colorful that is for sure but you would never see it. Oh and she also told me to put a screen door in the bottom of the boat as well, you could see out and the screen would keep the weeds and fishies out as she said. My boss wants me to put a fire pit on the fishing deck or the bow. I get all kinds of ideas thrown at me from odd places, that is why I come here for good advice:D.

Well it was fairly nice Friday and a little nicer on Saturday but I was at freaking work yesterday:(. Today kind of started out nice but turned to the normal Oregon weather, yea crappy. Supposed to be nice come Wednesday (work) and then Thursday as well and then back to the bleak stuff for the weekend. But still will try to do something to the tin can this weekend if possible. Glad you are enjoying the nice weather up there Puget, hope it stays for you bud.

Hey Kelly. I know what you mean about wild ideas..Here's one I had a while back that the screen door idea reminded me of. How about a lexan viewing window in the hull? Have a hinged hatch cover in the deck to protect it when its not being used. Cut something like a 12" square or round hole in the bottom of the hull and screw and 5200 a 1/2" thick piece of poly. ;)

Oh great now I am getting the wild ideas here as well:facepalm:. That would be cool but where I fish all you would see if dirty water:eek:, the Columbia is not the clearest water in the world. And with my luck I would hit something that would just shatter that piece of poly. And then I would have to see if my bilge pumps could do what I am hoping that they will do.

Hi Kelly glad to see your project is coming along. There are sources for aluminum that most have access to. If you have a scrap metal dealer around they are happy to sell you scrap at around 5 bucks a pound or less. You could also check at welding shops for small scrap pieces that they sometimes give for free. Old road signs are another source for scrap metal and can be found at auto wreckers. If my wife were to suggest beer cans I would politely thank her and suggest maybe her frying pan would be a better substitute. LOL.
Good hunting.

Yea GLG, I offered to use her rings for cable guides when she said that. It was not to well taken either :D. Yea I am going on a hunt this weekend for aluminum pieces.

So do you guys think that I need to rivet these pieces to the bottom of the boat or would 5200 be enough? Just got to thinking and drilling a hole in the bottom of my boat scares the crap out of me:eek:. And it would not be just one hole either, there are going to be a few patches from the looks of the corrosion:(.

GLG - that is some forward thinking right there. One less pan in the house to get hammered with, smart!!:D

Kelly - personally, I can't recommend drilling holes in your hull. That 5200 will keep the patch where it needs to be, once cured it won't move.

Yayyyyyyyyyyyyy for Jas for giving me an answer that I really wanted to hear:D. Just cannot fathom drilling new holes in my hull. I can just see it causing leaks and something that I would have a real hard time fixing:facepalm:.
