Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Taking today and tomorrow off of paid work to get some work done on the boat....

JB I got the streaming feed figured out, just not how to write it to a file :(

got things taped off...garage curtained off with plastic sheeting...Admiral has agreed to help me with mixing, cleaning and camera duty while I get the gel put down...

plan to do 3 coats....wax on final coat...I also got some pva to put down afterwards...using mek for thinning...tip is now 3/32" in diameter...borrowed the bosses compressor to add to mine....hoping the added volume helps out...

If you don't count the rookie mistake on the first pot....all went well!

went to spray to get a test pattern and gel was coming out where the air should have been...

felt like a real dummy!

swapped the hoses on the pot...finished spraying...then cleaned it twice to get the gel out of the air line...all good....did 6 sprays of 2 liters each...Admiral was a big help....and she put up with my ranting till the job was done:)

I took video and got a few pics...will post them later tonight...thank you all for the good gel coat karma!

Thanks SP! I ain't all that tall...was a stretch for sure hitting the top on second and third coats...after was all done and said..the far wall got some over spray...Admiral asked what I was gonna do about it...told her I consider them battle scars...they can stay...

and thanks for the Redd Foxx clip..laughed on that one...

Maybe I am a little impatient, wanted to give the PVA 24 hrs but just couldn't help myself when I tried putting a dent with thumbnail and got nothing, starting wpiing her down...all the pva is off now...trying to edit the video...32GB! going to take a long time...just finished copying to the HD....

Think it is too soon to start sanding?

Decided to go ahead and get started on the sanding...

made some dye to smear on first...

smeared on on with a tissue...less loss I figure...

First pass with 100 grit...

remind me again..sand till I get how many % of the dye gone before moving to next grit?

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Sorry, brother...I can't help with the %, but from here it looks like you are ready for the next grit...

My theory on grits is to use the most aggressive one possible until I Feel I have reached a point of diminishing returns...

In other words, if the coarse grit I am using has cut enough material that the next grit still has some material left to cut, but won't break through the area I am working on, yet will continue to smooth down to an acceptable finish...then its on to the next grit, and so on...

Honestly, it is really hard to put into words what I mean...I suppose after sanding for so many years, it becomes almost instinctive, as to where to stop with a certain grit and move on to the next finer grit...

It really is a lot harder on a boat to "guess-timate" the point where you are about to break through, because, unlike a car body, boats tend to have a much "Wavier" [ wavier - Definition of wavier ] surface...

I would guess that it might be better, in some cases to hand sand without a backing board, to achieve a smooth, glass-like finish on a boat by just sanding the areas that need more attention, rather than trying to "Block Sand" everything flat and true, and running the risk of hitting a high spot and breaking through...

Geez, I hope some of that makes sense because I am confused...

oh boy..I think I get what your saying...I have been going on the assumption that I can sand till the dye is gone then move on...but I can see what you are saying, that leaves nothing for the next step...moving on....

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

I have just about had it with the gel coat....80 grit by hand to knock the high spots down..the. Went to 320 on the 1/3rd sheet sander...i ran out of 220...spent maybe 5 mintues on an area 12" x 24"... Angling as as went i stead of flat on the surface...got it down to where I could just barely feel the pits....switch to 400....a few seconds into angling the spots..and burn through...wth? Someone please tell me how to sand this before I cut it into little pieces..and yes I am paraphrasing Pink Floyd...starting to consider 80 grit to knock all the highspots down and spraying again...

I have laready smeared the dye all over the hull...would I need to remove that before respray if that is the route I need to go?

I should also mention I am sanding dry....
