Thanks for the nice comment....I dream about this boat in my sleep....and drive my wife nuts talking to her about it! Going to take top cap off tomorrow....have designed a plan to do it by myself....cannot wait to show the updates.

do you know if that is what is normally used....or what is "normal" on the rear to seal cap on at the transom?

Most transoms are just glassed in and the cap is sealed with silicone or 3M4200..... Dont know whats up with the bondo filler

I went back & watched the 1st & 2nd vid, it didn't look like the transom had separated so much to allow the bondo to be added into the void where you found it. W/ the damage to the starboard rubrail corner, I think you mentioned that it was maybe a hard hit on a dock or something, I suspect that w/out the motor on the boat, someone ran that corner into something while it was on the trailer. I think the motor would be in the way of a dock hit doing enough damage to cause the rubrail damage & a possible hole/crack in the transom. A hit from behind from a jetski maybe if it happened w/ the motor installed. When you removed the rubrail & 'broke' the cap free, did you get the impression that it had been removed once before?

No matter, if it is bondo, or maybe Seacast w/out the cat hair fibers (that was my first thought when you grabbed that pink chunk), I wouldn't be surprised to find evidence of a previous transom & glass repair, once you get the cap 100% removed, and the transom wood taken out.

Best of luck & be careful trying to remove the cap solo. It's been done, most don't enjoy it. Lots of oh carp moments to avoid.

But we nutjobs boat resto guys love to conquer a good challenge.

Be safe, watch for stress on the cap, and I hope it goes 'oh carp' free. Look forward to the cap off pix!

I GOT THE CAP OFF!!!! ok...I am a little excited to make that milestone. Everything went almost perfect with my plan. I did have to take and unhook it from my van and pull it out by hand...so no big deal.

If your going to add length to the transom wood, make sure there's nothing in the cap that will interfere with making the transom wings 3/4-1.5" thicker. I'd check on the weight of that 4cycle motor you're considering. I think there's a big weight jump 2cycle to 4cycle. The hp calcs may be different too, an older 150hp 2 cycle maybe more like a 120-130hp 4 cycle motor which would save you some weight & fuel consumption.....

Great job on taking the cap off drama free! Under the watchful eye of the admiral too I noticed. Weird, all that pink body filler. Its odd for sure. Maybe they faired the transom wood to make if uniformly thick or to 'correct' a little twist/warp of the plywood assembly.

I'm not seeing the glass smoothness & etc that you pointed out above the trailer bunks. Photobucket some fairly close & large pix. Someone else may pickup on it in the vid.

Great progress!

Good job on the cap removal. I noticed the 2x4 joists you have running across are bowing pretty good. They should be standing on edge for more strenght. Guess it's just the framer in me talking. Post up some pics on the area in question like jb said......cant see it well in the video

Ok....will get some good photos today. Oh and to be honest my Mariner 150 is not a 2.0L it has a 2.4L with a 150 front half. As far as the weight of the motor it weighs in at 439lbs.

Yeah they were bowing some....I didnt take a pic, but after I shot that video I added the cross brace front and rear from the ground up to the middle and took care of the bowing.

Good stuff.
Did they lay a extra roll of thick glass over the trailer rails or did they do the whole hull? Can't see from the video

You might want to take the cap out later and tip over to check for damage or upgrades.

Great job on the project so far. I too have an old Bayliner waiting to be grinded on and glassed. Thanks for posting the helpful vids.

Nice job on the demo! Yes those 2 tools are a must for that job..... one more important one (besides the must have saftey equipment) is the angle grinder with a diamond blade (for cutting glass) and assorted heavy grit discs. Lots of grinding ahead....

Oh yeah Rick, already have the angle grinder and diamond blade out and ready! I am just not sure I am ready for it yet. Went back out this eve for a couple hrs and got about half the bow area out....Man, does the foam ever end???? Under both consoles what two huge mounds of foam!!!

Yep...already checked and need some glass and wood replaced on the front consoles. Going to try to add in a CD player holder/mount out of glass...we will see.

Re: 93 Bayliner 1800 Capri Outboard Restoration Project

Man....I put an abrasive cut-off wheel on my grinder and had over half the boat cut down to within an 1/8 of in inch or less in less than an hour. I thought man this is the ticket! Anyone see where this is going?? Lol.....yep you guessed it ....put a nice little cut through the hull! Allow me to give a piece of advice....make sure you put the T handle on the grinder for support. I was up close to the side wall on the floor, and caught a piece of left over wood and it jerked it forward....the rest is history! I know it is an easy fix....it is just one more thing to add to the list. I still say it is the best tool for cutting fiberglass like butter.

Have you tried a rubber backup disc with 24 grit resin coated discs? They make glass disappear really quick!!!

Got some more done last night. Trying to get all of the front stringer and bulk heads out. Man, the front is glassed in really well! It sure makes a difference when the wood is not rotten.
