Re: 93 Bayliner 1800 Capri Outboard Restoration Project
I went back & watched the 1st & 2nd vid, it didn't look like the transom had separated so much to allow the bondo to be added into the void where you found it. W/ the damage to the starboard rubrail corner, I think you mentioned that it was maybe a hard hit on a dock or something, I suspect that w/out the motor on the boat, someone ran that corner into something while it was on the trailer. I think the motor would be in the way of a dock hit doing enough damage to cause the rubrail damage & a possible hole/crack in the transom. A hit from behind from a jetski maybe if it happened w/ the motor installed. When you removed the rubrail & 'broke' the cap free, did you get the impression that it had been removed once before?
No matter, if it is bondo, or maybe Seacast w/out the cat hair fibers (that was my first thought when you grabbed that pink chunk), I wouldn't be surprised to find evidence of a previous transom & glass repair, once you get the cap 100% removed, and the transom wood taken out.
Best of luck & be careful trying to remove the cap solo. It's been done, most don't enjoy it. Lots of oh carp moments to avoid.
But we nutjobs boat resto guys love to conquer a good challenge.
Be safe, watch for stress on the cap, and I hope it goes 'oh carp' free. Look forward to the cap off pix!
