Got a '75 merc 65 on a 16ft. ebbtide with manual trim. Is it feasible to think about adding power trim and if so, what is involved in that process?

Re: Adding Power Trim

I just added one to mine today I can post you pics if you're interested. I'm sure it's not the only option but it's one for sure! Seems to me there are at least 2 OEM setups, and possibly some after market ones as well.

I switched out the one on the right with the one on the left. Aside from the swivel & brackets, the rest of the mount is entirely different.

So is that something you have to piece together or is it pretty much a unit? Is it something you would have to hunt for (craigslist, ebay)?

Re: Adding Power Trim

Cool. So has anyone here run manual trim. I have only run run once in my boat and had it trimmed up way too much. I had to have the kids move to the front of the boat. Is it possible to change the trim while your in the boat or do you pretty much have to get wet to change it. May seem like a dumb question but I was just curious as I haven't actually tried it yet.

if you dont want to bother with all the rusty bolts and trying to get parts from other motors, at the same finished price a cmc trim bracket i got one it sets your engine back a few inches and makes for better performance and the trim is only 4 blots to the transom and then your 4 bolts from the bracket to the engine and your done all the wiring and trim switch comes in the package. very ez

A little pricey but it's a very cool idea. Especially if, as you say, it becomes difficult to find all the parts for your particular boat. Definately an option.

thanks for the tip.

I used manual trim on a 40HP for 2 years and it was actually not difficult to change at all once I got the technique down, even from inside the boat. I'm not sure I would hold the same opinion with a much larger motor though.especially the ones with heavy shock dampers.

That's what I was curious about. I have a 65. Just wondering how you do it whilst in the boat.

Re: Adding Power Trim

I have a 79 115. I found on Ebay someone selling the two cylinders and pump. Kinda expensive But I wanted it. Was $350. I removed the cylinders on my motor and replaced with the ones I bought. Wasn't to hard though i did have to pull the motor in order to install the new cylinders. Just had to lift and hold for a few minutes. Really happy i did it. Was getting hard to do myself and I have the added advantage to trim the motor at speed. Really helped with WOT speed and planing speeds not having to just put the pin in and running at the same tilt all the time. Different loads require different trim angles for optimum performance. The same old trim system works on a lot of the same old motors regardless of HP.

George, I am not sure if the PTT from the inline 4 and 6s will fit his motor. I suspect the transom clamp is different. If it is compatable, it is an easy install. Remove the shocks, install the trim cylinder brackets. They bolt to the upper shock mount. Install the trim cylinders. Connect the hydraulic lines and install the pum in the boat. Connect the electric and bleed the unit.

The unit I installed on my 115 came from a mariner 4 cyn 45hp and it fit and works fine. Though that may have been just luck i don't know where the compatability starts and ends.

Cut the engine, lift it up by hand, and change the trim. It will have tilt locks to hold it up. If I was exposing my back to a lot of that, I'd make dam sure the tilt tube was working well!

Re: Adding Power Trim

definatly look for a PTT with engine clamp/mount with it,should be an easy replacment.other way you will have to drill 3/8 holes in your existing engine mount to hold rams together.you can check boat wreckers/yards.make sure unit is in working condition as it will be costly do replace the parts,or do not pay more than 100$ for the the whole system if in doubt.CMC PTT would look cool for sure.Starting point to manual trim is a second hole from transom.i woud not even think changing it on the go.

Re: Adding Power Trim

Looking at the manual you posted, it appears there are two different models. 40 - 70hp and then 80+. Thats a nice document. Where were you able to find such a thing?

Re: Adding Power Trim

I don't know what year the 45hp was. I got the unit on Ebay. The seller told me it would work and it did. I didn't get the motor swivel, just the rams and the trim pump unit that goes inside the boat with 4 hoses and a long trim switch with wiring harness. Good luck finding everything for $100, I looked for a long time to get mine for $350

"do not pay more than 100$ for the the whole system if in doubt".i think 80 hp + have bigger rams.look around whats on the market.keep in mind that those units are 30+ years old.documents came from another post bout 50 hp ,while I was researching the topic
