---observation---
topics or threads about religion and or politics can destroy "e-board" freindships and relationships

seen this on another outdoor sports board where well respected, longtime members booted from board due to "overheating"

debate and discussion are hugely valuable--but

Hey Guys, This was not supposed to turn into a braw. I expected outrage that the Catholic church was paying of victims for what was done by their priest. In this Case (I think Ralph would agree) the Church should maybe not only have paid but should have removed the offending culprits. And they still are doing diddly about trying to make sure it does not happen again.

I certainly was not tring to start a Christian v. Catholic debate there is enough hipocracy to go around on both sides. And are we not trying to accomplish the same thing?

Re: And now this!!

jgregory Right on Brother! I've lived in Boston my whole life. The whole scandal makes me sick to my stomach and has even made me think seriously about leaving the church - it all depends how things go over the next year or so. If the church does not clean house, take full responsibility and put safe gaurds in to prevent such things from happening in the future I will very likely worship elsewhere.

That said, to say that the Catholic Church was "closely associated" with the Third Reich based on a Renisance Priest is to say the Catholic Church partiicpated in or condoned the murder of 6 million people. That is just pure garbage. I hold the jewish people in the highest possible regard. The highest. To tell me my church was complicit in one of the worst attrocities in history against my dearest friends is way too much to take. For the record, I have never once heard any antisemetic talk come from the church and, my mother was in the convent to become a Nun. She left just before her vows due to a family emergency. Now here is a person steeped in catholic teachings and she is not the slightest bit antisemetic. Finally, my son is part jewish :D

MY - Right on too! I should have known better. I really thought him to be better than that. I misjudged badly. I was surprised to say the least.

Re: And now this!!

I have tried to avoid some of these threads here recently, but after reading through this one, I just had to comment.

SoulWinner, you are wayyyyyy out of line. To bash someones religion, then claim to be someone who has guided people to the Lord is just ridiculous. "His Majesty's Secret Service".......thats a very good name,.......you really should keep your hatred for other religions SECRET.

BTW, I attend a Methodist Church, which just really means I don't know what the heck I believe :D , ......now, I am just kidding.

And one more thing, you will not win an argument with 'ol Ralph. ;)

Ralph,

"I feel your Pain." (Sorry :( ) Without trying to step to far off the topic.

Soulwinner, You are out of line While the Catholic Church did not take a proactive approach to stopping the atrocities in the 1930's NEITHER DID ANY OTHER COUNTRY. All Nations are guilty of being an Ostrich.

The Catholic Church's Philosophy was that at the time Hitler was the lesser of the evil than Stalin was. Stalin was a Direct threat to Catholism. However, once word started spreading (skeptically at first, who would believe of a Nation killing off millions of its own people) the Catholic Church and Individual priest at great personal risk offered sanctuary and activly smuggled Jews out of Germany and occupied territory with many losing their lives.

The Catholic Church appoligized for not taking a more proactive approach in dealing with Hitler early on.

I have finished with my $.02.

Again this was not about religion but about policy in dealing with these monsters. And on this point the Church is Guilty of not doing more to combat and prevent these atrocities from happening.

Re: And now this!!

Ralph,

I quote a hate filled, misguided, uniformed sad little man:
"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Desiderius Erasmus, an ordained Roman Catholic Priest and one of the leading figures durin the Renaissance once stated,"If to hate the Jews is to be a good Christian, we are all good Christians." Wow, sounds like the beginnings to a cozy relationship between the Third Reich and the Roman Coatholic Church to me.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So a priest during the Renaissance is proof of a "close association with the Thrid Reich?" Are you ok? Next time you want to fight with me bring your brain!

There have been antisemetic christians of all creeds since the beginning. I guess by your perveted logic, every christian was closely associated with the Third Reich. Since you quoted the White Paper Policy of England, I guess that makes the ANglican chirch closely associated with the Third Reich too. Soul Winner indeed! You should change your name to BrainSeeker Skipper of the Truly Clueless. If you're winning souls I have to wonder for whom."

Just like PW and mellwoyellow, you don't the ammunition to argue this, so, like the "intellectually lazy" folks PW accuses us of being, you resort to HIS tactics of name calling and personal attack. You are so sad and immature.

Fact: after writing Mien Kampf, he a public testimony the "I am now as before a Catholic and will always remain so." Quoted from John Toland, "Adolf Hitler" (Ney York: Doubleday & Company, 1978) Pg.326.

Fact: Hitler signed the Concordant of Collabotation with the Vatican.

Fact: My beginning with anti-semetic attitudes and statements in the RCC dating to the earliest peiriodes of the church was to start at the beginning and show the anti-semetic fountadtion to support my original statement. It is a common and time honored methode of debate.

Fact: The Vatican is in Italy. Itally was a ally of Germany. If for no other reason than politcal self preservation, it isn't hard to connect the dots here.

:You started this Ralph when you called me lying biggot and challenged me. Now you lost. Get over it and stop with the name calling. You know who the lieing hater is here. It's you, a sad poor loser.

All you little doggies can bark all you want, and when you think you wanna bite, try using facts, or actually responding to the text of my post with something other than personal attack and childishness. Niether PW or mellowyellow ever could respond to the facts I presented in my arguments to them, I wonder why.

Re: And now this!!

Thanks guys, you've got it right. This self proclaimed Man of God and good Christian has shown his true colors. Careful though 'ol SW has but bullseyes on you now :p :D

Hey SW, you good humble Christian you, I conceed. You win. Feel better now?

You know what's ironic? For somebody out to "save souls" you have far and away alienated, insulted and attacked more people on this board that anyone else I know. Even 'ol PW does not come close to your record. No wonder the secularists are out to destroy the Christian Right in this country.

Hey SW if I say I am a Methodist does that make me one? How about a Baptist? An Episcopalean? A Catholic? A jew? A Muslim? Just what religon simply accepts such self-declarations without walking the walk? Oh I know, wait, the Church of SW. That't it, from now on I an an SW-an. Woo, I feel better now. I have seen the light. I've been saved. My souls has been won. Now I love everyone who looks just like me (but nobody else).

Re: And now this!!

Im sure Ralph is going to chime in here but I can't let some of this go.

SW: Yes the Vatican is in Italy, However The Vatican is it's own country. And was Neutral during WWII there was even a line painted on the road around the Holy city to set up a border.

2. Hitler was very shrewed politically, He knew that he could not get the church against him early on. He lied to everybody else do you really upheld the treaty obligations with the Church.

3. Every religion has its faults but lets keep this in modern times. Dragging up the crusades does not prove any point other than you know history. S**t at that point they thought the World was Flat. Basing current events on ignorant fear mongers proves nothing.

3. Finally we need to get away from the finger pointing and name calling. It works both ways I'll bet a dime to a dollar that todays KKK or white supremecy groups are not made up of a bunch of bored Catholics. Can you say Ignorant White Protestants.

Everybody just kiss and make up.

Re: And now this!!

JG, I have to tell you I am just way beyond wanting to respond to such idiotic, weak justification for a hate filled statement. I knew what it was the minute I saw it and just sought to draw him out and show him for what he truly is. Mission accomplished IMHO. It saddens me at the same time though, I honestly thought he was somebody else.
