Re: Are there too many conservatives on this forum?

I find that article to be pretty factual based on other research. Look up some oil company profit sheets for the past several years if you need any proof. As far as everybody quitting their jobs, that pretty unrealistic. People have to support their families. Besides whether you like your job or not has no bearing on whether you are going to get fired to fatten the bottom line before the quarterly earnings are released. Ask a few manufacturing workers who have had their jobs outsourced to save a few pennies per unit. Bushes own commerce secretary was even quoted as saying outsourcing was a good idea.

As you can see from the above, Exxon Mobil has under performed the S&P 500 for the last year. If profits are so great in the oil industry, why is Exxon so cheap compared to the largest 500 companies in the US?

You have to look at how a stock does in relation to the market. The share price of a company is irrelevant otherwise. The price has to do with the number of shares outstanding and the market value of the company (total value).

You look at the % gain in investment over time. If you had taken that same $65 and invested it in a share of the S&P 500 index you would do better with less risk than if you had invested it in Chevron. Therefore, it is a bad investment.

Sources: Bloomberg News, Reuters

In acquiring Texaco, San Francisco-based Chevron could achieve $1.2 billion in savings, including 4,000 expected layoffs, the executives said

Exxon Mobil’s CEO Lee Raymond announced the elimination of 16,000 jobs, representing 15% of the company’s workforce. Over the last two decades, Exxon Mobil has led the oil industry in layoffs, eliminating 238,000 of the 361,000 worldwide jobs Exxon and Mobil had in 1982;

Ashland Incorporated has announced it will eliminate about 500 jobs in a cost-cutting move meant to boost profits.

The cutbacks follow the reduction of about 200 jobs earlier in the year. A company spokesman says hourly employees deployed in the field are not involved in the job cuts.

The combined 700 job losses represent about seven percent of Ashland's salaried employees.

So in your world companies should keep employees they don't need so they can become non-competitive, go out of business and everybody loses their job? Is that what you want? When you are spending too much do you cutback or do you keep spending yourself into bankruptcy?

Like it or not, we are living in a global economy. If a company is inefficient it gets put out of business.

No operating ineffeciencies always need to be adjusted. It's more the way companies go about them with no regard for the impact on the peoples lives. And I would bet, but of course can't prove that the company management didn't suffer in their wallets while they layed off al those people. I merely wonder why when an employee needs to be layed off that they can't be given a reasonable amount of time and severance in order to let them transition to another job. Call it a token of appreciation for the time they dedicated. We obviously have different viewpoints on this issue. I appreciate your expressing your side in a civil manner. These threads often get way to heated which is why I try to avoid them. Take care.

Many, many do just that. Some don't. Those that don't have a hard time getting good people.

Hey, Mojokim.

When you go shopping, do you buy a lot of stuff you don't need? Do you do it with money you don't have??

Why the heck not? Do you have no feeling for the families that depend on selling you stuff for a living?

Do you look for the best value for your buck, or do you buy from stores and merchants that charge you three or four times as much??

Why, for crying out loud?? Don't you realize that your selfish penny pinching is going to put those poor other guys on the street?

I'll bet all the liberals who are whining about increased productivity and outsourcing putting some folks on the street are just as hypocritical as that.
