I will join Smoke on this, although I cannot specify my reasoning why, because it is of a religious nature. However, I will offer that my "religion" does not allow me to believe in hocus-pocus, magic or superstitions. Enuf said! ;)

Re: bad luck?

I've changed the name of every boat I have ever owned. Aside from the breakdowns, fires, sinkings, electrical problems, pirates, and locusts....never a problem! :D

Change it...make it your boat!

You could do like I saw one guys boat. He painted a line through the old name, put his initials by it and then put the new name underneath it. I LMAO when I saw that :D

Re: bad luck?

If they are just vinyl stickers... a hair dryer helps pretty good. Then, finish off the residue with some goof off, acetone, alcohol, or something similar. I would then buff the area, since there will probably be some fading of the gel coat. Goodluck!

Re: bad luck?

If it's paint, then chemical strippers (water soluable), followed by wet sanding and then buffing.

If it's vinyl, go with a hot sunny day or a heat gun to soften the plastic. Should peel off pretty easily. If not, a 3M Magic Decal Eraser wheel in a drill works great and won't gum up or destroy the finish. If there is any fading on the gelcoat around the old lettering, lightly buff with 3M microfine polishing compound and a foam pad on a high speed buffer. Wax after.

Re: bad luck?

There are boaters, people that merely own a boat and then there are die hard Boatmen. The latter fly pennants, burgees and flags and adhere strictly to the laws of Poseidon.

Now, its all in good fun you know. Any excuse to have a party is a good excuse. Most of us don't believe in superstition, but we do it anyway! Follow the rules....name on paper, burn paper and spread the ashes in the water.

Haven't had a virgin on board in years, so can't comment on that!!!

Unless you are an honorable Shellback(such as I)who has been PROPERLY initiated to the "Order of the Deep" and have stood before him and his court at sea to answer to the grievous charges associated with being nothing but a landlubbing, scallywagging pollywog...King Neptune and Davey Jones are never pleased when christened names are changed.

Soooo...

As such, I will offer my services free of charge, oh...but there IS the little matter of travel/food/lodging of course!

Let me know!

Re: bad luck?

You guys and all your crazy methods for removing decals and vinyl have never used what the pro's use. It's called a decal eraser. They're a round rubber disk about 1/2" thick with a drill mandrel on it. Chuck it up in a drill motor and start erasing those decals right off. The spent rubber is easily swept up too. I get mine at my local automotive paint store.

As for changing the name, superstition say's don't but last time my boat drifted away I called and called and called and it never came back.. Obviously it didn't know it's name so I don't think theres much to the superstition.

Re: bad luck?

far as I know "smoke on the water" is fog.... something more to it?

From the song: "Smoke on the water, a fire in the sky!" I always thought it was in reference to the song. My bad for being wrong. The thought was still way funny and ironic. :D
