Battery Trivia Question??????

Is there such a thing as a Group 27 Marine Starting Battery (Starting not Deep Cycle)??? So far NAPA and WestMarine both tell me one does not exist...

yes there are, trojan, interstate. many more. there is now a combo starting/deepcycle batteries. of course they are more. go to a battery store, west marine going to carry the most expensive. walmart even has good ones.

Thanks,, I went to NAPA and they called their technical support for batteries and said there wasn't such a battery. Just called Westmarine and they also said there were no series 27 marine starting batteries.. I figured there must be someone who made one.. I've heard of these new deep cycle / marine starting combo type of battery. Anyone have any info on how well they crank/hold a charge?????? Thanks for the help..

Even my local farm store has them. They are also available in a group 31.

Just went to advance auto and they can't even order me one in a marine starting.. Everyone has them in deep cycle..

buy a starting battery, does not have to be marine, put it in the plastic box, and you are good to go. in batteries, marine starting is another way to charge more.

Yup I totally agree with you on that one. I have a regular marine starting group 24 now, I think i'll go to walmart or costco and pick up two regular auto group 27's, it's that bigger is better mentality.. THanks..

Great,, I already have hold downs installed for the group 27's.. It's the ones that sit in a tray and has a top that bolts down on it. I don't leave the batteries in the boat and the boxes are a pain to work with.. Thanks..

I have 2-group 27 installed so they do exist. I?m using AC Delcos but I know Boaters World carries Exides in the 27 size. The Exides are dual purpose and the Delcos are deep cycle.

I?ve had no problems with either one starting a 200 hp Evinrude

A group 27 deep cycle should have no problem starting any normal marine engine. Maybe would have trouble with a very large deisel. I would go to Cosco or Walmart.

West Marine does have them but you get a better deal above.
Below is data from West Marine site
Group 27 dual purpose battery with 745 marine cranking amps. That would start a 500 cubic inch motor with no problem.

I could not find batteries here at Iboats.

You need to watch yourself battery sizes when dealing with the newer computerized motors. Mercury specifies a minimum of 1000 cranking amps or 850CCA for the Optimax. Some of the others may have similar needs.

Dingbat is correct about the OptiMax. I can not imagine why but he is correct.


The V-6 Carb/EFI model up to 250 HP only need 630 Marine Cramking Amps but the OptiMax calls for 1000 Marine Cranking Amps.

V-6 Carb/EFI Models
135/200 & 225/250 630 Marine Cranking Amps (MCA) or 490 Cold Cranking Amps (CCA)

2.5L/3.0L 1000 Marine Cranking Amps (MCA) or 750 Cold Cranking AMPS (CCA)

Thanks for all the info. After calling around BoatersWorld is the only place I found that carried the series 27 and it's the dual purpose for $109 in the Exide. Thanks for all the help.
