I have a 2000 4.s gl with a Volvo Pinta Stern drive and on my first outing since wintization (10 min trip)) I had major water in oil problems. It even looks like I blew a core plug (freeze plug) I had the breather lines coming of of the Port side of the exhaust manafold blowing the water/oil into the carb and the most puzzing thing was the " leak around rubber core plug, water and hot milky water was leaking from a "3/8 blow out plug (?)" around the starter, on the star board side of the engine block just aft of the drain plug. I an guessing a exhaust gasket has blown on the port side and filled up the oil pan with water. Is it possible the pressure built up in the oil pan and blew out freeze/core plug. Am I correct a gasket caused this and Is it possible to repair the plug with out taking engine out. Of course I will need to take if the exhaust manifold could there be other problems?

If it blew out core plugs then you have more than a gasket problem in my opinion...
Freeze damage..

Who winterized it? a shop or yourself?

I have done the winterizations for the last 4 years. I used the OM manual and didn't see any problems when I did the 3-5 leak test at idle befor going for the short boat trip. Befor we conclude it is a craked engine is their anything else I can check. to confirm your answers

what is this 3-5 leak test? The "rubber" core plug is wrong ,their brass.
If it`s coming out the breather tubes you have a lot of water mixing with the oil. This is not a gasket issue. something was missed during winterization.

yep... you didn't get all the water out. The 4.3s cooling system had about 4 gallons in it.
You didn't happen to use 1 of those systems that puts in antifreeze through the muffs did you?

I did a 3-5 min/ leak test, with muffsand no leaks were noted. I am guesing the leak did not start because the engine never got hot enough but is ther a chance that water was pumped into the oil through a bad gasket or oil cooler and this caused the what I think is a core plug to blow? The core plug in question is just above the starter and aft of the drain plug.

Not sure what your full model number is, but did you drain the intake manifold?

could not find the intake manifold drain (weather is not to good here today) I was hoping for a little good news today, I new that my problem was bad and that it looked like a winterization problem I was just hoping I did'nt have to buy a new engine (or boat) My record of winterizations has been pretty good (4 years) so I was praying you guys might have had some checks befor the big $$ was spent.

You might want to go up to the Adults Only sticky at the top of this forum. Have a look at the winterizing threads and evaluate how you have been doing your winterization. Obviously, whatever you did, didn't work very well.

Short of pressurizing the blocks cooling system, I don't know what else you could do. If you weren't getting water in the cylinders, a compression test isn't going to tell you anything. If you have a LOT of water in the engine, pull the intake off and look, you will probably see the crack just above the lifters, or maybe even the intake. With core plugs missing too, I would guess there was still water in the block for some reason.

Re: Big mess On my first day out this season

I want to be sure it was a "core Plug" What I see is a small hole (3/8") the hole is about the size of the drain plug but with no threads. It is on the main engine blick just above the oil pan between the starter and the drain plug. when I first saw the leak It was spaying water and oil a few inches out so I felt around it a diloged a piece of rubber (drained out 8-10 gallon of water/oil). Is this a core plug? Is their only one way the oil pan would get water in it, like from a cracked block?

Took me a bit, but now I know what it is. That is were a dipstick could be located on a car or truck or a different setup that what you have. Your dipstick is attached to the pan,
The hole is usually plugged with a plastic cap just pushed in there as there isn't any pressure in the pan to cause a problem. But, since you have a cracked block or intake (Sorry, but it's true) that is where so much water and oil found a way to escape.
I have used bolts with sealer on them to plug the holes after rebuilds.
That hole is not a problem, just a way for you milkyshake to get out of the pan.
