I went out to my shop tonight where my boat is parked and started to remove a couple of cardboard boxes that were setting in it. This one small box had a used tube of sealant and an old horn in it but it ALSO HAD SOMETHING ELSE. Perched on top of the black horn was A BIG OLE BLACK WIDOW SPIDER........I quickly grabbed a handy can of starting fluid and sprayed it to death. No more spring cleaning tonight, I want much better light.....LOL At least it wasnt a big ole copperhead snake that we have here too....More things than boaters come out in the spring.

NASTY!!!!!!!!!

i am terrified of spiders......arachniphobia ...or however you spell it.

we have black widows all over around my place....and copperheads.....and scorpians ...............i live on the side of a somewhat rocky mountain.

if a spider gets on me i will freak out and jump around swatting at it........screaming like a big girl the whole time . snakes and everything else dont bother me..catch them with my hands all the time...but spiders........just gives me chills thinking about it.

good luck with the spring cleaning....i use my boat all year so not as many spiders :p. the ones i do find go swimming til they get ate by the fishes :D:D

Re: Big nasty spider

I have only seen one black widow and that was in our storage shed in Long Beach. Luckily for us, she built her web right at the door casing. That's when I found out that normal bug spray don't affect them.

Here in Missouri we mainly have brown recluses. Also very nasty. Friends of our had their house reroofed and they had dozens of them buggars in no time. Apparently, they were in the attic and the heat (roof changed from wood shakes to composition) drove them out. The exterminator had them leave for a week, fogged the house, and still had bait traps catching them for weeks.

Spiders freak me out, cant stand them. Ya, I know they eat bugs and that, blah, blah, blah but I'd just prefer em' all dead. Fortunately Wisconsin winter kills most of them off so they cant get big like they do down south.

We have big hairy spiders that crunch when you step on them.

that's exactly what I was going to say-- not many poisonous critters up here. I guess we have some Massassauga rattlers here in Michigan but I've never seen one. Maybe a brown recluse or two, I'm not sure about those.

Re: Big nasty spider

For some weird reason spiders don't freak me out. I realize that the browns and widows can give a nasty bite and lead to infections and skin necrosis but I'm not "scared" of spiders.

Snakes, now that's a different story. I once had a little snake the size of a pencil in my water meter hole and had to ask my neighbor to get it out of there. Brrrrrrrrrrrrr. I HATE SNAKES!!!!

I don't mind spiders and snakes as long as I see them over there somewhere. I grew up on a farm and we had plenty of all the varmits including 24 in rats, tail and all in the hay loft. They all bother me when they appear out of nowhere.

A spider that not many of you know about is the brown widow. Google that sucker.....we found 4 of them on the houseboat and one on a swing at my parents camp. A spider expert whom I spoke with told me they are worse than a brown recluse or black widow.

This was a nice article to find....I live in Louisiana!

Re: Big nasty spider

I like spiders. They kill house bugs and they look neat. In No Cal we have black widows and wolf spiders, but that is it. The wolf spiders here may not be as big as other regions.

Just like snakes, I not going to say that I do not have a cautious respect for them though.

I dont know about that i have seen some pretty big spiders in my cottage. not sure what kind they are but they get big. woke up one night about 3 in the morning something crawling on my neck. i just reached up to brush it off and it seemed to fill my hand, i am not usually scared of spiders but this one freaked me out! i ended up throwing it and it landed in a box i got up and looked at it. HUGE!! i woke my wife up ( figured if I was done sleeping she should be too) she just looked at it and said yeah kill it and go back to sleep. I killed it but i didnt sleep much more that night.

yall just keep them lil boogers over there in louisiana!!!!!!

i saw your pics and i dont like'em one bit

i guess they arent as aggressive as black widows?!....since it says they are less likely to bite humans..............i have come across a few b/w that sprawled out on their back and attacked ,latched onto the stick, when i poked at them

how did they come about?......probably a cross between a recluse and a widow since the venom is more potent

Re: Big nasty spider

Up until six months ago I used to work for a land developer. We would mark boundary lines on wetlands so the US Army corps of engineers could verify we were not encroching protected areas. These wetlands are nasty stinky swamps. I have been bit four times by banana spiders (not the brazilian type, I think some people call them garden spiders). These spiders are huge. I have driven a guy to the er because he was bit by a water moccosin snake. I have been to the er because 50 bees stung my neck and face. I have also been covered in leaches after crossing some neck high waters. These waters also have alligaters. Despite all this I like all critters.

Mike:

I don't know about metro Detroit way, but out here in the sticks, I've run afoul of a rather nasty customer a couple of times. I've been bitten twice over the years by a small spider that's the color of dried snot. Lord, does its bite pack a wallop! The "venom", or whatever it was, raised a welt that was about the size of a quarter and killed off all the skin about an inch out from the welt and at least two layers deep. That took a LONG time to heal! Whenever I see any spider of that color, I kill it immediately. No questions asked. No mercy, no quarter, no arguments, no jury, no appeals.
