Re: Big problem? Little problem?

What else but the throttle forward is there? Also if I spin the probe clock wise there is a click and it dont go in reverse. Does this sound right.

Ayuh,... That sounds more like the edge of neutral, insteada bein' in Forward...
The prop should click 1 way, 'n lock the other...

Look up from below, 'n see if the shift foot/ shoe is straight fore, 'n aft....

If that's all, alright, I'd have to guess the gimbel bearing is rusted to the shaft,...
But it wouldn't normally move in, 'n out easily...

Well it does lock in reverse direction and click the other way. It originally wouldn't budge till I pried it real good. But now its stuck and wont go further. But it will go in. Is there a easy way to remove it now. I have seen people say to reinstall trim cyl.and push it off. That kinda makes me worry about something breaking.

Re: Big problem? Little problem?

OK! Pulled trim cyl. Drained oil. Disconnected speed cable. Removed 6 Nuts holding out drive. Raised and dropped a few times with no luck Finally had to pry apart. Now the problem. It came a part about 5/8 inch but no farther. Pried wiggled and every thing else. Seems some thing towards the top is holding it. Now this is my first time but seems to me the only thing could cause this would be corrosion on the drive connection. The case moves freely just won't come farther apart. Don't want to screw the cases up by prying harder. So at this point any one have an idea. Or know the problem? I'm sure this is nothing new and there is a way.

Fairly new at this myself (having changed the impeller once in my alpha-1 by far does not make me an expert!)...but I am confused why you disconnected your speed cable? Are you following the steps in your manual to the letter? Also....have you looked inside the boat to see if there is anything hanging up at the gimbal bearing between the bearing and engine coupler?

Yes I am. I would think you cant see between the motor to see the gimbal or shaft. I have seen a lot of people talking about either the gimble bearing freezing on shaft or the spline sticking on motor. Hoping not but looking like it to me. I have seen they recommend using trim to push off, pulling with a truck or ATV or prying or beating the hell out of it. I really don't like these but starting to wonder about the trim cyl. and pushing.

Ok would you recommend putting something in the gap I have to level it out before pushing? Guess Im going to have to rig some thing to hold it when I push too,

Ayuh,.... a 2x4 across the top, wedges in pretty good...

Hopefully, you've unseated it, 'n it's better than 1/2 way outa the bearing race...
If it's rusted into the bearin'...

Well she is out! took a 2x4 and a 1" piece of wood on top and pushed her out. It came out really slow and tight. Good news is it looks like the spline was corroded. Bearing stayed in and turns good and easy by hand. See im going to need a gasket, o'ring for looks like a water tube and a seal around the whole the drive goes in.Does this come in a set if so whats it called. Also have i missed any in this surface?

And an alignment bar, and some spline grease, and a brush to clean the old dead grease out of the coupler. I take it the drive hasn't been off in many years?

Re: Big problem? Little problem?

Well according to the guy I bought her from. He said it's been two years. But got to say I think he may of been stroking me! Thats why I had to get it off when I found it stuck. I now dont know what to believe and what not to. So need to check it all out my self. Now do i really need an alignment bar? I figured on the brush and grease. I have a tube of quick silver all purpose I figured i 'd put on it when it goes back. Do I have to buy a special bar for that or is there a way to check with out it. May be a dumb question but Had to ask.

NEVER believe a seller, they only tell you what they think you want to hear. It's been on for more that 2 years if it took that much to get it off. Closer to 5 or 6.

You need an alignment bar, look in the stickies at the top of this forum

Oh I believe you! Do you know by any chance what size the drain plug is and the threads. Looks like 5/16-16 threads to me. But it's been a while since working with those things. I need to find a fitting for my pressure gauge. Not sure what uses that size. Also hopefully i can borrow a bar from someone. Hate to pay out 40.00-50.00 right now. Got to much going into this now. And to much more to do. LOL

Re: Big problem? Little problem?

I got a new bar off ebay couple of weeks ago for 28 bucks plus some freight. I had done the gimble and bellows and it seemd that the drive slide right in, no need for the alignment tool....but all the posts and comments got me nervous, fear of a coupler failure with a boat full of people came to mind, so I broke over ordered it, checked and....nope not good! Wasn't 20 minutes and I had her slippin' in smooth and silky, can't bring myself to do things half way on the boat, the voices of Don and all the other Sages haunt me into being good!
Keep it up boys!

Re: Big problem? Little problem?

Yes I know what you mean. lake Erie is no place to have a boat broke down. Been there and done it. I always try to do things the best I can while still weighing in on price. It will be aligned before going back together. The bare is around twenty something and shipping about the same. Its seals and gaskets i'm concerned about. Seems I need the mounting gasket. Also there is a 3-4 inch seal that goes in there. Also need a water pump kit but don't know if I order the lower gasket, seal kit if it all comes but the impeller. Also not sure if i'll need the upper gasket set. So decisions decisions, LOL

Viper1: You really need to get the manuals for your engine and your drive. There are numerous links to free downloads from various sites, including 4shared.com. There's not much that's really complicated about the required maintenance, but it must be done correctly or you will be stranded on the water someday. Your drive is probably going to need new seals. You also need to check the bellows carefully for wear or cracks. Forget everything the previous owner has told you; it's obviously not quite truthful. Good luck. Hy

Sorry Little book worm if I annoyed you with my questions. As I already stated in earlier posts . I have the Selok and the merc cruise Books already. I have read every article I can find on the internet. I was a mechanic for 20+ years and a machinist, die maker for 20+ also.. But like a lot of others you still ask experienced people for there recommendations. I have the mounting gaskets, the upper seal kit and lower seal kit, the water pump kit and the alignment shaft coming. All is ordered and most has shipped. Now why in the world would I buy all if not to use? The Bellows and such I will check and see. Now with out asking questions and just reading the books and things I wouldn't have bought all. Just what was needed. I have narrowed it down to three areas that can cause this. And I'll try not being so chatty or needy from now on.

Re: Big problem? Little problem?

Viper1, FYI I was having the same problem with my drive having a hellauva time coming off yesterday and I was following your posts and questions which helped me finally get mine off today and it looked like my spline was the culprit also. I don't think it has been removed in probably 8 or so years. Thanks a lot!

Re: Big problem? Little problem?

Viper1...please continue to be chatty... I learn from both the questions and the answers! And pictures always help.. I would expect that you (as I did) will have several "technique" questions come up during your repairs. I look forward to reading them, and the answers that come of them. I also hope you get your boat in the water and it runs great for you! Sooner the better! I love boating.
