Re: boat insurance

Regarding not having it: that's pretty un-responsible and if you can't afford the few hundred dollars a year, well, wait until you can afford it then buy a boat.

Sorry, already bought the boat. I can't even afford the fuel much less insurance.

Re: boat insurance

I had State Farm but switched to Boat US. My logic is that they understand boats and the other companies do not. I have never had a claim with any carrier but think Boat US understands our pride and joy best. They also have a magazine they send out to members with safety tips and details of actual claims and how they could have been prevented. I read these cover to cover and alway find value in them. Insurance is not just about price, you want a solid company that will be there for you when you need them.

You should at least have liability insurance. If you can't afford liability insurance, you probably can't afford to own a boat. Its relatively inexpensive.

See Home Cookin's post #14 on why you still need to have liability.

I have had USAA for as long as I have owned a boat but as others have mentioned, they may not write new coverage.

So what was your point in even asking about insurance since you had no interest in wanting to insure it?

Maybe just hoping you'd find someone else on IBOATS that would admit they don't insure their boat also?

USAA now uses progressive. No discount for USAA members and non USAA members.

Re: boat insurance

My boat and its contents are insured through my home insurance policy. I have an addition to the policy which provides me with a $1M liability floater that covers my boat, house, bicycles, and additional on my car for public liability. That was the best way to get the liability coverage on my boat and get my car up to a better level. That's in Canada but I'm quite sure you could get it anywhere. (except maybe Somalia)

while some homeowner's in USA covr boats, you have to read the policy very carefully about what they define as a boat. Sometimes, too, to get your boat covered you have to list it; it's not automatic. You have to read your own policy as they are all different.

Re: boat insurance

My CIO (Cheif Insurance Officer) (a.k.a. Admiral) informed me that our 'new' boat is now covered under our "umbrella policy". The previous boat was not, because of the type of boat it was, but she got the insurance company to include the 33 footer because it is more of a 'cruiser' than a GFBL.

Re: boat insurance

I just took a look at all my insurance needs last week. Everything. Homeowners, auto and motorcycle insurance. Progressive was not being kind to me even though I have a spotless record so I finally found an agent with State Farm that took the time to look at my situation. I ended up saving so much on all my other insurance that I included boat insurance. For some reason I never had boat insurance. I don't have a good reason, just never got around to it. Well, I got a different boat a few months ago and I also moved to a much more congested area. I moved from a podunk little town in Oregon where there were a lot of lakes and no people so I was typically the only person on the lake. Now that I'm here in the Phoenix area, I got insurance.
I have an 18 foot aluminum walleye boat with a 90 hp on the back. I got full coverage, liability, uninsured/underinsured, theft, etc. and I got all that for $103.00 per year. Sounds good to me.

Even if you don't have assets, who wants a judgement to pay following them forever in the event of an accident without liability insurance? Seriously, you only live once and why would a person want to live like that? The shortsightedness just makes me scratch my head. Now if you have a few nickels to rub together, why would you want to lose what you worked so hard for when someone else is lining up to take that risk on for you for practically nothing (ie rate-on-line).

So, the 'other guy' gets to cover his injuries through HIS policy if YOU cause an accident? Just making sure I've got this right, so please correct me if I'm wrong...

There are always a few of these guys that post when one of these insurance threads get going. I am sure he isn't the only one on iboats that has this "attitude". God help anyone who gets into an accident with one of these flakes.

they ought to make the selfish uninsured paint their boats (and cars) bright orange so we can avoid them. And they might be the exception to the "help out a stranded boater" policy most of us have.

Re: boat insurance

I would look at an umbrella policy, the maximum you can afford, with a deductible that is in your price range. What Home Cookin' said is true. Civil suits drag anyone involved, who was in the area, into the accident. They use preponderance of evidence (51%) to win the suit; a lower level than criminal court which is as everyone knows "beyond a reasonable doubt." They drag on for years and cause a lot of stress.

Hopefully handchops was joking. If not, at least his inability to afford fuel might keep him off the water.

Re: boat insurance

I may have already said this, but if you get umbrella insurance, be absolutely sure you have the required amount of underlying insurance. if there is a gap, the umbrella is no good.

They're supposed to look at all your limits and increase them as necessary before underwriting the umbrella policy, at least that's what they did with mine. It was bit of an eye opener actually.
