Hey guys, newbie here. I bought a boat from a friend of mine for $100 with the intentions of restoring it to usable condition and getting a few years out of it. I already knew the floor was rotten and figured the stringers would need to be replaced. Boy was I right, you can see the skeleton of the stringers but the wood has turned into wet cardboard :D The transom feels pretty solid and its my guess that it has been replaced already. I'll probably drill a hole into it to see if the wood is soggy or dry. I figured it would be easier to work on the boat with the cap off so I have been working on separating it for the past day. This is the "shoebox" type. I drilled out all the rivets and the cap wants to come off except near the transom. I'm guessing its glassed into place. I'll try to get a picture of the inside of the transom tomorrow. I couldn't really see a place to cut the fiberglass near the transom so I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions. After looking at the bow with the cap lifted off I'm not convinced that the cam really needs to be removed in the first place. My lack of knowledge led me to believe the stringers went all the way to the front which they do not. Heres a few pictures of the boat. It needs EVERYTHING but I wanted something to kill some time with and don't expect the boat to be ready this year. I figured I'd start this thread and ask questions here along the way.
Thanks guys,
Aaron

Re: Bought a new project! :)

Popping the cap is a nice way to get access to everything, I elected not to on my glasser restoration, I just cut the cap in front of the transom about 2-3 feet up. I was able to get at all my stringeres and transom, now I just need to glass the back part back in. My cap was glued and glassed to the transom in the back, it's a good bet yours is too. I ended up using a saws-all to seperate that cap from the transom, I will need to do some glass work around the back of my splash tray, but nothing bad. Looks like you are 90% finished on the removing the cap, may just want to continue, it will be easier to do any other repairs that come up.
So what kind of power was on the back of this one?

It didnt come with a motor but the tag says you can put up to an 85 hp motor on it. I have the cap off now and the floor out. The stringers were completely gone. I'm having a hard time figuring out how tall to make the new ones. For example the middle stringer has to be taller than the other 2 because it sits lower in the boat. I'm not very good at making the measurments.

I'm kinda new to this to, but here's how I plan to attack the stringer height issue: The previous owner had installed a second deck about 1.5 inches above the level of the original deck. Luckily, there are still remnants of the glass that was on top of the original deck. Once I get all the stringer locations ground out I plan to lay a length of 1-by across the bottom where the original deck was. Then I'll measure the height of each stringer from the hull to the bottom of the 1-by. Then all I have to do is subtract the thickness of the deck, and I've got the stringer height.

Aaron. Please go to Completed Boat Restoration form. and look at the
[h=3]1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration[/h]or click the link above lol. Friscoboater has a camera face which is fun to watch! he did a really nice job, and he used the knowledge of his previous restore and help from everyone here on Iboats. We will help you do it. I unfortunately am only a learner... but one day!!!

To get your stringer height you pull a stringline from one side of the hull to the other at the height of the bottom of the previous deck. then drop a plumb line down to the hull. do this at 6" intervals and you'll have your stringer dimensions. The first link in my signature below has drawings and info on how to fabricate and install your Stringers, Deck and Transom
