I'm a little concerned about a post I just read about someone carrying a gun while they are boating. And I'm just curious as to how many of you guy's carry a gun while boating. I'm not refering to when you are hunting but just recreational boating and why you would have the need for one or two. I'm just trying to figure out why you need one. Could it be because you are afraid of pirates

( I heard they will make you walk the plank) or is it because you have spotted a wounded Force outboard that just needs to be put out of its mysery.

Is there really a need that I'm overlooking or are there lakes and coastal waters out there that are really dangerous.

Howdy, Trollhole.

When I fished alone offshore in the Gulf Stream in the early 80s I took a short shotgun with me. There was a lot of piracy at the time.

It was a pain in the butt tearing down, cleaning and relubing the gun after every trip.

I haven't carried a gun aboard since then. :)

I saw that same post someplace and it struck me as odd also. Thats what we need, armed boaters. I guess we don't have to worry about those folks on PWCs because the can't take thier hands off the handlebars long enought to take a shot at you. However, they may speed things up at the boat ramp and cut down on the fresh water shark populatiuon.

This country was built by armed people. Up through the 60's, people were not so afraid of guns. Since I grew up in those days, I'm still not. Am afraid of being caught out in the wilderness with no means of protection from bear or human. BTW, I don't carry one but glad I still have that right.

Only when I go offshore.

You're at the mercy of a lot of dangerous forces out there, human and otherwise.

Just to clarify my question. I'm not asking about your right to own a gun (we have already had a long drawn out post on that one!) but just as to why you need to have one on a boat.

Hey it's my 100th post! Think I'll change from  to :D

I have a concealed carry permit and see no reason to leave it at the car.

I especially like to have it on hand when boat camping.

It's just like a tool box, if you have it, you won't have to use it.

Djohns, we carry weapons here for a couple reasons. Not human ones, although we don't have some of the issues that other people do. If we are on a river system and fishing, we tend to gravitate toward where the fish are. Senor Grizzley also knows these places and actively seek them out as well. The choice of defense is always to leave the bear his favorite fishing hole, but sometimes he forgets that rule and won't wait for you to pack up. We also camp in the same areas, so camp defense is an issue.

Secondary carry reason here is saltwater fishing routinely results in a + 80 lb or bigger halibut who objects to you bringing her aboard. Without a convincing argument, or a shot between the eyes, it can result in the fish doing damage to your vessel or to people in the boat.

Very few pirates here, but some onery critters.

Kev_Alask***

Re: bye bye Boats and Guns???????

Well guys,Thanks for all the advertising. Now Im very popular..Im the one who admits that always carry a gun (Desert Eagle .357Mag when Im boating or shooting and .40S&W or the traditional 9mm when Im working). As i hint in the other post I carry a gun ´cause im an Agent and also because I have the righ and skill to carry one. Also many people out there have permits to carry a concealed weapon, they´re on their own right like many other people.
If I have a gun it doesnt mean that im going to shoot you just ´cause you go 70+mph and im only at 35. NO WAY!!!
BUT : Figure that youre going 70+mph in a narrow channel and then another small boat is coming and you hit the side of that small boat. Then the guy with the SMALL boat takes his BIG COLT ANACONDA and shoots you SIX heavy, hot and powerfull HP bullets right to your back ..70+mph were not fast enought for a bullet, Right?.
How to avoid this?..simple: make conscience and NEVER SPEED IN CROWDED AREAS OR NARROW CHANNELS.
Have or carry a gun is a right, like the right to own a boat or car; but some people carry a gun with the intention of use it against the first guy that incite them. So be smart, be gentle, be courteous, enjoy your boat, family and loved ones, speed your boat any time you can or want, but NEVER IN CROWDED AREAS OR NARROW CHANNELS......Right?....Sorry for the example, peace ;)

I am usually fishing alone. Do I carry a gun? Absolutely!!The real world is a dangerous place today. However please do get the training required to feel comfortable carrying. Everyone should have a concealed carry permit. Remember a gun is a tool. It is not a toy. Freedom also means accepting responsibility for your actions.

Interesting topic. In Canada our gun laws are so strick that it is very difficult to carry and store a firearm. It certainly is a safe feeling to live in a country where firearms and badguys aren't much of an issue. Some food for thought. PS we also have government subsidized healthcare!

Government health insurance: administered with the compassion of the IRS, the efficiency of the Postal Service, and all at Pentagon prices.

Cast-Away,

I must be a great feeling to know that you live in a country where ONLY the bad guys have the guns.

By the way, how dead do you have to be to get an inflamed apendix removed?

Capt. Bob,

There are two issues here, whether or not Silverking is a Yahoo, and whether or not citizens should arm themselves at the lake. A few years ago a nut drove his pickup into a family restaraunt in Texas and waded through the place shooting people. People in the place had left their guns in their cars and were helpless as families were slaughtered.
