Have a great one! We'll be in the 'general Temple Bar Basin area' depending on the water level. It's going up about a foot a week so some of the beaches are changing dramatically - and some even disappearing. We may end up going downstream to Havasu to stay the day with some friends for the festivities and coming back on the 5th for the remainder of the week.

Thanks you have a great 4th of july too, and be careful, lots of bad drivers out there.I have never been to the lake on the 4th before.

I would say Glen Canyon continues to meter it out . . . If left to nature, Mead would be nearing full pool. Take a look at how fast Powell is filling. Has been a foot a day, down to .7ish

Yea, obviously Powell's on the leading edge of nature's outpouring so they're keeping their ace in the pocket still so to speak. That's a cool site. Hard to fathom that many acre feet of water coming in to Powell daily. Makes me wonder if the water amount predictions from the snow pack were as accurate as they would have us believe..

Thanks...and actually the 4th is pretty much like any other day on the lake unless it falls around a weekend, then it's like any other summertime holiday on the lake... The smell of BBQ's in the air, a few decorations set up on the beach, boats, and back at the trailer, and no fireworks.

Interesting side note . . . They used to have a forum. I posted there a little. They shut it completely down due to continued nasty infighting among members. There were a few Powell "experts" who ruined it and the site owner basically gave up. Done.

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

thanks!

Anyone headed to Mead over the 4th?

Maybe if I can shake my wifes company coming in. I'm ready to spend some evenings/night/mornings there this time of the year. I usually don't know until the day comes.

I've never navigated a moving river before. Would it be tricky with many hazards? I guess I would need more fuel coming back against current.

Floating hazards would depend on the river and the time of year. Think of a river as one moving surface, or plane. With the exception of narrow points and eddys it's very easy to negotiate if you have even a little boating experience. The current will be faster in the narrow sections, and the eddys just give you a little turbulence but no big deal. It's important to watch for color, rocks and other boaters and pwc's especially around blind corners. If the river is crystal clear, it's pretty easy to spot underwater hazards. If not you really have to be on the lookout. The only maneuvering that could really tricky is getting to the shore, taking into account the current which moves along at a pretty good clip in some parts where it's narrower. If you want to beach, it's easier to beach your boat going upstream so you can come in at whatever speed the river is moving and 0 mph land speed. As far as fuel consumption, yes you will use more fuel obviously going up river depending on the speed of the current.

That's a bummer, but I can sure imagine that one forum devoted to Powell enthusiasts would most certainly invite all the 'experts' you could imagine, lol. I bet it had to be at least a little entertaining watching from the sidelines though. It must have really gotten out of control big time for the owner to just throw in the towel on the whole project. Wow

I remember it being an argument between the water-data forum and wayneswords, but don't recall exactly.

For hyper correctness fans the world over, it's Katherine Landing. I don't know why there is no apostrophe and s, but there isn't. I guess it's named after "Katherine", but it's not hers . . .

Yeah, jax, the best thing on Mohave is Cottonwood up, but there are some nice dunes and beaches near Katherine. It is the main hangout for those from Laughlin, so it can be VERY crowded around there. You need to see it, but knowing a little about you and what you like, I am not confident you will like it there much.

i might have to look at a map of mohave. i went to a maria that is the farthest north and on the west shore.
we turned east at search light and drove in from there. it was winter but it seems nice and quiet. was looking at may be temple but this was closer.
i wouldn't be surprised to find i have the wrong name

ok, just looked up on a map and i was wrong. (please dont make me walk the plank or flog me)

cottonwood resort is the marina i am interested in.

Flaming Gorge should do the trick! I've been at Temple Bar all week and it's just what
i needed to take the edge off. What a great week! I'll probably post some pics in a couple of days after I get home.

Hope you have a great trip :)
