I have a larger and older version of the Powershot. I'm actually a Nikon shooter, but I bought it as a "carry around" camera.
Mine also uses AAs (four) and it eats batteries rapidly, too. One of the things that you may not have noticed on that review, however, is that you can lessen the problem by allowing the LED to "sleep." Another aspect of the Powershot series, is that they use the same CMOS processors that the DSLR Canons do - they are very good processors. The "glass" on these cameras is also quite good. I guess my point is that they have some drawbacks, but they are very good cameras, for what they are.
This photo was taken with my Powershot S2 IS, which is only a 5 megapixel camera, but has the DIGIC II processor, which is what Canon used to use in its EOS DSLR line
