Does anyone have one? Interested in the battery consumption as well as it's other attributes. It is one of the smallest cameras that still uses AA batts, which I like.

It is modestly priced as well. I am considering it as a gift for my daughter.

Re: Cannon A1100 IS?

I have the Canon 540, which is very similar to the 1100. It eats batteries like no ones business. I thought about trying the 1100 to see if it was any better, but after reading many reviews and seeing the battery problem still exists, I am going to pass. I also liked the idea of using double AA's (which is one of the main reasons I bought the 540 and before that, it's predecessor the 520) as most others have gone to the rechargeable lithium's. I also like having the viewfinder which most have done away with. But having to carry batteries every time you use it gets old. Great camera if they'd just fix the battery hog problem..

That's a shame. I have a Fuji 5000S that uses 4 AA's. They last for ever and a year. (well almost) It is a bigger camera and only 3.1 mp but it has 10x optical zoom. You cannot miss with this camera but it is too big to be convenient.

A friend of mine has one and it does use up batteries but he discovered by swapping the batteries around when it gets low adds life ...he was guessing one battery draws more than the other

I also have a Fuji, the S700, that uses 4 AA's and they also last forever. Plus it takes great pics and has been a wonderful camera. But like you say, too big for convenience sometimes. I'm really thinking about getting the Fuji Finepix J38. I was over at Best Buy the other day looking at it and it seems to have the same quality as the larger ones. The flash is super quick to recycle (another problem with the Canon) and the focus is fast. If the pics are anywhere near as a good as my S700, it would be a good buy. Seems well built, with a large screen and comfortable. But it does have the rechargable battery. Might just have to sacrifice to get a good camera..

Re: Cannon A1100 IS?

looks like a pretty decent camera rickd. If it shares it's qualities with it's bigger sibblings, it should be good.

The Mrs already ordered a camera from Costco. It is a Kodak M380. It is pretty small, uses a lithium Ion batt but you have to charge it in the camera. A plus side is that it has 5x digital. I was thinking of sending it back in favor of the Canon but now I won't. I'll check out the Fuji a little further.

One of things that gripes me is that some cameras list their size in MM's while others only do it in inches. Pretty hard to compare, in that respect, if you don't speak metric well.

That Kodak looks like a good one too. Let me know how it works out. I was hoping to hold off until after Christmas to buy another. Might be some deals then..

Why would you want one that uses AA batteries? The battery packs that come with the Canon cameras like the SD Elph series will outlast a pocket full of AA's and only need about 90 minutes to fully charge. I have an SD 630 that I have use at least several times a week. The battery only needs charged about once a month. If being on the go and having your battery go dead is an issue, just buy a spare battery pack. They are not expensive. The SD camera line is also modestly priced now, too.

Re: Cannon A1100 IS?

I have a larger and older version of the Powershot. I'm actually a Nikon shooter, but I bought it as a "carry around" camera.

Mine also uses AAs (four) and it eats batteries rapidly, too. One of the things that you may not have noticed on that review, however, is that you can lessen the problem by allowing the LED to "sleep." Another aspect of the Powershot series, is that they use the same CMOS processors that the DSLR Canons do - they are very good processors. The "glass" on these cameras is also quite good. I guess my point is that they have some drawbacks, but they are very good cameras, for what they are.

This photo was taken with my Powershot S2 IS, which is only a 5 megapixel camera, but has the DIGIC II processor, which is what Canon used to use in its EOS DSLR line

I also like the Nikons but I am still in the 950/990 Coolpix class.I still shoot film and use Voigtlanders for that.I did not read that link yet on battery life but it seems that the proprietary rechargeables have much better life than the AAs do.I just bought a set of the Sanyo Eneloops to try,I have about a dozen AA rechargeables,2600 ma/h and they only hold a charge for a few days whether you are using them or not.Ron G

Re: Cannon A1100 IS?

I tried Energizer rechargeable AAs & didn't like them. The Powershot will use them up in a fraction of the time that a set of Duracells will last. I's love to find some rechargeables that last a decent amount of time!

Yep, that's been my experience. I quit messing with them. They would die right on the shelf. The (what I think are pretty new) Eveready lithium AA's are pretty cool. They claim they last up to 8 times longer in digital cameras and have 15 year shelf life. They are also half the weight of normal alkaline AA'a.

They cost about $1.50 each, though.

Are they silver, black & green? 2500 mAh? If so, that's what I was using & didn't have much luck with them.

Re: Cannon A1100 IS?

Have a look at the Eneloop website.http://sanyo.com/eneloop/
I am not a wealthy man but I cannot live with the rechargeables that I have been using and I cannot afford to buy batteries for all my cameras either.
I have been reading about these for a while now and ordered up a set of 4 a week or so ago. They cost around $12.00 more or less +shipping on the bay,we'll see how they do for me.Shelf life is a year or more.Ron G

Re: Cannon A1100 IS?

I have a Canon SD1100 IS with a rechargeable battery and it lasts seemingly forever. One of my better selections.

A couple of other things to consider:
1. Get a large capacity SD card in case she would like to use the movie mode. The one with the camera could be used as a back up.
2. Get an inexpensive SD card/USB cartridge to download the pictures. Mine is made by A Data unit that is smaller than an old box of matches.
