Married 30 years. I can guarantee that in the end you'll pay a lot more than you charged her!

Like some of the people have already said, people that do no own boats sometimes do not realize how much gas they use. I will some times mention that it took a little over $200.00 to fill this and that will usually last the week-end. I don't charge friends that go on my boat but depending on what we are doing. IE. if they want to ski or tube a lot I will except money if they offer. If they just ride along with us and do the things we would normally do I will not except the money if offered. BUT I guess you know your true friends if they offer.

I don't think I'll complain any more when I spend $50.00 to fill my tank with premium after seeing that... LOL

My little 4 Cyclinder may not be fast, but, I can run around off and on all day and only use a 1/2 tank of gas and I like it that way... ;)

I never charge for gas but I don't refuse cash when offered. The people I usually take also have never failed to invite over for dinner when they see I am alone.

I always offer gas money when I go out in someone else's boat.

There's the winner. I too ALWAYS offer gas money to the boater when not on my boat. My expectations are to get the offer from those on my boat. Won't always take it....but the offer is the gesture I'm looking for.

What will sail boat owner expect from friends if he invites them for a ride?

My rule for any such situation is - if they offer it, decline. It's polite. If they offer it again, I take it. :)

But I never ask for it unless I'm going to need it for the ride home!

When you call up your friends to see if they want to go out to dinner, is it assumed that your paying because you invited them?

I never thought of it this way. Around here, you call up people to go out for a bite and it's never assumed that the caller is footing the bill; everyone pays their own way. But to me, it doesn't seem right to expect someone to pay for gas if you invite them boating. Guess it's sutational, like tipping. You tip your server in a restaurant, but you don't typically tip the kid at wal-mart.

I just bought a boat yesterday and have only been a guest up until now. I was with a friend when he got gas and offered some $ for the day. He declined and gave me the story about burning the gas anyway. Another time, same friend, mentioned they were going to a certain beach and we should come out. We did, found them at the boat launch and I hopped in and did some skiing. I didn't offer a dime and still feel bad about it.

Being a new boat owner I'm not sure how I'll handle this. I don't think I'll ask for "helping out" unless a buddy asks me to go fishing with my boat. If I invite people I may suggest that they bring some snacks and bevvies. If they want to throw in a few bucks for gas, I'll likely take it and let them know it's very much appreciated.

To me, the bottom line is the offer...that's all I expect. That is polite. "can I chip in for gas?" "maybe next time" is usually how I respond. The only exception is with my fishing club. Once a month, we pair boaters and non boaters. The club has a policy, $30 to the boater from the non-boater. I've gone as a non-boater way more often, and have no problems forking over $30.

On a fishing forum I use, this topic gets brought up every once in awhile, to varying degree's of opinions. I've heard some say "half the cost includes gas, oil, insurance, launch and towing to launch gas" which to me, is waaaay beyond half the costs. Insurance?? What does one do, break down the yearly bill for insurance by day's on water and charge half of that for that day?

I do the same. I offered my friends dad $50 when going out on his, twin diesels and I know it cost him to run it for a day. He was shocked I offered, probably cause he's a multi-millionaire, but he was gracious I offered. He took the money, but I have a suspicious feeling he was letting me win in poker later to give it back, plus some.
