Clogged speedo tube

I have a clogged speedo tube...I have read that I need to blow it out towards the gear case with air and that I should clean the hole with a 1/16 drill bit.

It has not worked thus far and it has been clogged since I have owned the boat (8 years) but I want to get it working.

What can I do?

The drill bit barely goes in, less than 1/32 and I see some metal. I then took a small pick tool and dug all the dirt out and it looks like the metal is laying horizontal but I can stick the pick in above and below a little. Should that metal be there?

I have tried sticking a #12 wire down the tube without much luck.

Should I spray anything down the tube or can I tear the lower unit off and get better access?

Please let me know any bright ideas as I would like to get this working.

Thanks!!!

Re: Clogged speedo tube

Ok I figured it out...the metal is a broken drill bit about the size of the hole.

Any sugestions on how I get that out?

I wish I knew who broke it off in there so I could send them a nice thank you note!!

That is a very common mistake that happens sometimes you have to take off the lower and pull the speedo outlet out and break the bit off from inside and sometimes you have to redrill a new hole but pay attention to \how long of a bit you use i have seen some people drill all the way through the water cavity into the lower unit where the lube is and that will cause a problem after that the speedo hole has to be welded up and top has to be sealed off

It may rust itself out over time.
