OMG!!! There are definitely parts missing. I can't believe the engine just sitting there inside the fence. Doh!! Hope they're OK :scared:

The motor and the front frame too. There hasn't been any replay of the wreck/finish, just the live wreck. That never seems to bode well and the driver interviews are very somber. I hate Daytona.

One tire and the engine thru the fence, but the other front tire went up, then carried forward, going over the top of the fence and into the stands. Looked like the tire went 75' thru the air. At least one carried out on stretcher.

Yeah, I just saw the tire/wheel flying. Definitely got into the stands at least 15 rows back it looks like to me. Not good.

They're saying 6 spectators are at area hospitals. Unofficially.

Re: Daytona...............

Seems that about 30 spectators injured ... 14 taken to hospital. All in stable condition. Sure could have been a lot worse. Watched some of the video on the internet since I missed the race due to a 3/4 inch water line in one of my rentals blowing apart sometime during the night last night and not found until shortly after noon today! What a mess! Water rolling out the door and walls ... neighbors called me to let me know the property was a lake! OUCH! Anyway, missed the race because of it. Man, the end of the race could have been A LOT WORSE! Definitely ugly.

Re: Daytona...............

The count is 33 now with 2 in critical condition.

NASCAR is trying to block videos shot by fans of the wreck and of the car pieces flying into the grand stands and injuring people... do they think they're going to get sued or something?

In the scheme of promoting this type of racing NASCAR had to know that the inevitable was bound to happen. I like close racing and allowing the fans to see a checkered finish but Talladega and Daytona are not the place for this. I mean every race there ends with a multiple car wreck. I like action packed racing but not pre-staged events like this and that is exactly what nascar is doing.

Re: Daytona...............

We have had plenty of plate racing debates here. This is an accident, and NASCAR is going to protect their business. Why wouldn't they? I am hearing all are stable and no life threatening injuries. Scary, but it doesn't appear to be tragic at this point. If it turns out differently, then we will obviously discuss that. But there is no mega conspiracy here. Cars could get in the stands at any venue. Personal safety is not available even in your own bed. Let's let his thread stick to the race, the facts, and discussion. Not speculation.

Fan video from right where the tire/suspension parts landed is already on yahoo news. It was an accident but hopefully all will be OK. I don't think I should link it. You can find it if you want to.

Re: Daytona...............

I think if anything is going to change it would likely be the amount of cross over gates, ironically where this accident happened is right where one is, the cables in the fence were intact but the fence failed and I have to believe some of that is because of the cross over gate.

Now the wheel looks like it cleared the fence and had most of the suspension still attached to it, I know that the front suspension is cabled to the frame so I would be interested to see if the cable failed or what exactly happened there..

Of course those injured are in my thoughts and prayers, NASCAR's fan base is its business.

That's exactly what I thought and am wondering.

Re: Daytona...............

Haven't seen the race yet. Saw a quick replay on the local news. Since I hear NASCAR didn't show any replays, I'll be rewinding the DVR a few times. Scary stuff.

Pre-staged? Not a real good choice of words. NASCAR doesn't want anything like this to happen. Does the chances "increase" at 'Dega and Daytona? Sure. Can you keep the fans 100% safe? No. Not unless you put the fans way away from the track, then no one will attend. There is a certain amount of risk, even tho it's ever so slight, while attending these events. There's risk going to your local dirt track. How about a baseball game? Getting hit in the head by a ball or a bat? Sure, car parts ups the ante.

As far as speed outgrowing the tracks. They were going 200 plus back in the day. They detune todays cars, otherwise they would be doing well over 200mph. And technology, these cars/tracks are safer than they've ever been. Let's not be so quick to throw NASCAR under the bus........

ps. I've gone to 'Dega for years.

Anyway, just my opinion and I'm not here to argue with anyone......:)

Enjoy today's race. My plow is calling me again. Should be a short day and I can get on the sleds with my daughter later... :thumb:

I just hope the race can be run and finished today. 40% chance of precip but the radar shows it's just overcast now. Race safe boys and girl.

Re: Daytona...............

Whenever we start speculating about the motives or morality of some evil corporation threads go down the tubes. The Carnival thread almost did as well for similar reasons. Just reminding that we should leave it to the race and information regarding safety and the status of anybody injured.

Go #31!!!!
