Re: DEER HUNTERS !!! Got buck fever yet? Maybe we should post pics ?

Saw one doe yesterday ... materialized through the thicket at 10 yards, looking right at me. When I clicked the safe she bolted. I was kicking myself for not drawing the pistol instead, but I was so focused on the rifle and the deer ...

Have to take a friend to the doctor 2 1/2 hour drive from here, so I won't make it to the woods today. Tomorrow is the last day of rifle season. Then I have to wait till after Christmas for the smoke pole season. One day left for the rifle!:(

I saw the biggest coy-dog I have ever seen this morning however...... did not shoot since I did not want to go though the reload routine with the BP rifle.

We had about 4 inches of snow...... coyote tracks, rabbit tracks turkey tracks, mouse tracks, ton's of deer tracks and moose tracks but no animals. OMG it was cold!!!

I went out again this morning. No action today, other than an FWC officer going after some folks who were baiting with corn. That's not allowed on the WMA. No deer taken since last weekend.

Well rifle season is over. Saw 5 doe at about 1000 yards today. That was it. First year in a long time that I was shut out. Maybe I can get a reprieve after Christmas during Muzzleloader season. We will see ... just no deer out there. The PA Game Commission & insurance companies have gotten their wish to get rid of the deer herd. :(

Hi All I have been enjoying reading everyones stories...I myself just finished up w my muzzxleloader season. Ate my buck tag this year. Hunted 7 days ML. Saw 4 bucks 1st day out. None legal. Needed at least 4pts on a side Saw 2 6 pts and2 forks. Then had the snow. Hunted hard but sightings were few and far btwn. Was out every day in the 5 below to 15 above weather, tracks everywhere but deer mostle noctournal. Could hardly step into the woods without the deer bustng out hundreds of yards ahead. Could have used another person to do a few drives. Oh well Got a plump doe in the freezer anyhow...woods were beautiful w the fresh snow just made it home before this last Mn blizzard of 14 to 20 plus inches. Happy Holidays ya'all!!!

Ps Have missed reading up on everyones stories My home comp crashed so am at Ma and dads today to check in with u guys Miss ya'all!

Pauly, I thought we were going to have to put out an APB out for ya...
Was plowing snow today. On the way home I had at least an 8pt stand in the middle of the road looking at me. Had to slow down so I would hit it. A few minutes later I had a fawn in the road with it's back turned to me. Couldn't see it until I was on top of it. Hit the brakes, swerved a little to the other lane(something I never do) missed it. My v-plow probably would have cut it in half. This was all right at dark.

All deer seasons, except for bow, are done as of tonite.

Saturday at dusk rifle season ended. Sunday morning there was a large 8 point that came out of the creek bottom across the road from my house and walked out of the development, crossed the road, and headed to the thicket on the church grounds where I was hunting on Saturday evening! Go figure! They are smart!

The season doesn't end here until 9 Jan 11, but no hunting for me today. It's 43 degrees with 25-35mph winds. Heck, there's a GALE warning in effect over at the WMA!

Supposed to get to 26 tomorrow morning with high winds again. I have an appointment in the morning, so wouldn't be hunting even if the weather was good.

Wednesday it's supposed to be 24 in the morning with 5-10mph winds. That looks like the day I'll hit the woods again.

Starting to feel the pressure here... not much time left!

A few years ago I shot an 8pt on the last afternoon. Never give up.......

My old side hammer has never given me any problems. I bring it in and out of the cold and she fires every time. I just "unloaded" it on a fence post a couple days ago. Now I have to clean it b/4 the corrosion starts. BP is highly corrosive.

This year in WI we can use variable scopes on them. Of course, I have no way to mount one. That would help with zeroing it in and the ability to shoot earlier and later in the day.

Well, I would have to say that from the little or no reporting of deer kills from the iboats hunter membership that the elusive whitetail has won. :)

I think one of the problems of deer hunting, is the deer hunting programs that are on TV today. Most of these programs have hunters hunting out of tree stands over deer food plots or hunting near automatic deer feeders just out of view of the cameras. Majority of today's hunters are hunting from tree stands in areas where the deer ratio to land area is not as great as on TV, nobody puts on deer drives. In northern Maine the deer ratio is about four deer per square mile.

Yeah, it's tough out there, especially on public lands. I still have almost a month left in the season at my WMA (even more in my zone) and haven't given up hope. There's likely going to be another short rut here in a week or so and I'll be in my stand as much as possible... waiting for Bambi. :D

Agreed ... but we drove deer for 2 weeks straight and we came up short ... we averaged 5 hunters per day for 12 days (no Sunday hunting in PA) and we killed 6 deer total. There were very few misses. We just were not seeing deer. The ironic part of this is another gang that hunts the same area we hunt killed 21 buck and 3 doe over the same period of time. There were obviously more of them, but not THAT many more. One drive they did there were 3 drivers and 2 headers and they saw 6 legal buck. I did not see a legal buck all season, and our gang only saw 3 legal buck all season. Go figure!

I'm still hunting!

Spent 3 1/2 hours out there this morning and will go back this afternoon. There's supposedly a "mini-rut" on right now, so I'm still hopeful.

Anybody else still hunting?

Allright ! Still some body out there ! My seasons are done [shotgun, then muzzleloader] Didnt fill my Buck tag, I do have a nice plump farm fed doe in the freezer tho:) All thats open in Mn now is archery. I am not good enough with my bow yet to give the deer the respect it deserves. Ive heard good things about the second, mini rut for those late estrous does. Best of luck to ya !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!;):D

BTW 18 deg here more then a foot of snow on the ground and 6-8 more in on the way in the next 24 hrs. I suppose you are huntn' in sandles and shorts?

I wish!

Actually, it's been unusally cold here and it was 31 degrees when I was out there this morning. Last week it got down to 16 degrees for a couple days. I was pretty chilly then! It did warm up for 48 hours, but a cold front came through yesterday, which should coincide well with the 2nd rut. It's supposed to drop to 30 overnight tonight, when we have the exact full moon.

From what I've read/heard, the 2nd rut is actually caused by this years fawns which come into estrus for the first time. That means fewer does in estrus and a subsequently shorter rut.

But I'll take what I can get!

My season here doesn't end until Jan 9th, but I'm not sure that I'll stick it out for the full term.
