Congrats on the 5 pointer.:)

We always go to camp on a Sunday, I always bring two targets, one for me and one for my friend that rides to camp with me, I bring all the tools needed to tighteen scopes etc: He never sights his riffle and misses a lot of deer.

Thanks flyrod, it was bitter sweet. I had just sighted it in literally days b/4. Once the gun is sighted in NEVER make ANY adjustments until after the season. Unless you drop it or rap it against a tree "by mistake". I did bring my rest and tools "just in case". I never thought I would need them.

ps. I used my dads 742 to bag the 5pt.

I went to the rifle range today to resight after the forestock bolt adjustment in my earlier post. Apparently, that method doesn't work. I can't group them now. It's never shot this bad. Back to the gunshop.

BWR1953 - That's exactly what happened! Except my deer never raised it's head from eating and was able to get 4 shots before it bolted......

I apologize for the fact that there are inconsiderate , stupid, disrespectful, people that call themselves deer hunters. I can very much understand your frustration. But there are alot of us that take the sport of deer hunting very much to heart and despise the type of people you have just described. I have dealt with those types myself and in no way consider them one of us. The group I hunt with pay a hefty sum to lease land to hunt so WE don't have to deal with them either. I fully support causing as much headache as possible for the people that deserve it.
But please remember , its kinda like boaters, there are the inconsiderate slobs on the water that REAL boaters hate, Or drivers on the road.
I think we do a service, the deer population is extreme, they cause crop damage, car accidents etc. And it puts meat in the freezer. But I do feel your pain .

Well said Paul there are nit wits in all walks of life but they don't usually tote guns! it's for this reason I haven't hunted for years let's face it this stupidity starts right at the top let's remember a top Gov. official that will remain nameless. Actually this year I do plan to go deer hunting (muzzle loader) and as the season here in Ct. is segmented into 3 sections 1st Bow 2nd lottery shotgun and then muzzle I don't hold any hope. Oh well a bad day in the woods is better than a good day stuck at work ;)

I thought by now there would be game on the game pole and also thought that there would be a story or two and photos.

Looks like the deer may have the upper hand. :)

As of this afternoon, my tree stand is all stabilized, chained, set up and ready for the season opener tomorrow morning.

It's more like a Forest Penthouse with a great view now!

BWR1953 - Good luck hunting! Looks like you have a real nice setup. Those 2 man stands sure are comfy. Can't beat a ladder stand for ease of getting in and out and for safety. Sure beats the hang-ons....

Nature calling will get you every time! Sounds like we had comparable seasons. How frustrating is that??!!! I guess at least we can say we saw trophies. I'm actually over it now since I have that new Browning. Confidence in the "gun" went back to 100%. WI season starts this Sat. Checked on the stand today and cleaned up a couple of shooting lanes. Saw a bunch of tracks in the fresh snow. Look to be does and fawns.

Ya, the big ones don't get big by being stupid. Although, the one I had was pretty darn dumb. The rut is on....:D

That chicken coop is the fanciest one I've ever seen. That doe looks real nice. Lots of good eatin' there.......

I wonder how BWR1953 did?

Day one, Part 1
Well, today was the first day of general gun season at Chassahowitzka Wildlife Management Area (WMA or Chaz for short) and the season runs until 9 Jan 2011.

The plan was to stay in my tree stand for the entire day, so of course I packed enough food to feed a marching army of starving Cossacks. Heh.

0430 ? got up, ready to start the season. Lunch packed and truck loaded.

0600 ? got settled into my stand in the WMA and it was really nice. Temp was 47 degrees with clear skies and a little patchy fog.

h1d1px1.jpg

Time for coffee!

h1d1px2.jpg

0647 ? sunup

h1d1px3.jpg

h1d1px4.jpg

Much wildlife activity going on from just before sunup until later. Songbirds, squirrels, pileated woodpeckers, hawks, all kinds of activity happening.

Re: DEER HUNTERS !!! Got buck fever yet? Maybe we should post pics ?

Day 1 continued:
0830 ? I heard a gunshot off in my 2 o?clock direction about ? mile away. A few seconds later, another shot. I turned my head in that direction to see if the noise would bump a deer my way. Then a few more seconds passed and still more shots. Then even more. Some in rapid fire. The Hernando Sportsman's Club is located there, but doesn?t open until 0900 and closes at 1500 on the weekends. Hmmm? I figure that the range officers must have been there and putting in their time before opening for business. It took less than thirty seconds before I turned my attention back to the field in front of me.

And when I did, there was a doe and a fawn some 75 yards right in front of me, moving diagonally from my right to my left. Nice! I grabbed my camera and took a couple pix of them as they moved. I was only able to catch the mom though. When they were 141 yards away (ranged with my Bushnell laser rangefinder after they left) I gave a very soft buck grunt call from my Bone Collector Flextone call and the doe stopped and looked in my general direction. Not seeing the buck, a couple seconds later she pressed on across the field. Meanwhile, I was watching intently for a trailing buck that never appeared.

h1d1px5.jpg

h1d1px6.jpg

0843 ? I noticed a tiny bit of motion out of the corner of my eye and spotted a flock of Osceola turkeys feeding under a sand oak tree. More pix! No season for turkeys in Chaz this fall though, which is why I have pix and not a turkey dinner!

h1d1px7.jpg

0900 ? the gun range opened and shots fired? not really too bad, but I did notice that the birds pretty much shut up. A gray squirrel flitted about for awhile.

1000 ? the cacophony from the gun range was becoming annoying. I noticed that no wildlife activity was around me anymore. Everything either left the area or went quiet.

1030 ? I had enough. The noise from the gun range wasn?t just annoying it was interfering with my hunt, so I left the tree stand and headed for the Jeep.

1045 ? I went to a spot in Chaz where I knew there to be some wild boar. I found plenty of very recent pig sign, but no pigs.

1115 ? called it a morning, checked out of Chaz and went to lunch, then home for a few hours.

Day one, Part two
1635 ? back in the tree stand, watching and waiting.

1738 ? sundown

1808 ? day over, headed back toward the gate. No take home prize for me, but still a good day.

1815 ? while checking out at the ranger station, met a 15 y.o. boy who had just shot his very first buck, a nice 135 pound 7 pointer! That?s a GREAT buck for around here. It really made my day to see that young fella with his first deer. The crowd at the checkout station gave the young man ample praise for a job well done and he took it with grace and poise. A fine young gentleman.

14 Nov 10
Day 2

I assisted in a search & rescue effort of a lost hunter and his 7 y.o. son! They were STILL IN CHAZ and being searched for by helicopters, dogs, sheriffs deputies, FWC rangers and other volunteers. They got lost around 1630 and by the time I ran low on fuel and left at 1930, they STILL had not been located!

Didn't see any deer while hunting today but did spook out an armadillo. LOL

15 Nov 10 Monday

Day 3

Got an update on yesterdays lost hunters today. They were eventually found late last night by the helicopter with IR camera. Turns out that they'd entered Chaz by coming in from US 19 and jumping the fence. A big no-no. Couldn't get any other details because the guys working today were not the same ones working last night.

I will say one thing... that whole mess really opened my eyes about the lack of a real emergency plan on getting to a hunter in a hurry. The lost hunter had a cell phone and the LEO crew was able to get a fix on his location via GPS but didn't know exactly where that was in the WMA! They just had all the volunteers AND the LEOs drive all over the WMA in hopes of spotting the hunter's vehicle. Completely random.

Just imagine if he'd had a broken leg or something... he could have died from shock while waiting to be found.

Hunting - I did go out in the morning and again in the afternoon. I was genuinely overtired in the morning though. Forgot some things at home and then when I did get to my stand, I'd left my backpack in the truck. Duh. Sleepy. Anybody else go through that? LOL

Didn't see any game at all. But, in the afternoon, I went to a tree located 98 yards from my stand and soaked the ground and a low branch with some hot doe estrus urine. The check station agents are saying that the rut is at peak right now.

This morning I have appointments, so won't be hunting. Dunno about the afternoon either. My house is a wreck and all my camo needs to be washed. Heh heh.

WMA's are good things for people that have no where else to hunt. I persoanlly dont hunt on public land because I feel it is too dangerous not knowing who you're hunting with and where everyone is. I hunt family land and am a member of a camp that leases land on the MS river inside the levy system.

Things are fast getting to the point where WMA's will be the only place where the average hunter can go. All the private lands are getting bought up, land owners have been taken advantage of to the point where they no longer allow hunting to anyone other than family and timber companies now use hunting leases as a major source of income now and the leases are getting out of reach for the average hunter.

What I've done so far.

Nice pix. I must say, that's the first time I've seen a couple holder in a deer stand. Great idea tho. I have the same stand. Might have to git me one those there holders.....

Too bad you didn't see more deer. Next time....:)

ehenry - Nice buck! I'm assuming that's going on the wall... We have a bunch of paper co. land in the area. All of it is open to the public for hunting. Sometimes they sell off a chunk to a private citizen.

I wish I had the ability to do a lease deal, but it?s just not in the cards right now. And as you say, private lands are drying up or are being forbidden to hunters by the landowners. For me, the WMA is only 10 miles away and all it costs me is gas money to hunt. Once successful, it?ll be much cheaper to bag deer than to buy beef. I already have a freezer full of pork from a prior paid trip farther north from here. And since I?m retired, I have plenty of time to hunt. BTW - Nice buck ya got there!

wimusky
Thanks! And BTW, I got that cup/thermos holder from bass pro shops. However, I just checked their website and that particular product is no longer offered. Bummer! Maybe you could find it elsewhere online though. And as for seeing deer, they?re very sparse where I hunt. Check out the whitetail population density map below. I?m in the west central part of FL, on the Gulf. Deer are less than 15 per square mile or absent altogether. Even at the max of 15 per mile, that?s just one deer on 42 acres. And at 34,000 acres, that means that there are only theoretically about 800 whitetail deer MAXIMUM in the entire WMA. And that includes does & fawns! Pretty slim pickings indeed. The total harvest for all three seasons (archery, BP and general gun) out of my WMA last year was just 67 deer. Patience is essential around here.

Thankyasir! I do what I can with what I gots. LOL

And as expected, I didn?t hunt today. Got home around noon and started house cleanup and laundry? both of which are still ongoing as I type this. LOL

bwr1953 - Sounds like you have some tough hunting. Although, the scenery is beautiful and you're not freezing your nads in the stand. I can't imagine what it's like to gun hunt when it still looks like summer. If I could hunt in a t-shirt, I would be happy. Most guys around here want it below freezing. We still have snow in the trees from a storm that hit over a week ago....

ps. It sounds like my brother shot that buck I missed. Will post pix when I get them...

Either one of these pix would look great as a background on the computer. Just might have to do that to get me thru winter!

Let me know if you want the full sized image. I can PM a link to you.

I did go out hunting again this morning but didn't see anything. I walked around and did some still hunting this morning about 0930 after spending over 3 hours in the tree stand, but saw very few new tracks back in the woods. However, it rained last night and I DID see some fresh tracks on "my" access road. If the deer are using the road at 0300 though, it certainly doesn't help me much! LOL

A couple friends came over to visit me at home this afternoon, so I didn't get back out there this evening.

I'll hit it again in the morning though!

Sure, link me up with that sunrise pic. I have it as my background now. It did blur slightly as it was expanded to fit my screen. I'm guessing a larger pic will limit the slight fuzziness.

Went cruzing around today with a buddy to run some errands. Took some backroads on the way home and saw a very large 6pt in a small field only 100yds from a guys house. He was standing only 40yds from a paved road. It was missing it's brow tines for whatever reason. Definitely would go on the wall. Lots off mass. We were gone about 20 minutes, decided to check back on the deer and it was still there! Only this time, a doe was standing at the ready waiting for the big guy to move in. This guy had zero brains. The rut is still on! Only 3 days until opener......
