Re: DEER HUNTERS !!! Got buck fever yet? Maybe we should post pics ?

I went hunting this morning. Took my 22 y.o. daughter with me. It was pretty quiet until 0715, when we heard the first gunshot. Then it just got more and more frequent. LOTS of gunfire in the woods this morning. Far more than I've heard since the season started. Found out that there were over 100 hunters in the woods this morning. On Monday when I shot my buck, there were only five!

So much for starting a Thanksgiving day tradition of getting up early and going hunting. Next year we'll sleep in late and eat turkey early! LOL! :D

Decided to take my camera yesterday since it was the first day all season the sun was out. 1st pic is off the stand. Notice the lack of "palmetto bushes", BWR. 2nd pic is the only exciting thing I've seen most of the season..

That second one is cool, that is an ermine, we see them quite often up here in Montana, but man they are hard to get pictures of! Good Job!

And they are almost impossible to get a picture of one in Summer Phase:

Actually, he did a 360 around my stand and came in to get a better look at me. He was right below my stand. Don't tell anyone, but when I took the pic, I couldn't see him in the view finder. The way the sun was and the fact he is white, I just pointed and clicked.

As far as Ermin, yeah sure. Everybody calls them weasels around here. Kinda like tomato/tamoto. To be technical, an ermin is a form of a weasel.....:)

Well that is fine, there are a lot of weasels.

I got my degree in wildlife biology after I retired from the military, so I naturally called it an ermine, but I was not trying to say anything bad, sorry. Its still a cool picture they are not easy to photograph...

Happy Thanksgiving...

Nah. The rifle season ends this Sunday nite. Then I can break out the smokepole for Monday morning.for another 10 days. If I want, I can hunt the 4 day doe season that starts the day after muzzleloader. Already decided not to do that hunt since I have one in the freezer. Hope you get a chance to dirty the barrel!

Hey neighbor... I dont quite understand... will u be out again with a rifle or smoke pole ? What do u shoot? I have a Knight Disc 50 cal Not to crazy about it. It is very acurate [ I had about a 5 in -3 shot group about 1 ft off the bulls eye at 200 yds from a bench with fiber optic sights] and waterproof, but kind of a pain to dissassemble and clean..I would like to upgrade , but piggybank is empty.:D

If I get out this weekend, it will be the rifle. Monday starts muzzleloader. I use a T/C White Moutain Carbine. I like it because it's as light as a feather. The barrel to me is to short. At the moment it's accurate only to 75yds. I'm still playing with different rounds. I'm a side hammer guy with loose powder. Old school. No inlines or pellets for me. Although, the accuracy would greatly improve if I had one.

I know Knight makes good rifles.

WIMUSKY Nice!!! You get a double... 'at a boy...for the extra challange of an old school... musket...A true purest u r! Yeah my Knight inline with a full rifled barrell, pushing a 300 gr hollow point sabot w 150 grains of Triple 7 pellets, is way more accurate then my Remington 870 with a rifled barrel. The ML doesnt even sound like a gun going off, Its not a BANG! Its more of a FAWUMPPPP!!! Like heavy artillary. If that bullet hits its target, that target KNOWS its been hit. [as well as my shoulder]:D

27 Nov 10 - Saturday
Day 10

Well, I was in the stand by 0600 this morning. It was 68? with 91% humidity and very blustery. Winds were from the WNW and variable from 5 - 15mph. Not much action, but shortly after 0900, a flock of about 2 dozen turkeys came out of the woods and cruised up the access road. That was all I saw today. I left at 1030. Couldn't hunt this evening.

A big weather front is passing through and I'm not sure if I want to go back out in the morning. It's supposed to drop to 47 or less overnight with clear skies tomorrow. Winds will be 5 - 10mph from the ENE. I'm tempted... but!

As of 0700 this morning there were over 100 hunters in the woods with me. And that could affect my success if I go out tomorrow. I just dunno. Since it's the weekend, there will likely be a large number of hunters in the woods again.

If I wait until Monday, the overnight low will be 58 degrees but there will be far fewer hunters in the woods. Last Monday there were only 5 hunters. Plus, the HSC gun club range is closed on Mondays as well. I definitely plan to hunt on Monday, but am just not sure what to do about tomorrow.

My vote is to be in the woods anytime you have the chance ! You are GUARANTEED not to shoot a deer if your on the couch... The second biggest buck of my life was shot on one of those nights when I could only be in the woods for a half hr. Get out there ! GOOD LUCK !

You crack me up. It's 6 as we speak. Supposed to be in the low teens by morning. I'll be back out b/4 daylight. Supposed to be nice and warm tomorrow. Hi of 40! Warm for us anyway.......:)

As far as hunting, you sound like me. I'm not a big fan of being around a bunch of hunters. Although, they may push the deer around which could be advantageous to you. Monday sounds like it would be more relaxing and enjoyable. Sleep in tomorrow and hunt Monday.....

Gotta agree! SOOO looking forward to Monday ... our rifle season starts. Just been so busy getting schedule cleared that I haven't gotten all the guns shot in yet! YIKES! Will take a few shots with the .257 Roberts, the .243, the .220 Swift, the 7mm-08, the .270, and the .30-06 tomorrow. That way I will be ready for whatever I am felling like on Monday ... depending on weather and where we will primarily be hunting.

Next two weeks will be in the woods most of the time. Gotta love boating and hunting at the same time! Shouldn't have rain till Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday (maybe snow - would be nicer). Been a few years since I have shot a buck, have only had 2 years out of 37 that I haven't put meat in the freezer, but the last few the bucks have not been plentiful and when I did see them they were not legal, or not presenting decent shots. I would rather pass on one than wound it (been there, done that, BRW, I know how you feel, and I don't like repeating it!). I'll report back with any luck ...

Last deer I shot was a nice 5 pointer(10 point eastern count) and I WAS sitting on the couch when I saw him, I put my coffee cup down, walked to the back door, grabbed the .270 and shot him out the back door, he was about 20 paces from the back door, drug him down a little hill, gutted and hung him up in the garage..

So I beg to differ on the "you can't get any deer while sitting on the couch!"

LMFAO..

Re: DEER HUNTERS !!! Got buck fever yet? Maybe we should post pics ?

Well, I decided not to go hunting this morning. I did get to bed early and awoke at 0530, but stayed home.

Unlike many of you, I'm retired and can hunt every day if I choose. The season at my local WMA doesn't end until January 9, 2011 so I have time.

I'd prefer not to share the woods with a zillion hunters if possible. Plus the HSC gun range will be open today and making lots of blasting noises.

Honestly, I think the deer here are as cold blooded as the people. Even though I've been out there from daybreak on up, I've only seen deer movement at 0830 and 0930 when things have warmed up a bit. Supposed to get to 80 today and 85 tomorrow. The deer are used to warm temps.

Heck, there is an area just southeast of me that has the rut in JULY!

Aspeck - the deer I shot was definitely dead... just not recovered. I'll be looking for buzzards again tomorrow when I'm out there. Some folks tell me it can take a week or so for them to appear when a carcass is in the swamp.
