Re: dixie hustler "deck job" (turned full rebuild)

Thanks! All I'm waiting for is temps to break. Transom is glued in. I'm gonna place stringers in the boat next week and mock up the deck! Its been hovering around 58? >:O I was planning to recover my seats this winter, but since this has happened I am going to try some spray vinyl dye. May do one seat next week.

I had really good results using Rusto dye:

I was told the rusto was more of a paint, and to use a spray dye instead or it will peel eventually, but the dyes I found were twice as expensive. I was planning to use the rusto on stuff that doesn't get stepped on or sat on much. Trim and bow seats, then use the duracolor stuff I got for the seats. I'm tempted to just use all rusto though.

How does it look over the seams? Can you tell something is built up over the stitch, or does it blend nicely? Even if I only get a year or two before it starts to look bad that would paste till I can afford a recovering.

Also, what did you do to prep the vinyl pre spray? Can I rub them down with acetone then spray, or is that too harsh?

Re: dixie hustler "deck job" (turned full rebuild)

Today for some reason I focused my thoughts on the hole I'll need in the deck for the fuel fill and vent lines.

I was thinking about doing this:

Cut two holes, in a similar spot to what was there, but sized just large enough for the respective hoses to fit through. Once the deck is glassed in, seal around these hoses with 5200. Then also maybe paint over that with a rubbery substance.

Does this sound like a good way to put them through, and prevent water intrusion? Or do I need to cut a larger hole to keep the deck from rubbing the hose, if that is a problem.

Also thought maybe put a piece of PVC through the holes in the deck that the hose goes through to protect the hose. Then 5200 inside the PVC around the hose.

That is pretty much exactly what I am planning to do with my fuel hoses as well. I am going to raise this section off the deck though so water will drain around it to the bilge rather than over it.

I think the seams & stitching covered pretty well:

It shot like paint, rain like paint when I stopped moving & put down too much, but left the faux 'grain' texture showing. I took the seats apart from the hinge to clean them, used TSP & a toothbrush to scrub the welting & grain really well in the early am. Let them dry in full sun most of the day. Brought them up on the porch under shade about 4p, wiped them down per the directions, acetone I think, and let them cool for a bit.

Took it slow, and shot the seats in an order that made sense at the time. Edges, seams & welting 1st, backside of the seat back, perimeter of the cushion, then the field in a crisscross pattern to minimize an uneven texture/appearance.

Those look great! I'm so tempted to try the rusto. The trim panels and bow seats don't see much abuse, so I will use it on them for sure. The rustoleum is 6$/can vs 12-14 for the true spray dyes I've looked at. The green I want to use I found only n the duracolor dye, but I won't use much of that color.

Re: dixie hustler "deck job" (turned full rebuild)

I did 4 seats (8 cushions), bought 4 cans, used 3 I think. But it's been awhile, might have used 4 & bought 5...

If I'd been more careful, I wouldn't have needed the last can, I only used 15-20% of it.

Like most paint jobs, I did A LOT of prep. Perhaps more then necessary, but for part of a morning, part of an afternoon & @$20, it'll certainly do for me..........

Haha if I had the slightest idea how or a sewing machine or a little money, or two of the three I might attempt it! But I'd say I'll stick to painting them for now, and have them reupholstered later. I saw your bench seat thread wood, and it turned out very nice! Wish I could do the same.

Re: dixie hustler "deck job" (turned full rebuild)

When I do the stringers, there will be "boxes" formed inside the stringer/bulkhead sections. Is it best to try to use one continuous strip when tabbing that goes all the way around, or do I just use one strip along each "wall"? I'm guessing it would be best for the glass to wrap around the inside corners instead of stopping there. Would it be easier to just tab all the corners together first?

Re: dixie hustler "deck job" (turned full rebuild)

I have a couple trim panels that will either be sealed and covered with vinyl, or gel coated, and the plywood in one of my bow seats needs to be replaced. I thnk I will paint these with epoxy resin. When using epoxy for sealing purposes, how many coats should be applied?I'm also still considering using epoxy to waterproof the underside of my deck.

Re: dixie hustler "deck job" (turned full rebuild)

2 unthinned epoxy coats minimum @ each side, do the edges w/ EVERY coat, so there's a total of 4 coats @ the edges.

Gelcoat won't adhere well to epoxy, so be sure what direction you're headed before you epoxy the trim panels.

Can't help w/ the continuous run or 'broken' short runs of glass in the 'boxes' in your previous post.........

Thank you jb. Yeah I have a couple ideas in my head on the trim panels. Either try to build it in and fiberglass it to the deck, then gel it all together, or something more like what was there before, with vinyl. Also thought about leaving it all open with only a small wall about 4" from the hull sides as a place for sunscreen, flip flops, etc. There will have to be speaker panels, tho uh.

No Wog is talking about you can't poly over epoxy, but you can epoxy over poly.

If you epoxy the bottom of your deck and the edges and leave the top bare wood to glass over later you'll be fine.

PL will stick to just about anything.
And that wouldn't cause a problem with the pb filling the gap between the hull and deck?

I got the transom tabbed in today with 8" 1708, then skinned with a layer of 1708. I'll add one more layer of 1708 in the am. It is more difficult to get the glass down than I thought. I would attempt to lay a spot down that had bubbled, and that would always pull some up somewhere else. So I got a few spots where there's a bubble I don't like. Which is why I held off on the final layer. I want to grind and fix the spots I don't like after they dry before I skin it with the final layer of glass. All in all I'm pretty happy with it so far. Should be plenty strong when I'm done.

I don't have any pics of after I started glassing. Don't wanna get resin all over my phone! I'll take one before I get started on the final layer in the morning. Id love tips on using the bubble buster roller. It appeared to me to do nothing.

Re: dixie hustler "deck job" (turned full rebuild)

I only found the roller to be helpful in moving resin down on really flat surfaces -- it was handy when laying down 6 oz. cloth when I did the deck. Otherwise, not so much.

You have the right idea, I think. Get the first layer right, then move on to the next. One thing that helped me was to stay with it and keep working it as it started to kick off. Sometimes that little extra bit of tackiness would make a lot of difference in how the glass would lay down.

Good luck with the second layer!

Re: dixie hustler "deck job" (turned full rebuild)

The bubble roller is used towards the end as the resins starts to tack. With the 1708 use a 4" short nap nylon roller and wet the wood with a light coat first then stick the glass to it and use your hands to kinda smooth it into place espescially into the corners and edges. then pour the resin down and use the roller to roll out the glass until it goes clear. Don't Over roll it and don't roll to heavily. When it starts to tack use the BB roller to roll out any bubble always rolling from the center out.

Alright I'll try a go by smoothing it with my hands some and see how that does!
