Haven't covered it yet, but I did 'putty' it with pb. Its curing now, will cut out keyhole and seal with csm mon

Woo hoo! I cut out the keyhole first. Got it clamped in place with that matching up, now I'm about to drill out the holes for the brackets to the swim steps I had on there. These will be perfect for installing my clamps while the transom glue is setting. Once I get that all mocked up I'm going to coat the transom, let that tack, then put a layer of csm!

Two questions. About how long will it take to tack up at 1%, and how much resin do you all suggest I mix at a time? I don't mind having to stop and mix more, I just don't want any waste. I would love for the 20 gals I bought to do it all!

I think I used about 1.5 gallons to make PB to glue in the transom, and I had a little bit (not a lot) left over to start some of the fillets. Hard to say how long you'll have at 1%... depends on the temperature of materials and air temp. I probably used 4-5 gallons to get the transom in, tabbed and skinned.

3-4 qts of PB to glue it in and make your fillets. I'd recommend having a Helper so you can be in then boat applying the PB and when you get close to being done with one they can mix up the next and hand it to you. You have at the most 20 mins to have it spread and in place and clamped up. Also make sure and do a couple of DRY RUNS first so you have the actions all down on how everything is going to go. Since you are cutting the key hole and bolt holes first it MUST align perfectly when you clamp it home or you will be doing it over. 20 mins goes by fast when you are under stress. Plan Plan Plan!!!!

I would have loved to cut and drill after it was in, but I see no way I could have done that. I cut the key hole and lined it up, then clamped that in place. Then I drilled my bolt holes from the outside. Set everything on my sawhorses and cut the clamp pieces to fit, then drilled the holes in them to match the holes in the transom. I had to drill them a little oversized because my holes are not perfectly square so they were working against one another. Now it all fits up fairly well. I will have to rush to get it all troweled on and clamped in time!

I had to apply some more pb because some of my thru holes splintered the transom. So I will try to do a layer or csm tomorrow!

Re: dixie hustler "deck job" (turned full rebuild)

What is the process for naming a boat, and where do you fellas have your decals made up?

I want to name the boat "stinkboomer". My pawpaw had a series of massive heart attacks some time before I was boarn, leaving only a small portion of his heart operational. He was told he had about six months to live. He beat all odds and lived the most influential person in all of us grand children's lives until he passed away about 4 years ago after getting copd. He was an amazing godly man, and taught us all lessons we live by, the whle family.I have a leaky 12 foot aluminum john boat he was going to help me "tighten the rivets up on" so I didn't have to use some "unsightly caulk" shortly before the cold took his breath away.

He was a machinist and fabricator before his heart attacks, and was the most ingenuitive person I've ever known. He could fix anything:, and was always building things instead of buying them. We never got to work on tjat john boat, and I would have loved to have his help on this boat! His last few days he was in and out ofcsciousness and I'll never forget the last time he came to, looked at me, and said "I love you stinkboomer".

I don't know where it came from, but that was the nickname he always called me when I was a little boy. So that is where the peculiar name comes from. I would love to dedicate this boat to him by naming it, "StinkBoomer"!

I got mine right here at iboats.com. They do custom lettering. I was very pleased with the results.

Re: dixie hustler "deck job" (turned full rebuild)

Got a layer of csm on the tranny. It all looks pretty good, except for the edges. I could not get it to lay over them. I would roll over it, move on, and a few moments later it would have "popped" back up. I'll grind that off tomorrow and put some pb over the spots where the csm didn't lay over the edge.

Next time I'm going to try using thumbtacks or something on outside corners/edges.

I struggled with that, too. I think next time I'd try thumbtacking some plastic dropcloth material to hold the CSM on the radius.

CSM = the devil's work!

Where it was doubled up wasn't so bad. There was more of a vertical surface for it to be on as it was hanging. But the single 3/4 widths were rounded so as soonas it curved it had to curve again.

I'm definitely on a learning curve here.

Did you read and study this? "Fabricating Decks, Stringers, and Transoms" It tells you how to do the edges. Basically you cut the CSM approx 2" larger than the transom and then pull, tug and tear the the overlap so it gets loose and "Hairy". Then us a Cheap "Chip Brush" (I cut the Bristles 1/2 off) an then DAB the resin on don't brush so the glass will overlap and adhere to the edges. Works really well.

Re: dixie hustler "deck job" (turned full rebuild)

I did read it, and sorta tried that, but not exactly. I will try that on the next tight radius I do. I sorta tugged on some of it as I was trying to get it laid down. I forgot to mention I have all stringers cut out too. I haven't set them in the hull to check fitment yet, but they are cut identical to the old ones. I imagine I will have to do a little adjusting to the shape on the bottom of them with my grinder. Ready to get them in!

Don't be bashful when tuggin on the CSM. Pull and tear on it. You can Add torn fibers to the edges from a pile on the floor. What ever it takes. I'm sure the Stringers will fit fine.

I actually did apply some loose fibers to a bare spot haha!

Is it best to apply resin little by little, or a lot at a time?

I did one edge by saturating a strip in the bucket and putting it in place. Worked well but it used more resin that way.

Re: dixie hustler "deck job" (turned full rebuild)

I have decided (I think) to go with 2 layers of csm and then 6oz on top of my deck. I think that will yield a little stronger build, and from what I see on my first layer on the transom, the csm doesn't make that much of a smooth gel ready without sanding surface. If I have 1708 left over from the stringers I might use that on the top layer. It is a similar finished surface to 6 oz?

I ordered a gallon of interlux bilge coat for my bilge area. I'm sure there will be lots left over, and I don't wanna waste it. Would it be helpful at all to coat the sides of my stringers (after glass of course) with what's left over? Or is it only petroleum product resistant and not so much water resistant?

I'm leaving after work tomorrow for a 3 day 30 mile backpacking trim in the blue ridge mountains. I hope to clamp the transom into the boat before I leave, so it will be ready for tabbing and glassing when I get back! The stringers are cut and assembled, so theoretically I'm ready to glue them in and glass when I finish with the transom. I'm so ready to get wood in and make it look like a boat!

Re: dixie hustler "deck job" (turned full rebuild)

Just got home from about a 35 mile hike in the blue ridge mountains. Had a blast! While climbing and hiking of course I pondered my boat quite a bit. Today for some reason I focused my thoughts on the hole I'll need in the deck for the fuel fill and vent lines.

20130110_151019.jpg

I was thinking about doing this:

Cut two holes, in a similar spot to what was there, but sized just large enough for the respective hoses to fit through. Once the deck is glassed in, seal around these hoses with 5200. Then also maybe paint over that with a rubbery substance.

Does this sound like a good way to put them through, and prevent water intrusion? Or do I need to cut a larger hole to keep the deck from rubbing the hose, if that is a problem.

Also thought maybe put a piece of PVC through the holes in the deck that the hose goes through to protect the hose. Then 5200 inside the PVC around the hose.

Also, I believe that originally the motor mounts were put in place and glassed after the deck was fastened to the top of the stringer. How much height will each layer of 1708 add to my motor mounts, so I can roughly figure out how large to make them to get the height roughly where the motor sat before.

It varies. Depends on the installer and how much resin they use. I'd approximate about 3/32"

Just read up on your project ! Looks like your plugging away nicely and have a good plan going .. I,m gunna hang out and watch ya get this boat splashed if that's ok .. Let the glassing begin ! Your doing great !
