Re: dixie hustler "deck job" (turned full rebuild)

If I understand you correctly you have purchased 28 yds of CSM? and 15 yds of 1708 and 16 yds of 1708 6" Tape? ONly 5 Gals of Resin?
You will need 15 gals of Resin for sure. CSM Drinks Resin!!!! Your deck will prolly 18 yds of CSM if you put one layer on the bottom and 3 on top. A gallon of resin will wet out approx. 4 yds of CSM so it will take almost 5 gallons by the time you fillet, tab and lay the glass. Your transom will take 5 gallons more and so will the stringers. You should have enough 1708

Yes I know I need much more resin :p. I've been buying it in stages of about 300$ each. That was enough to get me started. I'll be placing one more order by Monday.

Re: dixie hustler "deck job" (turned full rebuild)

I don't have a pic to post. You can't tell much under there with the low light and a cell picture, but I got the transom ground today.

I used a metal cutting disc (that came with the grinder) to cut away the lip from the inner skin and clean inside the groove around the transom. Then I broke out the 24 grit sanding disc. Holy cow! That thing removes glass quick fast and in a hurry!

I think I'll keep them for removing glass lips and the bits of stringer and deck glass that are left, and use 36 grit for the rest. You gotta be careful with that 24!

While this part of the build is by no means pleasant, it's nowhere near as bad as it can sound. I put unfaced insulation up in a cabinet shop I used to work at and that was far worse than grinding this glass.

I also ordered 10 more gallons of resin and 5 yards of 6" csm tape for my transom tabbing. I know I can cut it from what I've already bought, but that will be for my first tabbing endeavor, so the smoother the better. I have officially exhausted all money I had put aside in savings for this project. I guess I budgeted fairly well. I'll spend a few hundred more dollars on durabak and bilge kote, etc, but it has worked out fairly well.

Sounds like you're half way up the hill, once you're done with the grinding it'a all down hill and the fun part of building starts.

I think grinding the rest of the hull will be easier than grinding the transom. It was all fairly good except for the outside edges near the top. The glass had nowhere to go when I was in those areas and it would build up in the air in a few seconds and I couldn't see. I hope the worst is behind me!

Re: dixie hustler "deck job" (turned full rebuild)

If you look at the bottom of my transom on each side, there are voids where the outside skin most likely was not really bonded to the wood. The glass in these sections was very fibrous and seemed to not have enough resin to match. Had to take it down a lot to get through this stuff, and I'm not done with all of it, as I wanted to be sure it was necessary before I took off so much material. I'm either gonna have to rely on my adhesive to fill these when I clamp the core in, or fill them flush first. I was thinking of mixing some pb and putting it over these voids and "screeding" it with a straight board or something. Then afrer it cures sand it all down nice and flat all the wah across. Sound like a good approach?

Filling with the PB and sanding is the way to go.

That's what I was guessing. Give me some pb practice as well.

I want to add some sort of bracket to my seats to allow them to be adjustable forward/backward. I saw a few such devices here on iboats, are any particularly better than another? As it was it was a bit difficult squeezing between the steering wheel and seat.

I wish I had taken more pics of the inside of the boat before I ripped it out. Here is a picture that sorta shows the trim along the sides of the interior and the panels housing the speakers and such. I have decided I want to build that shelf back out of wood and incorporate that and the speaker panels into one solid piece. Tabbed in and durabaked or gelled along with the deck for one nice clean seamless look.

Then I want to trim it out with hydroturf as well as strategic places on the deck. I think it could look really nice.

The hydroturf prob won't come right after I'm done with the building, and probably not all at once. Wanna go with an off white and lime green :)

I also want to hydro turf this over the motor. Maybe all three lids back tbere. Much better than those stupid foam strips.

Found another picture showing the panels better. The dark blue panels housing the speaker and radio. I want to build in a wood panel creating the face of that shelf and go right on up instead of reusing these panels. Then I would trim in that rectangular piece with the hydro turf.

Would 1 gallon of gelcoat be enough to do my deck and hull sides? I may use some white paint up the hull sides as it will be mostly hidden. Perhaps I'll have some bilge kote left.

Sweeeet! :D jay says without a buffing its not all that slippery, so I can gel it for now and be back on a board soon without breaking the bank on flooring! Then I'll purchase the hydroturf when funds allow.

Wasn't able to work on it today. My girlfriend is a third grade teacher, and I didn't think about her being off today for presidents day when I planned to work on the transom today. Since she's a teacher and I work weekends we rarely have a day to spend together.

Hope to tackle filling in the voids with pb tomorrow on the bottom ⅓ of my transom so its flat all the way across. Maybe make a template amd cut some wood if time allows. Wish me luck! Any last minute tips? I have some acetone to clean it well before I apply the pb

A coarse roller pad? I guess I just kinda assumed I'd be slathering it; n with a putty knife.

Edit-im thinking you meant to make the gel less slick. Doh!

Pre heat resin & etc and the area of the boat your working on to above 60 1st, then work quick, then reapply heat to hold above 60 once you finish working w the PB

Will that make the gel unattractive?

If you consider a texture like this unattractive: http://www.magnetpaints.com/Monstaliner/images/monstaliner-roller-texture_0777.jpg

It looks like there are also foam rollers like this: http://www.pickupspecialties.com/Herculiner/Herculiner_kit.jpg that may be a little less aggressive. I'd probably try out a couple things on some scrap wood and see what I liked best.
