Perhaps? Dunno but it didn't seem to work. They ain't coming out by hand!

In retrospect maybe I should slather on a thicker coat of grease. I smeared it on, then I ran my hand down to remove the excess. I also started to pull it out as soon as I filled each cavity, but I feared it would continue to expand to close the gap. If the winching yields nothing, I guess I just have ropes under my deck! They did stay on the bottom, I could watch them through my deck holes.

I ran out of foam, still have a little left on the starboard side of the tank, and both sides of the bilge. I wanted to glass in the deck this week, but I'll have to switch gears and work on my tank enclosure, fairing the transom, and maybe make up my side panels. Still productive things to do!

On the other foaming I kept a wide putty knife handy to.scrape away foam before it set and kept it much cleaner. For those interested it sands right off too.

I don't think the ropes are coming out :p. I want to try to winch them out. I'm afraid for the ones that turn corners that might potentially cause harm to the boat pulling on them like that. May still give it a shot.

I didn't figure they would. They'd have to be perfectly straight with no kinks, dips, or turns to come out.

Just leave them in there, they'll reinforce your foam. You'll end up damaging your foam if you try to winch them out, might damage other stuff too.

Lots of folks fear the foam, glad you bit the bullet and went with it... it might be your best friend some day.

Re: dixie hustler "deck job" (turned full rebuild)

I never considered not using it, I only considered pre pouring it before doing the dexk. I'm happy with my decision. I could hear no popping and creaking. Of course it takes the path of least resistance and excess just goes out of the limber holes, pour holes, etc. I'm going to.drill the ropes back just far enough to put a plug in the hole I can remove and check for moisture. Boy was that deck ever warm!!

I think there is a lot of opportunity for foam underneath the cap over the motor too. This will of course wait until the brunt of my rebuild and cleaning is over with, but you seem to be the foam guru. I'd like to look into foaming this some how. I've put a lot of effort and love into this boat. If it ever takes on water, I want to keep it off the bottom!

Re: dixie hustler "deck job" (turned full rebuild)

I'm back at it full force today. Went to the lake for some fun with friends tues, and had a bit of a crisis arise while out I had to tend to yesterday. Glad I put in so many hours Mon, or it would have been a wasted week! I had 4 more ft? of foam 2 day aired to me. Gonna finish the foam today, replace the wood pucks, tab the deck to the stringers inside the tank compartment, and glass in that 2x2 I've been putting off for so long. Also hope to cut out my deck glass.

I have a youth retreat to go to next week, so no boat building then. I'm a 'chaperone' (aka 25 yr old youth who never grew up :D)

Hey jig, you ever considered putting in a structure made of wood dowels of stainless mesh or something, sort of like putting rebar in concrete, inside the foam for more structural integrity?

Alrighty, I'm out of 1708. I believe all I have left to do with that is the motor mounts and the seat bases. Can the seat bases be glassed over with just a layer or two of 1708, after being glued down with pb? If so I guess I'll just order one more yard of 1708.

I don't guess I'll get the same response if I ask y'all, to let me use 4 layers of csm on the motor mounts lol?

Haha, okay okay I'll put in an order for a little more 1708! I got the 2x glassed in the center of the tank compartment today with 2 layers of 1708, tabbed the decking to the stringers around the tank, finished my foaming, and pb'd my wood pucks back in their holes. Once all that is sanded....again, and the tabbing is blended in, it is ready for a few layers of decking glass. Then I need to drop the tank in, paint the deck, piece my cap back together, build seat mounts, motor mounts, side panels,...oyyyy.

Sure, but don't forget to use several layers of newspaper between layers of CSM! :bounce:

Seriously, you're making great progress and doing nice work. You'll be done before no time. (Running out of supplies mid-job is a pain, no?)

Sorry the rope idea didn't work, but I'm not surprised. That foam is so sticky and fills up every nook and cranny, it's no wonder the rope won't come out. A good try, though!

I've been thinking of using newspaper under the layer of 6 oz on the deck...no paint needed!

Look what I found in my truck! This one has a 4 amp motor, and adjustable opm. The biggest reason, though, I think this model was put in my back seat :p, is it has an adjustable orbit. Adjustable from 1/8 to 1/4". I believe on 1/4" it will really do some sanding. If it isn't worth the money, I can take it back. Gotta speed this thing up! Hopefully it won't sling glass all over me like when I sand with the grinder.

Re: dixie hustler "deck job" (turned full rebuild)

Alrighty after going back and forth, I have decided on gelcoat for the deck. I want to get white, and mix in the off white pigment.

I am still not sure whether I want to sand and gel csm, or lay 6oz and gel that. Some seem to like the csm, some the 6 oz. I would LOVE some pictures of painted or gelled decks with csm and some with 6oz if anyone has some handy.

I'm guessing 3 coats of gel. I want to sand and fair well before I gel, then roll on the coats. I know it will be a little orange peely, but for now I don't need it to be very slick. I will sand and buff it before I hydroturf it if I think it needs it.

Are we in agreeance that 1gal will do it? The transom and hull sides I will paint with bilge coat.

This may be a hairbrained idea, but what would be wrong with leaving my transom unpainted so I could SEE if it were ever to get wet or black in the future. It does not see direct sunlight, so it should be fine, no?

Gelcoat needs to go on thick. About the thickness of a Penny. One gallon when rolled on to that thickness will do about a 5' x 8' area. I Suppose you could leave your Transom Clear if you wanted to. Just remember you only have about 15-20 mins working time so I'd advise mixing it 2 qts at a time to make sure you get it all rolled out before it sets up. Use a 1/4" or 3/8" nap roller. If you want it to smooth out a bit better thin with 10% acetone or styrene. IF you use styrene make sure to use a respirator and gloves cuz that stuff is real nasty and will burn you inside and out.

Alright! I'd really only planned on doing a quart at a time, just because that is what I've become comfortable with while using resin. I can always sand and buff it if the final coat isn't pretty.

Re: dixie hustler "deck job" (turned full rebuild)

Ha ha. Have an update. Not a big one, but progress nonetheless. Today, in report, doesn't seem like much, but it was a good full day!

Finished sanding my tabbing and making the edges of the tab transition gradually to nothing. Then sanded the whole deck. Cleaned all the dust out of the boat and vacuumed up. Prepped the last remaining foam holes and replaced the pucks, then I cut out both layers of csm.

I will have to sand the last few foam holes in the morning, vacuum and blow the deck, acetone, and I think I can start glassing the deck! I hope I will have time to glass both layers tomorrow. I haven't decided whether I will use 6oz as my finish layer. I think I'm going to glass 2 layers of csm, then see what it looks like. If I don't think it will sand and gel attractively, I'll do a layer of 6 oz. I'm thinking of leaving the csm, and using 6 oz on my side panels (which will pretty much only be about a 6" high wall placed a few inches away from the hull sides, to create a place to catch flip flops, sunblock, etc).

This rascal was difficult to glass, to say the least! Two layers of 1708 over it. I will 5200 strips of plastic over the wood strip, as well as on each side of the bottom of this tank compartment. Then glue the tank to the plastic strips with 5200. That will attach it to the hull, and allow drainage.

I forgot to take a picture of all the csm laid out on the deck, but I'm sure you all get the idea there.
