Very good job. Helps having the right tool for the job. I use a Consew.

This is how I wrapped the U-shaped piece of foam to make it more water proof. Recall on the first one I just tucked it around the foam like it was originally. Water could still get down to the foam this way. On the second one, I completely wrapped the foam then overlapped it in such a way that any water than seep between the seems would drain down past the foam.

I used double-sided scotch tape to hold it in place.

Re: putting it all together

I decided to just cover a piece of 1/2" plywood with vinyl and screw it to the back. I used welting to trim it out and fill the gaps. I rounded over the back edge of the plywood with a 1/4" radius bit so that it looked smooth with no sharp corners.

Unexpected problem. I didn't anticipate how hard it would be to cover that exposed inside lower corner of the backer. I stared at it for about 45 minutes before deciding to just cover a small piece of wood with vinyl and gluing it in. I also covered the exposed side of the back support with vinyl. I think it turned out okay.

Natemoore your first go at this looks amazing ! Much better than mine . I just didn,t have enough fertilizer for my money tree so I had to struggle though it with my mothers old Kenmore .. It was still much cheaper than buying new seats . Keep up the good work !

I had to sell some pretty dear stuff to be able to buy the sewing machine. I sold my Gulf War USMC flight helmet and O2 mask on ebay for $500. The thing had been in my attic for 18 years, so I'm glad I sold it to a collector who could appreciate it and display it properly.

I've never been one for "I love me" walls, "I love me" rooms, or even "I love me" levels in a house. I once met an F-14 pilot who devoted the upstairs of his house to himself. Cool, like a mini Cubi Point O-club, but not my style.

Re: putting it all together

I used a couple of adjustable Seasense pedestal mounts to install the seats. I like to sit up higher than the windshield when I'm cruising around and the wife likes to turn around backwards to watch the kids while tubing, so this worked out great.

You can see what I've got left, both side panels, the rear seats, the compartment cover, and the dog house. Compared to the chairs, these will be really easy. I'll post pictures of those processes too.

I'll be replacing the carpet this winter as well as repairing a couple of soft spots around the anchor storage well that is in between the two seats.

Doghouse

Doghouse

I did the doghouse over a couple days. I found some weakened and wet plywood and I was debating on rebuilding it,too. I decided to just let it dry out, do some repair work where the hinges are screwed on, and recover it. I don't have easy and affordable access to high density spray foam for the sound deadening.

The only thing I'm not happy with is how it is no longer smooth around the cup holders, but I'm hoping some time in the sun will make it all even out. It looked perfect before I cut the "X" in the vinyl and pushed the holders in. I'm wondering if I shouldn't have cut out a circle a little smaller than the cup holder so that all the stretchy forces would be even and possible prevent the unevenness.

Oh well, it's done now. I don't have time to analyze at length every single thing I do in this project.

You should be able to get the wrinkles out with a heat gun. Just take it really easy with the heat. Practice with a scrap piece.

I think it's the foam below the vinyl (?). I'm going to try circular cutouts, then a heat gun...on low!

Update: Yeah, doing circular cutouts helped a bunch.

Re: Doghouse

when I do cup holders I cut it into a "pie" straight lines across the circle then leave the excess to be pulled into the hole and stapled...the cup holder inserts and covers it up real nice and neat

In my case, it was actually the "X" cut that was causing the deformities. It looks better now that I've done a circular cut, no staples. Think I'll got ahead and just silicone the cup holders in, since they tend to fly out.

Re: Doghouse

if you just cut an X it will cause deformities...cut it into a pie, like 8 slices and it usually flods down real nice, what you did works too, but I like to have it stapled down

My pie slices are actually quarters, especially when I make my grandmothers chocolate fudge pie:D Rest her soul.

Re: DIY reupholstering of boat seats/captain's chairs

I want to keep this thread alive (and not get yelled at for resurrecting an old thread) because I'm going to finish up my boat this spring/summer. My projects leap frog over each other for top priority.

Plebe summer at the Naval Academy isn't quite as sever as what a crochity old Grand Fleet Admiral of the Sea can dish out.

Projects currently on my plate:
Finish boat upholstery
Install OEM exhaust bellows, U-joint bellows, trim sender/limit switches
Replace right quarter panel and repaint 2000 Tundra truck
Build DIY smoker
Build motorized sausage grinder-grain mill combo
Build shooting house for hunting club (yea! got a membership!)
Finish exterior and interior of workshop/mancave
Re-sod front yard
Remove mega play structure (now that kids are teenagers)
Plant garden
Finish patio cover
Build outdoor kitchen
Sporterize another Mosin Nagant
Reupholster cushions/couch in camper trailer
Oh yeah, replace that missing piece of quarter round my wife's been bugging me about.

I've got so much to live for!

Nice work, have you done the interior side panels yet? I had to replace my seats, they were just to far gone. My panels are on my list of things to do.

I'm resurrecting this thread! Finally getting back to the boat. I'll be posting pictures of the side panel reupholstering, assuming the iboats server lets me. For the past two days, I've gotten nothing but server errors.
