better have the clylinders clearance checked in the holes with wiscos they generally have 6-8 thousands clearance drop a cast in there you could have some problems .

Re: evinrude 150 spitfire rebuild

Which cyls were these by the way? Numbers...

I do not know the answer to this, and have not read anywhere....take a stock STD bore piston and weigh it. Then take a .020 oversize piston and weigh it. Are they the same? Or is the .020 just slightly heavier?

Seems logical to me that the piston mfgrs would make the pistons, no matter the oversize, all the same weight...that being the weight of the stock STD bore piston.

Anyone know for sure?

Edit:

I found the cyls reading back thru the posts....1,3,6. Two on one side, and one on the other.
I think you are wise to go ahead and get the cast pistons.

Re: evinrude 150 spitfire rebuild

well its kinda cool to see the threat to start to get some attention. i have to say this project is addictive! and ive gotten pretty use to the fact that i just bring my wallet with me when i sit down at the computer because im sure at somepoint ill have to get somethiing for the project. haha. i literally picked up my last two gaskets i needed today a voltage regulator gasket and the main base gasket so thats good and the vro pump is all replumbed with new fuel like that is ethenol safe. which i hope it is cuz at 3 bucks a foot the stuff adds up.
and not only that i ordered my new trolling motor too. im upgrading from the origional motorguide 24v 45# to a motorguide pro series 70# 24v. so that dude should look nice on the boat. but thank you guys once again for all your input it sure does help to have someone just run stuff by you to get you out of a motor building trance. so once again i appreciate it.

Re: evinrude 150 spitfire rebuild

The OEM pistons are the same weight, regardless of oversize.

Aftermarkerket pistons often claim to be OEM weight, but must be verified.

I don't mix cast and forged. I also don't mix cam-ground (machined out of round) and standard pistons.

Wiseco outboard pistons are now machined to fit in stock OEM sizes/oversizes without adjustments. The nominal clearance is .0048, although many rebuilders go .0005 over to avoid sticking a piston if owner doesn't adhere to a proper breakin' procedure.

Most rebuilders using cast pistons will also go .0005 over to ensure they don't see the motor again, but they are essentially adding wear.

boats dot net will have best retail OEM prices to public.
hope this helps.

Re: evinrude 150 spitfire rebuild

hey guys, just wondering if i can get some help with an issue that came up. i made the mistake of buying a clymer manual months back and the torque specs in it are hard to find seeing how it shows so many different engines. i even downloaded a pdf online and it doesnt include the chapter from the oem manual that includes all motor specs including the rod cap bolts and crank case cover flange bolts. so just wondering where i can find those or if anyone knows them. also concerning the gel seal on the crank case. does the gel seal just act as the gasket? just making sure that thats where it goes. thanks to everyone

what year is the 150? gel seal is the gasket use one bead less than 1/8 bead in the middle consistant it squishes out pretty far so be carefull you dont want it to get near sealing rings

Re: evinrude 150 spitfire rebuild

the motor is a 1993. i found some literature on it today and it said a 1/4 inch bead and even after using emory paper on the gasket surface i can tell where the old stuff went so itll be easy to put back on. the only thing is that the local marinas dont carry it because it has a shelf life they said so i was wondering if there was anything to buy at a local auto parts store that pretty much does the same thing? i know permatex makes some form a gasket stuff i just dont know how much itll squish out once torqued down and all.

Re: evinrude 150 spitfire rebuild

just cleaning the boat today and i was thinking. if any of you know the older ranger tail trailers.... they used this wheel jack that is actually welded to the top of the trailer at the point of it. well the nut that holds my handle on has taken a **** for some reason and makes me nervous. so i was wondering if anyone knows where i can find a wheel jack like the old ones used to be or where i can get parts for it. i really dont want to have to break down and get one of those ugly bolt on ones that hangs on side of my trailer.

Re: evinrude 150 spitfire rebuild

lol yea the rooster tail was always a pleasant view. its a shame that the motor took a **** when i did cuz even just a few seconds before it died, its still one of the most throttle responsive outboards ive ran. i can only hope that this project that keeps getting bigger by the day actually turns out and that everythings works flawlessly. From the beginning i just wanted to rebuild the motor but now its turned into a motor, complete trailer paint, lighting, wheels and tires, deck carpet, all new gauges, new trolling motor, new seats, new compartment lid locks project. needless to say im hacing fun with it though. Im trying to always keep it fun so theres some days that just dont seem to work out to try to get some wrench time on the boat. i figure if i keep it fun, in time ill keep it successful.

Re: evinrude 150 spitfire rebuild

The thought occurred to me while reading this. Did you check with your boat insurance to make sure this was not a covered loss? It was clearly an accident neither expected nor intended by the insured. It was also sudden and sccidental rather than something that occurred over a period of time. Depending on who your coverage is with and dwhat coverage you have, it just may be covered. If it turns out it is not covered, you have lost nothing but a phone call.
