I’m also a first time boat owner and the boat runs good no problems all summer, I have put it up for winter changed crankcase and gear oil and fogged the motor , but any other maintenance suggestions I should do to keep it running good this spring? I do plan to change all filters and plugs before I run it in spring.

New water pump impeller every 5 years.----And do not slam it into anything ( rocks ) that causes a dynamic halt.---Often results in scrapping the motor.

You mean the boat itself or the prop hitting rocks, I understand the prop but if I slam into a bank with the pontoons which I don’t plan to do it could cause dynamic halt? What does this do to motor?

If you hit a rock with the prop it may destroy the lower unit.----May cause the wee timing chain ( underneath the block ) to skip timing sprockets.----Damage the valves and cause damage beyond the value of the motor.

Ok I gotcha, I did run into shallow water this summer and hit bottom but I was raising trim up and put in neutral at the time it hit, ended up taking a dime size chunk out of two of the blades, so that ride back it definitely felt more vibration, but after I put new prop on it ran good.

You did change the oil filter, when you changed the engine oil, right?

Pump grease into the grease fittings and clean and grease the steering rod, if you have one.

You rinsed the powerhead, right? Spray it with corrosion guard stuff.

Does the motor have the correct prop on it for operation on a pontoon boat ?----Diameter and pitch of your prop?

Does / has this actually happened ? dont get me wrong :) I get the feeling you have a bit of experience and Im just curious as to wether this is a common issue with this engine when peeps give the prop a decent whack , Sounds outrageous , youd have to think its deliberate way of effecting future sales if the whole donkey is replaced under insurance , because it would be sooooo easy to stop this happening if it ever did .

Could be a bit "geographic" 😁 but the fact that it happens is not right . Im trying to think where else I have seen any chains running in a horizontal plane ........Im sure I will think of some as soon as I post this 🤣
