Started the install of the engine, it takes a lot of chain pulling to pick it up high enough Photo618.jpg

Tried to install and it was not going in, need two shoe horns. Took it back out and repositioned the straps to put the engine at an angle tipping to the rear. This helped but still no go. So removed the seawater pump and alternator.
Photo619.jpg

Managed to get it in and put everything back on including the new elbows. Most of this was done laying on top the motor hanging upside down. :brick: Don't know if I'm getting better or just getting use to the pain. Made a bracket to hold my lube bottle and go figure the hose is not long enough. This one is no issue, the hose is cheap and readily available
Photo620.jpg

And now for the rest of the story, there seems to always be something else. My new exhaust elbows are 9 inches from the transom and about 1.5 inches high and to the right or the hole. Now I need about 12 to 13 inches of flexible exhaust hose. Seem no one has the Shields or Trident 252 of 252V (silicone) 4 inch hose. All backorder 2 to 3 weeks. Starting to think about a 4 inch pipe (copper or stainless) and 2 of my 4 inch boots.

Anyone have any other ideas?

Also had to remove the bar used to raise/lower my engine hatch because the elbows will interfere with it. now have to make something up to use the drive of maybe remove it. Don't think this will be a big thing but for now on the back burner

I'm running 5 ply turbo hose. Its high temp silicone that is good for over 550 degrees. Much higher temp capacity than standard exhaust hose. Just hit up your local diesel repair shop

Have looked around for the turbo hose but only coming up with short pieces. Have any other sources for the stuff and where it can be had?

I did go and buy a 2 foot piece of 4 inch silicone wire reinforced hose from Marine Exhaust Inc down in FL. Hope when it arrives it will work, otherwise, I'm going to the local muffler shop and get a 5 to 6 inch piece of 4 inch pipe and use my old exhaust boots for the remainder of this year. Will get other stuff for next season

Gave it a quick between the bunk paint job today, plan to jack it up off the trailer at the end of the season and do it right for next season.

Photo631.jpg

Installed the turns downs and readjusted the engine mounts for a better alignment. Having of time waiting for the hose I find myself tweaking things

Photo632.jpg

Uncrated the drive and was looking for the serial number, all I found was this tag

Photo633.jpg

Just above the Mercruiser label there is small print which sates "Serial Number" but there is none there. On the other side it has "Drive Ratio" which is also blank.
Kinda figured that info would be there. Might give Gavin Marine a call to find out why it's not there

Photo634.jpg

Made me a tool to adjust the engine mounts easier. Not enough room to use a full length 1 1/16 wrench, but after you bend it a couple times t works pretty good. Like those cheap Pittsburg tools for such mods

A few more war wounds for the tight quarters

Contacted Gavin Marine and they bought an upper and a lower from Merc and put them together, this is why it doesn't have a serial number. I'm sure it's OK but bothers me to find out now the issue instead of knowing it from the get go.

I need to find out about this black cloud that is following me around. Checked the gear lube it was ok, then put the drive on and the props. A little later I see lube under the drive. Pull the props and it's the inner shaft seal leaking. Sure looks like they didn't pressure test it before putting the lube in. Everything about this project keeps going in the wrong direction. Now get to find out how to get warranty done.

And the saga continues, Just received what Marine Exhaust said was their "flexible" 4 inch exhaust hose, this is as stiff as any hard way stiff hose, no flex to it at all. Then to add a bit more icing they only sent 1 foot. The website indicates that the minimum order is 2 feet and list a price of 50 each. So sounds to me like 50 for 2 feet and 100 for 4 feet and so on. Nope they did me a benefit by only selling me 1 foot.

Bummer . . . totally a bummer. That's boats for ya . . . You mentioned a warranty . . . are you talking the part or the service???

My boat just went in today and I had my fingers crossed with all of the outdrive and transom work that I did this year. . . so far so good.

I will repeat. 4" 5-ply silicone and kevlar turbo hose from your local big diesel service senter. about $25 per foot last time I bought it. good for 550 F sustained (I have had them much higher), comes in Red, Blue, or Black. usually sold in a 4 foot stick. the short flex "hump hose" are about $18 each and will bend to almost a 90 degree. 4-ply is a bit cheaper.

Sorry Scott guess I'm a dunce, I'm coming up empty. Have been able to find what your discussing but they are all short pieces of hose. I need something that will fill an 8 inch space and move 1.5 to 2 inches. What is a big diesel service center or better yet do you have a link to where someone is selling what your discussing?

Called and emailed Purosil and discussed. Larry Scott said he will get his engineers on it and give me a call back. Also called eddie marine and asked them. EMI indicated my current setup will not work and I should have bought there 3+ system which also dropped back down after the manifolds. The guy offered to take mine back but I had bungs installed so that was a no-go. Another $2600 will get me a new set which will work. Man this black could keeps coming.

Called my local welding shop and ask if they can do some mods for me, they said sure. So unless I hear something tonight I'm taking my elbows to them tomorrow. I was sure after getting my new hump boots and pipe I could make this work, was not going to happen  .

What is not working:
Fuel gauge is not working, maybe its a digital sender, don't know
Trim limit is not working
Trim gauge is pegged in the red zone

More to come later

Boy, that all sounds like way too much 'fun' . . . I would thing the local welder should get you back in business. I hate adjusting trim limits and trim senders . . . it took me 2 hours to do the limits on my outdrives a few weeks back.

Hopefully it will not be too much longer.
