Re: Gas BBQ Grill Choice?

I'm a charcoal man myself, but we were given a gas grill, and the wife really likes it for during the week. It rusted away, so I went on the search to get her a new one. After looking them all over and reading reviews, I bought a basic Weber for $400. It's built like a tank, and cooks very well and evenly. I even sprung for a cover, as we plan to keep it a long time. My charcoal rig is a Weber, but I'm thinking about a Big Green Egg for the future. One of my favorite ways to grill is to take a large item like a roast or a turkey, and put a drip pan under it. I catch the drippings and make gravy with them- Yum! Nice and smoky! If I can't do that in a BGE, I'll stick with my Weber kettle.

With the BGE just put a drip pan under the roast, no problem. Can do almost anything. I know people who even make pizza on it.

For ribs I will take the rack and wrap the bottom with foil then smoke it for 3-4 hours at 225 degrees. Then baste with sauce, cover with foil, then go to 325 for 30-45 min. Drippings are caught in the foil.

I cant remember the brand i have, but i got it at Lowes, it is 2 seperate cookers, one is gas and one is charcol, then it has a smoker box on the side of the charcol one.
It really is the best of all worlds. Gas for the quickies, Charcol for the good flavor and the wmoker box is just plain cool to have.
I did 22 lbs of salmon in it just a couple weeks ago. Turned out great.
It also has the cast iron grates.

Re: Gas BBQ Grill Choice?

Well thanks for all the suggestions so far. Maybe we need a recipe section??:D

After I struck out on the business closing deal last week , I just kinda gave up the search for a few days.

As for the charcoal vs. gas debate - I've got that covered with a couple of Mr. Weber's units. One is 25 years old and near perfect..

As luck would have it I was running to a local garden center this past Sunday and they were closing out their stock of grills. After a bit of debate between the Weber and Ducane gassers , I had them load up the Ducane and had a great bbq that night! It is huge and gets hot really fast.I cook for a non- red meat eater, a lactose intolerant carnivorous child, and myself a couple times a week.:)
I was able to do summer squash, potatoes , tomatoes and corn ( right out of our garden) as well as 2 garlic infused flank steaks and 2 chicken breasts and still do a saute on the side burner with no problem, didn't even turn on the 4th main burner:)
So far I am happy with the choice, the only real bummer is that the side burner doesn't really modulate the flame down far enough for me. A Ducane tech said it was designed to stay kinda high so it won't get blown out. hmmm..

Thanks again to all!

Re: Gas BBQ Grill Choice?

We had purchased a huge 5 burner SS grill from a big box store, on clearance, and used it for 3 years. At that point the burners were all shot and it would cost as much to rebuild as it would to buy anohter one. As luck would have it we were able to get my moms WEBER. The thing cooks great and it 12 years old. We still use charcoal on the weber kettle when we have time, steaks taste better. But when time is short the Weber gas does a good job.

You get what you pay for, I would have to buy or rebuild 3 or 4 of the big box look good units for what one quality grill has done.

I have had a Weber three burner with cast iron grills for about 5 years. It has been great. It was about $500 at Home Depot back then. The only maintenance has been replacing the steel "flavor bars" that rusted through with the more expensive stainless ones after about 3 years. Other than that, just cleaning. I've had less expensive grills, but I doubt I'll ever have to buy another one. This is made to last.

That's my $0.02

I prefer to do the non direct cooking methed if possible. Burner #1 on high, square alluminum drip pan on the cold side 1/4 full of juice or water to catch drippings and for moisture, its a slower cook, but no flair ups to burn the meal and a easy clean:)
