Re: Gay marriages

You know, this thread started out bashing a label,"gay", whatever the heck that means.

Now there are arguments about what another label, "redneck", means.

Neither tells you anything useful about the unique human being behind the label.

More subtle are the mix of boasting and/or objecting to various out-of-context references to the Bible.

Labels are what seperates us, friends. Whether we shout them in attempts to validate our arguments or in attempts to insult those with other views they are, in the end, meaningless.

If you have to use a label to present or attack a point of view you clearly don't understand that point.

If you have thought through an issue and come to a conclusion, take responsibility for it! It is yours. Labels don't make it correct or rational and labels cannot make someone else's conclusions wrong.

Re: Gay marriages

JB I agree with alot of what you say cept where you say some things said/boasted about what the bible says have been used out of context. Could you please explian that. I am just wondering If it was something I have said and if so I want to make sure I do my best to talk about the bible in the proper context. Thanx.

I wasn't going to comment on this thread, but after reading these posts, I have to say...

Congratulations chadds15. All the best.

Your sexuality isn't my cup of tea, but that's why I drink coffee. I don't think tea should be banned, or berated, or hated. Here's to your cup always being warm and good. And good luck... You're going to need it. That's why I know being gay is not a choice. What sane person would choose being gay in this society?

Re: Gay marriages

MikeandRhonda.

I am referring to statements that "the Bible says" things that the Bible doesn't say. These statements usually parrot someone else's interpretation in support of a point of view.

I think that you will agree that "The Devil can quote scripture to his purpose". So can Angels.

Used in that manner, isolated quotes of the English interpretations of the Hebrew interpretations of Aramic interpretations of individual ideas about morality ("God's" rules)are often contradictory.

The Bible has been blamed for justifying slavery, genocide, and some of the worst crimes against humanity in recorded history. The Spanish Inquisition used "the Bible" to persecute the Jews, Hitler tried to find a way to prove that Jesus was an Aryan. Other examples abound.

The Bible twice claims that Jesus was descended from David by "begatting" from Joseph to David, but then, according to The Bible, Jesus was born of a virgin and wasn't related by blood to Joseph.

Now, which of those is correct? See what I mean? It is irrelevant to the bottom line of Judeo-Christian belief, but it is there.

On the other hand, organized religion is also responsible for much of the world's morality under guidance of The Bible, Talmud, Torah, Koran, The Book of Mormon and other writings that define a view of what civilized behavior is.

A consequence of the above is that I find arguments that quote or interpret the Bible (the others as well) as weak.. . not belonging to the speaker's reasoning and not supportable by their reasoning.

Re: Gay marriages

well said JB and thanks for the voice of reason.
example? 1st commandment; thou shalt not kill.
origional Hebrew translates more like; thou shalt
not committ murder. ask any Jew.
add to this all the material that has been purposely
removed from the bible over the millenium....

how about this line?
whatsoever you do to the least of my brethren,
that you do unto me.
peace,
M.Y.

Re: Gay marriages

Chads15,

I'm glad you posted. I knew not everybody on this site could possibly be straight. I truly wish you well in the future.
I kid you not, its so ironic, but I found out just this morning that the house next door was sold to a gay couple, and I met them for the first time just now. They seem very nice, and I have absolutely no problem living next to them or having them as good neighbors. They were very friendly to both me and my wife, and commented that they were looking forward to a quiet and peaceful neighborhood to live in. I won't go into the details, but I can tell right away they will be a welcome change from the hetro couple who just moved out.

Re: Gay marriages

JB The answer to how his (Jesus's) line goes back to so and so is because the bloodline was his mothers The imaculet sp? conseption doesnt change the fact of his mothers heritage, sorry for getting off subject here just thought I would answer that to my best ability. As for people misquoting the bible, if intentional like Hitler they have or will answer to that someday. Chads I tell you with 100% honesty I do not hate you, dislike you, look down on you or hope anything bad ever happens to you because your gay. I do not believe being gay is right because of my faith in the bible. And because of many of the statistics that show that gay people suffer the highest rate of depression and suicide amng almost every group out there.Race or otherwise. I am a firm believer in love the sinner and hate the sin and I tell you this....God loves you as much as he loves the pope. Sin is sin and all those who think God hates anybody need to read a bit more into the bible before they make that statement and throw the first stone.

Re: Gay marriages

Hey Ryan,

I just did a quick search on google, and found that the experts have concluded (seriously) that sexual orientation isn't concluded (you won't know for sure) until you're about age 17.
Aren't you still 14?

As might have already been stated, I figure the more comfortable one is with their own sexuality, the more tolerant they are likely to be with others'.
