fat fanny, once the keel is laid and tying in the tops of the frames to the transom and stem, I'll work on what I'm going to do to maintain square frame spacing. I haven't come up with a plan for that yet. I'll probably just use some 1-1/2 angle stock clips and clamps. That seems to be the best deal so far.

I'm within a 32nd at all points of reference now. The keel will get laid next and will will use the stem and frame #4 as references. Unlike a lot of production boats, this one is built off the stem and not the transom so there's very little room for error. It makes for a truer boat but it's definitely more difficult.

Wow Steve, that's accurate! This is such an interesting project, thanks for making it such an education for numb-nuts like me. Cheers,

You know what might help as a jig would be 4" angle with slots cut in it to hold the frames upright and if the angle was fabbed just so to hold them square (turnbuckles) it could help along with some clamps, As long as the jig it'self was square and the slots were parallel to one another. Just a thought

fat fanny, that's a great idea. I would do something like that but there are 1-1/2 x 3/16 T-Bar longitudinals that are installed and will accomplish the same thing I think. The keel goes in next. I have to order the 1-1/2x1/4 T-bar for that. I wasn't sure how much I was going to need so I didn't order it with the rest of the stuff.

Here's the forward frames and bulkheads welded in now. Finished this about an 1/2 hour ago.

The keel is first welded to frame #4 perfectly square. I then started at the forward bulkhead (#7) and moved back to #5. I had my David White transit setup and used it in combination with my two three way laser levels. It was a little overkill but I had the time so I just did it..

By the way, that is the camera making that stem look bowed. I should get a better camera. The stem is dead nuts on.

TII -- Thanks again for the compliments.

If the longitutals are what I'am thinking the forumal for the length is radius x ? / 3.14 + the lenghth of the straight"s + thickness of material = length of each piece? I will double check this formula when I get to work this morning and report back if in fact I'm on the same page with you?

You're on the same page. The radius is longitudinal also because all the pieces are formable. If I've done my job correctly there are no double radius's.

Re: Glen-L 21' Canyon Cruiser - Aluminum

sschef you did understand that the formula is radius of bend x ? of bend / pie +the length of any staights+thickness of material? Sometimes the ? of the bend is often left out or misunderstood, Also it has been layed out as diameter x ? of bend / pie + length of straights + thickness of material (1st formula should be 1/2 the material thickness) I have to machine pcs, that are to be cold formed in the next process and the engineers don't always give the before bending dimension so these formulas are used constantly and like I mentioned last night I would double check this today but did not have the time to get to my box for the refference material but all that being said for some the formula is confusing if your not looking at the pc and or the print to invision it. Man I wish I was your nieghbor you would have to tell me to leave everyday. Waiting on the next step! hope some of this helps.

Bend radius in this project will become critical when making up things like the consoles, fish boxes, etc. When you don't factor it in, you end up saying "Dang, I cut it twice and it's still too short"... LOL...

My plans are to do the layout and then take stuff down to a local shop that has a press brake and have it bent. I can't see buying a decent press brake just for this job. Harbor Freight has a couple but neither of them is up to the job of bending anything bigger than 16ga.

A while back I said I was looking at getting a truck because the Tahoe was too restrictive when it came to hauling the stuff I needed to haul while I'm building this boat.

Well, I got a little carried away at the dealership this afternoon and came home with a F350 SuperDuty XLT, twin turbo diesel 4wd with a factory lift.

This is a lousy pic but it was dark when I got home - I'll make sure to get it into the background on pic's of the boat work.

Wow, if I even attempted something like that my missus would castrate me! :p

Nice work Steve!

The misses has her hot rod Malibu so she's happy. As long as I didn't keep the Tahoe too I knew I'd be fine. Payments are identical, they just don't end until 2017... LOL... Like I'm even gonna live that long.... ROFLOL...

Wow, it must be great to have a missus that cool. I'd get the "you did WHAT?" lecture and cold shoulder treatment for months. I'm with you on the "life's too short theory" but sometimes (most times in my case) it's just not worth the risk! I have a work colleague who has a saying, "we just have to love them, not understand them". I wish the reverse was true! :D Anyway, looks like a great tow car - be perfect to haul the Canyon Cruiser up those big hills of yours.

Nice project. But when I saw the truck I had to comment. Great lookin truck! My friend has a '99 F250 Diesel with 300,000 miles and still runs great, and will beat some sports cars off the line. Sorry for the hyjack, but that is a beast truck! :)

Re: Glen-L 21' Canyon Cruiser - Aluminum

O.K. back to the boat.. I spent the day running all over the county trying to run down a 12' length of 1/4 x 1-1/2" T-Bar for the keel. There's none to be found. I can get 3/16 all day long but no 1/4. What I'm thinking of doing is ripping a piece 1-1/4 wide off a piece 1/4" plate and welding it to a piece of 1/4" flat bar. The stem is 3/8" and the plans call for a 1/4" keel. I probably have enough 3/8 left over to make it out of 3/8 if I wanted. I'll have to study the plans to see what effect it would have. I suspect none but I'd better double check.
