I don't think it's all that big of a deal as long as it's straight. I'll try to make it myself and if I don't like the results I'll order it out of Seattle, Wa.

Re: Glen-L 21' Canyon Cruiser - Aluminum

I made up the keel from two pieces of 1-1/2 x 1/4 flat bar. It came out pretty good but I had to take 1/4" off the frames to make up the difference. That was much easier than trying to rip a 1/4 off the flat bar and better than making it out of two pieces ripped off of a piece a 8' plate that I had. This worked out fine. I chain welded it every foot with a 2" welds and it stayed straight and true.

Here's a straight on shot. It's kind of hard to see it but I guess that means it's straight.

They say the day you lay the keel it's officially a boat so I guess I'm a boat owner again.

scheff do you have a shot of the bow curve from the side? And for what it's worth it looks straight to me nicely done as usual! now is the next step laying the skins?

I'll take another shot of that today and post it tonight.. The next step is to lay in the longitudinals. These are 3/16 x 1-!/2" T-Bar that tie the transom to the stem. Hard to explain but I might get one in today and it will make more sense when you see it. I'll explain the concept once you can actually see what I'm talking about. It wouldn't make much sense now.

Actually, I mispoke a little, the next step is to dial evertyhing in with the transom and weld the keel to it. Then I can start laying in the longitudinals.

Re: Glen-L 21' Canyon Cruiser - Aluminum

I attempted to lay in a longitudinal this weekend and it became readily apparent that a lot of bracing needed to be done. These long members are 3/16 x 1-1/2 t-bar that lay accross the top of the frames and tie in at the transom and the stem. They don't get welded to the frames so the frames are semi floating.

When I tried to make the bend into the stem, it tweaked from the pressure so I had to stop and figure a way to brace everything. So far I have it braced solid up to frame #5 and over the next couple of evenings I'll finish tying in 6 and 7.

What makes this difficult is that I'm not using a round bar longitudinal at the chine points because this is not a good practice when it comes to strength. It makes it easier but at a sacrafice and it's not one I'm willing to take.

Here's a couple of pics of the re-enforcing that I've done. It's solid now. I tried laying in the t-bar by starting at the transom and it just doesn't work. Tomorrow I'll roll the boat, (yes, it's a boat now, it has a keel), out to the drive way and then start by cutting the compound miter angle at the stem and then welding the t-bar on and working back. A 25' lever should be much eaiser to lay in than a 4' lever which is what you end up with if you start at the transom.

It's a little hard to discren the original form from the new re-enforcing but if you look close you'll see how it works. This also doubles as a squaring rig.

The boat is looking great, nice work. If you modify it enough from the specs can you patent the hull design? :D

Always glad to see updates, this project is a neat one to watch progress.

Sweet. You're all setup to knock out multiples. Maybe you can start on mine next as you seem to have the process down for mass production and ease of duplicating :)

Nice work as always.

Re: Glen-L 21' Canyon Cruiser - Aluminum

Thanks again to all for the compliments.

The first two longitudinals are on and it is a bear of job. I cut some nice compuound miters (50/31.3) on the t-bar and welded them to the stem. Then I gradually started wraping them around the frames. The two sides have to be done equally or the frames will tweak no matter how much bracing you have. It took me two days to sinch them down and adjust so my fair was smooth and correct.

It became very apparent to me as to why the real boat builders use forms and build these things upright. It's a healthy investment and not practical for a one off builder like me but it makes far mor sense than doing it this way. If I was going to build another, I'd build the upright forms.

I have read your resto's and you have given me many helpful tips, and your 91 Monark legend looks awesome! I am painting a 16ft Starcraft, I made similar boat stands as yours for the Monark, just wondering How did you paint the bottom where the stands were??? Thanks a lot.

One more question, what product did you use for aluminum filler on your hull exterior? I want to smooth over some rivets on the bottom of my boat so there is no turbulence near my fish finder transducer. Thanks.

JSW - Once you get it off the stands you can paint those small areas. It's no biggie, just scuff the edges a little and then paint the three spots. As for filler, I just use 3M marine grade filler for metals (green writing on can). You can get it at West Marine. There's a lot of talk about fillers falling out and not bonding to Aluminum.. Most of that comes from people who haven't done it or didn't take the time to read the prep requirments.

Re: Glen-L 21' Canyon Cruiser - Aluminum

Been raining just about every decent day off I've had since my last post. When it rains I'm stuck in the garage and I can't put any of the longitudinals on in that confined space. I'm just waiting for better weather but in the mean time I'm going over to Sacramento tomorrow and order a new 18' Jetcraft with a 115 Yami. That's the plan anyway I may actually drop down to a 16' with a 60hp Merc. It all depends on what I feel like tomorrow.

I can't believe I was stupid enough to think I could live without a fishing boat for 3 years. Dohhhhh

Am I going to finish this boat? Are you serious? I mean really? really?

Darn right I am..

LOL, nah, that one had my goat too.

I drove over to Dixon to Gone Fishin Marine and ordered the 2011 Jetcraft Falcon. It's being made up in British Columbia now and I'll take delivery in late April.

I tore down the Canyon Cruiser and will sell it off as scrap.

This is close to what it looks like. Mine will have the Merc 4 stroke and no paint. I'm going to have it painted to match my truck.

Re: Glen-L 21' Canyon Cruiser - Aluminum

It seems to be the hot ticket right now. Priced right and all you need if you like to fish. They come in 16 and 18 ft models. I got the 16' with the 60 Merc 4 stroke for 20,000.00 out the door. That doesn't include registration for the boat and trailer. I put down 2000.00 and financed 18,000.00 for 84 months. It ends up being about 1/2 the amount that I was having to put away each month for the Canyon Cruiser so it frees up some cash flow and I can start enjoying life a little more.

What's up Schef? Nice truck......and what sounds like to be a pretty nice matching boat behind it soon. It takes a man to decide to give up on a project like the Cruiser. Looks like it was coming along well, but if you like to fish like I do, it must have been killin' you. I'm too fool to give up on mine yet. Lookin' forward to seeing what you do with the Jetcraft when you get it. I'm sure it will need to be accessorized Schef style.
