So I picked up a 1995 a few weeks ago with a 5/7L, Alpha 1. Have a noise, think it is gimble bearing. Reading all the posts how a guy should pull the outdrive yearly so I started to tackle it this afternoon. Got 5 nuts off, 6th near off. It is broke loose but only will move back about ? inch. I rocked it like the utube video, etc. Any advice? I assume the shaft is rusted in the bearing etc. Looks like it has not been of in ?never??.

If you don't have one of the nuts all the way off, you aren't going to get the drive off.

You're in forward gear, yes? If so, then yeah, it sounds like th4 bearing is stuck to the shaft. Ya just gunna have to work it...

I'm curious why in the title it says you have all the nuts off, but in the thread you have 5 of 6 off.

Which is it???????

yea, I watched the video. (and 3 others) they all just fall out like a mother's 8th baby. Mine, not some much. Stuck at 1/2". I assume the shaft is rusty, etc. I do ahve the gear shift all the way forward. Anythign else I am missing that would hold it at 1/2"?

Could it be something in the shift cable caught? I do have the shifter full throttle forward. Can someone explain what doing this does? Would it help if I back it off toward neutral and full forward again while I shake the outdrive?

Watch the installation video and it explains why you MUST be in forward... And that goes for removal as well...

I just went out and looked today at it, the shifter is not holding it up. Also, I note I cant push it back in. (I assume the nuts would draw it back up). Thus, I sense it is a result of not being off in its 15 years life and the shaft is coroded horrible in the bearing. That sould correct? Any tips on using more force/ manpower, etc? My 21 yr old son and 2-3 pals are around a lot but I am not sure how we can get a good hold on it at the top area.

Ayuh,.... Reattach the trim rams,...Wedge a 2x4 against the top of the drive, 'tween it, 'n the transom, 'n use the hyd.s to push the drive off....

Or,.... Put a 2x4 up, 'n under the drive, pick it up, 'n SLAM it down against the 2x...

Amazing what a tad bit of hydraulic enthusiasm will do. I had it off in 8 minutes. Took longer to get a 2x4 cut to right length. OK, now onto the bearing. Felt like it had sand in it. Guess it is good I decided it was something not to be ignored.
