Re: Hurricanes names are racist?

People that travel I-45 in the central Texas area have heard of Buffalo I'm sure. There is a rodeo stock producer there whos name is Bob Champion. He named his son "National" and his daughter "Ima". True story, and kinda related to this one.

By the way, I thought we ended all this crap with 40 acres and a mule? My family fought on both sides of the war, or as we like to call it "The Northern Agression". My family owned slaves, many of my ancestors were also indentured servants. I say build em a boat and let em go back.

An old timer told me this many many years ago-If we had known it was gonna be this much trouble we would have picked our own **** cotton.

I think it's racist to cry racism, or to look for it where it isn't, all the time.

The question has to be asked. Where is all the racism coming from in America today? What ethnic group is it coming from?
While there is ignorant baitbuckets in all colors. The trend is an obvious one.

Skinnywater makes good point. The use of the term "lily white " in a derogatory fashion kinda strikes a nerve with this south Texas honkie.

Re: Hurricanes names are racist?

First of all, Rep Lee is a US congresswoman, not a Texas State senator, and would have no political reason to go to New Mexico.

Second of all, why in the world is it so all-fired threatening to you folks that a person expresses an opinion? Look at your globe, folks, this is America!

She said ethnic names are not represented. Are they, or aren't they? OK

Now, is it important that the weather service that names the storms take this into consideration? I have no idea, but you all sure think it is not, apparently. That is hardly surprising, since being overlooked and ignored is very rarely important to those that are not being overlooked and ignored.

I really don't care what they name the storms after. But to imply that she is somehow a "disgrace" to Texas for expressing an opinion is simply ludicrous.

She was elected. She represents a constituency that while may not represent your views exactly, probably does represent the people that elected her. Otherwise, they would not have elected her.

It is called democracy, folks. Why in the world do you seem to hate it so?

Opps, My bad.....I new that
You have no idea if this is important or not? This is complete waste of time for our reps to be even acknowloging. What is she doing? Sitting around all day long just trying to find racism and injustices? It's a fricken hurricane. I can see it now, all of a sudden there is a bunch of minorities sitting around and complaining they haven't had a hurricane named after them and crying racism. This has nothing to do with names, it has everything to do with wasting time and I am sure will end up with more useless legislation. Where does it end? Eskimo's, Indians, Liberals.....Oh don't forget PETA....I am sure these crazies want fair representation for spotted owls, too.

Right on Tex! Exactly, the issue is people like her who try to turn everything into a race issue. SHe and people like her are hateful raceists.

And Plywoody, give me a break and stop being so sanctemoenous - your are criticizing the criticism - same darn thing. It is an exercise in freedom and democracy to criticize moron politicians when they do stupid moronic things. Sounds like you're the one who has the problem with freedom of speech (just like all good liberals really do - free speech is really only ok when it fits their agenda). I must admit, youi know most of the liberal argument tricks well. I've seen you display them a few times now and you are well schooled in them. More than I would expect from a "average Joe"...

I say it is racist to name those destructful, damaging, murderous storms ONLY after white people - how's that?!

Re: Hurricanes names are racist?

hell, if they had kept the good names they were using, it would be aight ....

Hurricane Andrew Jackson

Hurricane Abraham Lincoln

etc

however, by the time someone says, Hurricane Reverend Martin Luther Lamumbawumba Jamokle K'mesha Placentia (yeah, PLACENTIA, another overheard doc term, placenta, that got used fo de name) Macolm X King is coming, the damnn thing will have already blown its bags and bags of hot destuctive pointlesss air all over the land, scattering lives, causing destruction and chaos

sorta like Reverend Jackson, except it hasnt fathered any half "lily white" babies

well ... cept for those wild hurricane parties, I may be in error on that one!

Re: Hurricanes names are racist?

It is fair game to criticize the idea she has. I have no problem with that.

Frankly, in the original Lee article as I read it, she just suggested that there were no ethnic names, and the weather service should look at it next time.

So is she wrong? Are there ethnic names? It does not appear so. Should there be? I have no idea.

But not once in any of the criticism leveled against her, has anything been said that addressed the issue, only that it was a "waste of time". Again it is not surprising since a group not being ignored is not likely to be bothered by some other group that is ignored.
It apparently is not a waste of time to her

But when it becomes personal, and you call her a "disgrace" as you call it, that is a different story.

Yet there was not one reason why either her idea was wrong, but only an emotional charge that she is a disgrace, with nothing whatever to back it up.

It is indeed disgraceful.

And I am not being sactimonious. I believe you are falling into a common trap of the right, which is being intellectually lazy, and calling people names as opposed to attempting to refute their ideas.

Well, Plywoody, I'll agree with you on one thing; Name calling is easier than thinking. More fun, too. Seriously, we have a few folks on here who are so desperate for attention that they'll get it anyway they can. Usually everyone just ignores them and they eventually go away. It can be aggravating though if you take them seriously. I usually don't agree with your views, but I'll say one thing for you: you make your points and support them well.

You're obviously confusing authors as I have not even mentoned her once. The only comment I made on the issue is a suggestion to name all future hurricanes after minoarities (to make up for years of ebing over looked).

In addition, to call people on the right intellectually lazy is an out and out insult that you can't back up. The same could be more easily said for your side.

Finally, I see you antipathy toward free speech is just as evident in your last post as it was in your first.

Re: Hurricanes names are racist?

Heck ,In the seventies the crybaby female liberals thought it was one sided and improper to just name Hurricanes after womens names. Now all of a sudden everybody wants to have a piece of what was once considered having your name associated with a bad thing. Most of these little crybabies really don't know what they want. They just want something.I say we drop all Anglo male first names from storms and let em have it.Or ,do they all just want what they don't have, good or bad?

thats right, yanno, it was listening to the liberals that got us in trouble to begin with ... just ask Archie Bunker about that

on the bright side, the male hurricanes, er, himacanes usually cant make it past the Virgin Islands!

Hurricane Reverend Jackson would sure be tied up a while there ... or, he would have them tied .. eh, whatever ....

Re: Hurricanes names are racist?

Reguardless of what, who, or anything gets named after so and so, I would still be upset with my elected official, if they could find nothing better to do for my state than to sit and cry about some names for hurricanes.

Now come on people. You mean to tell me that you want your tax dollars going for something like that?

Hey Jack Shellac, are you reffering to Lady Fish??

As I recall, she was the originator of this thread, and I think a good one, as it is very disgusting that our leaders in Congress waste their (very expensive to us) time on such stupid examples of negative racism. This old codger for one, would rather have my name tagged on something constructive, rather than something destructive. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Here's all you need to know about S.J.Lee-a few years ago when NASA sent a probe to Mars-voyager I believe-Lee was visiting mission control in Houston. She asked if they had sent the probe to visit the site where the astronauts had planted the flag- - - - ON FRIGGIN' MARS!!!!.

Maybe she thinks the moon is Mars. And just maybe ,she'd like to have something done about those non-inclusive planet names.I know I would sleep better and the world would be a better place. :D

Lakeman: No, I wasn't referring to Ladyfish. She makes some good observations and this was one of them. Glad to have her in the forum.

Come to think of it, the names of the planets are racist too. We should rename a least one of them after minorities.

So let's have a renaming contest. Which planet and what should the new name be???

Re: Hurricanes names are racist?

We could create a space mission for minorities, send them off in the Good Ship Charmin, to check Uranus for Klingons ...

Alternatively, could send an en masse manned mission to The Sun ..

Not to worry, the leader, the esteemed Revvvvvruuuuund Jacksonnnn would be assured to not worry, they will attempt the landing at night  ...

Just a thought, Equal Opportunity yanno!

:D :D

edit ... yes, it is a silly idea, but no more so than to allege that yet another atrocity has been perpetrated upon our African American citizens by the tacit exclusion of representative names for these lethal, destructive anomalies of nature ... besides, one of my best friends in school was a kid who happened to be black, who was named Mike ... there has never been a Tropical Storm or Hurricane Mike or Michael? I would think there has been!
